Thank you to NetGalley for this copy. This is a really good book, kept me entertained throughout and I would thoroughly recommend to all.
I really loved this book, it was both engaging and heartbreaking without being too soppy or dark. I loved the character of Wren and her reasons for travelling to America. Her summer staying with her Dad and his family was lovely to read about and made me feel like I was there and part of it.
I thought it was really well written and I really enjoyed reading it.
I have nothing else to say, other than I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!! Heartbreaking, heartwarming, funny, and romantic. Perfect.
I devoured this in one sitting. It completely consumed me. This is a heartbreaking yet beautiful story about love, loss, grief, friendship and Families. There is no major plot twist... just a couple of surprises to keep us on our toes.
Paige Toon definitely has a way of intertwining a beautiful love story with devastating moments but actually that's reality in so many ways and that's what I love.
The characters are easy to love and I enjoyed sharing their journeys. Anders was my fave. You'll have to read to find out why. He may come across as harsh and selfish sometimes but you'll soon find out how big his heart and devotion is.
I will be urging anyone and everyone to read this book come release day!!
Romance isn't my usual genre, but every once in a while I'll reach for a romcom or a teary romance and remind myself it isn't all horror and history. So I reached for Only Love Can Hurt Like This and can't wait to get back to some horror and action.
This is a typical will they wont they sorta story, but to be honest I really wish they hadn't or that they had a lot quicker. I really didn't enjoy the characters or their dynamics. I found them irritating and immature.
Overall it was a struggle, but if you're one of those who reads the end first then just read the epilogue and it'll tell you everything.
If you have to grab this book grab a bottle of wine too.
A really good read. I loved this story After Wren splits from her fiance she decides to spend some time with her dad, stepmom and half sister in America but they don't have the best of relationships so she is not at all sure they can finally start to get close. After a night out with her sister they meets two brothers from the local farm and there is an instant attraction to Anders and Wren, but things with him are complicated. There are some secrets that eventually come to light which causes more heartache for her. Some great characters and it's a fantastic story love, loss and friendships but most of all love at the heart of the story and can two people eventually find the happiness they really deserve. A 5 ⭐read
Every now and then I read a book that gets all my emotions going and affects me. Only Love Can Hurt like this was that book for me. I totally engaged with the characters and felt so many emotions. Love, friendship, heartache, family dynamics. I will be recommending this book to everyone
In Toon’s latest novel, we meet Wren. She’s a little stuck, her relationship has ended, she’s not enjoying her work and she lives in a small town where she keeps bumping into her ex.
She decides to visit her Dad in America for a couple of weeks to get away from it all. There are some unresolved issues within her family and Wren soon discovers she needs some time to reflect and build on relationships. She also becomes acquainted with two brothers living down the road on their family farm…….
This is a simple romance story, no big plot twists, no puzzles to solve, just a few bumps along the road. I loved seeing her relationships develop with her family, I had tears in my eyes at times when she discussed feeling like an outsider. Toon continues to write beautifully, some of her descriptions 👌🏼I just loved following Wrens story, she was easy to like and I found myself rooting for her early on. There were lots of great characters in this one!
I’m a sucker for romance novels and I’m a fan of Toon’s books so I knew this was a winner for me. I’d highly recommend as a summer read, or for any romance fans out there.
I have been looking forward to a new book from Toon for so long and I was so excited to get stuck into this. If I am being brutally honest, this will not be my favourite book of hers, but I still loved it. The first half is good although slow and I could not help but think it needed something else to happen. Then in the second half I got my wish and it was phenomenal.
The latter half of the book is full of emotion, it is heartbreaking and incredibly emotional to read. I felt for all of the characters as they find themselves in an impossible situation. As always, Toon handles the subjects with aplomb, just enough drama to make for a good read but always handled sensitively. I absolutely loved the latter half.
The characters in this are equally gorgeous and I adored getting to know them, Toon has a real skill of creating characters her readers care about. I particularly enjoyed the aspect of Wren being an architect and the glorious descriptions that came with that.
'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' is a very welcome return for one of my favourite authors.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK for an advance copy.
Only love can hurt like this by Paige Toon
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“ ‘It hurt to love you.’ I reach over and smooth those creases away. ‘Not today,’ I murmur. ‘Don’t let it hurt you today”…
Why has it taken so long for me to discover Paige Toon!
And now I have yet another auto buy author to add to my list and More books to my ever growing tbr shelf.
I was really shocked by how similar this is to a coho book with that deep level of connection between her characters and with a fantastic easy to read writing style.
This is a mesmerising tale of pure romance of the sweetest kind
The character are torn between doing the right thing for those around them and the right thing for themselves and it amounts to a bubbling mixing pot of heartbreaking raw emotions.
One particular quote that I had to share is “I didn’t know it was possible to love so fully and hurt so deeply at exactly the same time.” Just pure poetry
I became completely consumed by their story.
