This is a great book about how distractions can lead you to many new places and off the path you were wanting.
Meow is a hide-and-seek book about a little cat playing a game with his friend Ash. It has some detailed and humorous illustrations as the two miss each other over and over.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
'Meow' with story and art by Tizzy Cottingham is a picture book about a cat looking for another cat.
Socks is a cat that lives in a big city. Every day he plays hide and seek with his cat friend Ash. The problem is that Socks is easily distracted, so the reader has to help find Ash.
The art and design of this book is well done. The words scroll around like a cat does and readers will have fun finding Ash on the pages. The art is really nice and will make this a repeatable favorite at story time.
Socks is an orange Tabby cat who lives in the heart of the city. Every day he thinks about what activities await throughout the day. He enjoys his days relaxing in the sun, sleeping in the shade, playing with his friends in the big park and eating fish by the sea. Today, Socks wants to find his best friend, Ash, in searching all across the city, in parks, cafés, the seaside and more, Ash is nowhere to be found. The fun thing is for the reader or listener to find Ash in each picture. The illustrations are wonderful and that is the best part of the story, at least as far as my grandson was concerned. Combined with the repetition in the text makes it a perfect book for young children. My grandson enjoyed the book and the second time we read it, he listened more to the prose as he had already located Ash. The first time through we spent most of our time looking at and talking about the wonderfully colourful and detailed illustrations. This is a cute story that will engage young children and would be great to use with small groups in Kindergarten or Pre-School.
Meowvellous!!!!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for my review.
Socks is an orange Tabby cat who lives in the heart of a European city. Every day starts slowly, with a big long stretch & a thought over the activities that await them throughout the day. Today, Socks wants to find their friend, Ash, but in all their searches across the city—in parks, cafes, the seaside & within the markets—Ash is nowhere to be found.
This particular book is strongly marketed toward a very, very, young audience. The repetition of inquiry—guiding the reader to see if they can find Ash within the illustrations—would be tedious & might take away from the experience for older audiences. The story follows Socks as they wander different environments & the author asks the reader for their full attention as Socks tries to locate the black cat, Ash, within a colourful backdrop.
I appreciated the soft strokes of colour that shaped the world of this story. For those readers who cannot follow along, reading the words themselves, it is easy to anticipate participation that surpasses the written word; allowing them their part in the chase.
Overall, this was a quaint story that I’m sure many young readers will appreciate for its straightforwardness & easy plot. The uniting of Socks & Ash at the end of the book as they walk into the setting sun poses nice imagery that will encourage readers to flip through the pages in an attempt to spot Ash once again, before the story’s end.
Thank you to NetGalley, Matador, & Tizzy Cottingham for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Princess Fuzzypants here: This is a delightful story about a cat named Socks who wants to find his friend, Ash. He goes all sorts of places in the big city but he cannot find Ash. Ash is playing hide and seek and it is not until the very end of the story that the two are reunited. The story is sweet but the artwork is amazing.
The cats are so life-like and beautiful. It impressed me as I am sure it will impress the young kitty lovers out there. Five purrs and two paws up.
Spend a day seeing life through the eyes of Socks, a cat on the prowl for his best pal. The author's artwork is gorgeous, and I love how the text appears in unusual places throughout the book. Kids will love looking for Socks' missing friend, while cat lovers of all ages will enjoy this visual treat.
Cute quick story which is great for visual learning and making children find things within a page of a picture book.
I particularly enjoyed the art style in this story of a feral cat looking for his playmate while exploring around a town. Lush illustrations make spotting the feline in question challenging enough to be engaging but easy enough for young readers. The repetition of lines creates some nice build-up and tension as the story goes on. I do wish the book had ended on the second-to-last page, or on a different final page simply depicting the cats in the landscape-- the final illustration of them walking off together towards the moon seemed a little cheesy considering the rest of the illustrations feel so naturalistic.
What a charming book!. I really enjoyed hunting for the characters on each page and finding out what Socks did throughout the day. With gorgeous pictures, this would be a fantastic story to share during story time.
What a perfect bedtime story!
The illustrations are exquisite; the author captures cat behaviors and attitudes.
Finding Ash becomes a fun activity, excellent training for awareness and curiosity.
Bravo!
This book is very cute! I read it with my daughters and they enjoyed looking for Ash. Simple story and a few sentences per page. Perfect interactive book for preschool aged children.
Thank you NetGalley.
Thanks to Netgalley and Matador for the ARC of this!
My cat loving kiddos really liked looking for Ash in the background of the illustrations. I felt it was a little simple for their ages (6 and 9) but would be perfect for a preschool picture book! The kitties were lovely.
Tour the city with Socks as they look for their friend, Ash.
This is such a fun and colorful book. While the words are repetitive, you get many different cityscapes and play seek &find for Ash on most pages. Additionally, you can discuss the actions, practice counting, talk about the colors of the cats, and more.
Would recommend if your child is fond of cats or you’re learning about life in the city.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the author, publishers and netgalley for my review copy.
This is a story aimed at a very young age group and is full of big illustrations and prose that is interactive too. I think if you're a cat lover you'll especially enjoy a day in the life of this ginger cat called Socks.
I as an adult had fun looking for Ash on every well drawn page. I was also entertained to see the words move around the pages as a cat would.
It is a wonderful book obviously written by a cat lover and will be enjoyed by little cat lovers for sure
Thank you to Netgalley and the author and publisher for a chance to read and review this cute children's book! Very fun to read and look for Ash!
4.5 "Meowgnificant" stars !!

Socks is an orange marmalade kitty who enjoys his days relaxing in the sun, sleeping in the shade, playing with his friends in the big park and eating fishies by the sea. All day he is looking for Ash his best buddy. The three to five year old in you has to find Ash in each of the pictures.
The prose is fun and entertaining but the illustrations are an absolute dream. They are a purrrrrfect and would look lovely framed in a kitchen or a child's bedroom. I went through the picture book three or four times absolutely delighted. Yes absolutely delighted !
I wish my oldest niece would get pregnant so that I could buy this book for her little one ! Lol!
Meow is a charming book for the youngest of readers and perfect for a bedtime story.
It is a simple tale of ginger cat Socks looking for his black cat friend Ash in various places.
The illustrations are the star of the show, they look like oil paintings. One particular page had an image of a pigeon which was amazingly lifelike.
Ash asks lots of questions which will provide the opportunity to interact with the young reader.
The final image of the two friends reunited was genuinely heart warming.
Many thanks to the publisher for providing me with a digital ARC to provide an honest review.