Wrens issues with family are so relatable.
I think everyone has had that moment of not feeling good enough or that feeling of not belonging but as wren discovered if you talk to those around you about how you feel they normally feel the same and would only too much cherish that hug
There’s no puzzle or huge plot twist it’s just a story of love with a couple of little twists to keep us in our toes although be warned it is a very slow burner
I can’t wait to read more from this author but in the mean time I’ll try and do like wren and Love hard and live for the day.
Thank you to netgalley, penguin and the author for opportunity to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 easy to read stars.
Every now and then I like a break from the crime and suspense and serial killer books so seek out something lighter. Usually a YA book or cheesy romance. This is cheesy romance.
Yes you know how it’s going to end, yes it has an epilogue with every happy ending you could wish for but in between is a well written story, very easy to read.
A few gripes though - surely someone would have told Wren the truth about Laurie? also, I didn’t enjoy the elements when Kelly came into the plot - and it was a tad far fetched what they bought for Anders…..
But otherwise, a book to read if you want a feel good happy ending
Enjoyable story about Wren, who goes on holiday to the USA to stay with her father, after the break up of her engagement. She meets Anders who has suffered some personal tragedy of his own and there is a definite spark between them, but things are complicated. Easy to read with likeable characters and a romantic storyline.
Paige Toon does it again, she can do no wrong in my eyes, her books are always like a warm hug to me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
This is the epitome of the perfect summer romance novel - it is predictable in the most perfect way. Paige Toon can do no wrong with this genre. A wonderful "friends to lovers" story based in small town America. You can imagine what happens in the story, but it will be so much better when you actually read it. Amazing!
This was utterly scrumptious. The perfect rainy day romance but with hidden depths that really made it more substantial. Wren and Anders are a dream, and the side characters are absolutely wonderful too. It had just the perfect amount of slow burn and felt super genuine. I loved this!
Oh Paige Toon what have you done to me, another fantastic gripping story,
Heartbroken Wren recently split up from her Fiance heads to her Dad's in the USA to lick her wounds, although they are not close he now has another family and Wren feels totally out of place.
Whilst trying to bond with her sister Bailey, Wren also has a bond with hunky neighbour Anders who is afraid to get close dealing with his past.
What a beautiful beautiful read this is, I was bed bound with covid so I was lucky to plough though these pages as I really didn't want to put this book down.
An engaging story about heartbreak, starting over, and making the most of the one life we all have.
Such a beautiful read, Bravo Paige Toon you never disappoint ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Paige seems to deliver another masterclass in relationships and makes you realise that things we think are straight forward aren't and how difficult it can be to oen up about our true feelings.
Wren has escaped to America away from her ex fiance and to her father whohas divorced and remarried and who has now started a new way of life on a fruit farm.
The farm next door has it's own problems and Wren fall for 'the boy nextdoor'. Can the families come together and be honest with each other. more importantly can Wren accept Anders past when he himself can't let go?
Paige Toon at her best.Wren had boyfriend problems so goes to America to stay with her father who remarried and lives out there. Lots of issues and misunderstandings were sorted out over a hot summer . Some secrets you did not see. Won’t spoil it . Brilliant read. Not always a fan of stories set in the States but it worked . Also an intense love element
As a massive @paigetoonauthor fan I have been so excited for the release of this book. So when I was accepted to read the early copy via @netgalley I was thrilled. Paige is known for her impossible love stories and I could not define this story any other way. I loved the characters, loved the setting and as usual with Paige's books I really felt like I was there with her fantastic descriptions. Sometimes romance books can be predictable but I honestly could never have guessed the twist that was keeping the two love interests apart in this case and let me tell you, it was heartbreaking. With the way this was written I really felt like I was feeling all of Wren's emotions and could really sympathise with her. I desperately wanted her to feel loved and like she found somewhere she could fit in life because based on her past that hasn't always been the case. It was nice to see her building on her relationship with her dad's side of the family and finding a best friend in the form of her sister after years of miscommunication. I don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone so I won't go into too much detail about what happens but the twist just showed what a genuinely decent man Anders is which makes him all the more loveable. His heartbreaking situation made him put his life on hold always choosing to put everyone else around him first. It was obvious he cared deeply for his family and loved ones always looking out for them even when he was going through a lot himself. I've also got to mention Jonas, Anders brother. He played a big part in the story and I really enjoyed him as a character and would love to hear more from him in the future. I found myself being just as interested in his life as I was with the main love interests. As always with Paige's books some characters from previous books get a slight mention which always makes me smile so hoping to hear from the characters in only love can hurt like this in future books. I can't wait for the release of this book so I can re-read it and have a physical copy for my shelf!
Oh I get so excited when a new Paige Toon book comes out and I was so excited to read this one. However it just lacked something for me. I know I will be in the minority with this but for me something just didn't gel. I didn't love it as much as I usually love a Paige Toon book and was left a little bit disappointed.
