I’ll preface this by saying, while this one wasn’t quite my new favourite, I can absolutely see why others love it!
There are some great things about this book. It’s a witchy/supernatural rom-com with a great fake dating plot line (my favourite). It’s filled with magic, spice and some really loveable characters that you really do find yourself rooting for.
I can absolutely see why others are really enjoying it, and it hasn’t deterred me from wanting to read other things from this author. I definitely think this is for anyone who is a fan of Hex Appeal or The Hex Ex, as it gives off similar vibes to me.
(Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
this book unfortunately wasn't for me. I read 100 pages and was not intrigued so I have DNF'd it. If you are a fan of a cute, witchy romance, then this one may work, but it isn't doing it for me.
4.5 Star.
I'm really behind on getting to this arc that I have since bought, but thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for originally sending me a copy of this book.
I had such a good time with this, was giving me The Ex Hex vibes and I love that. Spicy, cosy, witchy read set in a small town that I'm definitely interested in getting back to. I enjoyed Mariel and Oz's relationship and how they built it up from the silliness that brough Oz into Mariel's life. I loved seeing Mariel's character arc especially with her mother, I thought this was done really well.
Had a great time with this and looking forward to continuing on with Glimmer Falls.
I read this back to back with another of Sarah’s books and really enjoyed myself. One of my friend’s had recommended them to me and they lived up to the hype.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the review copies
I loved this book so much more than I thought I would. Such a sweet and wholesome romance but also has complexity added to the world building that is not often found in rom coms.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series (I think it’s going to be even better!!)
This book was the cutest! I enjoyed the character arcs that Oz and Mariel went through. All the side characters were entertaining and not 2 dimensional. It definitely was “insta-love” vibes but sometimes I enjoy that.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this! It was incredibly funny and had me laughing throughout. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Oz and Mariel develop during the story. They went from barely wanting to be around each other to being inseparable. I especially loved seeing Oz stand up for Mariel and giving her the confidence to be able to do it without him. I also really liked the side characters in this. Mariel has some really good people around her and then she has some down right awful people like her mum who I absolutely hated.
I quite liked the plot of this book too and will definitely be picking the next one!
Not a huge fan - I love a witchy romance but this felt like I was being forced to hate a witchy romance. The main characters were really hard to get along with. Not a fan, but I’ll be sure to recommend to people who do want a witchy sitch.
Absolutely addictive and brilliantly entertaining, Sarah Hawley’s novel is the perfect supernatural romance. Filled with wonderfully eccentric characters and, of course, a smoking hot demon, I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes next
I love a romance, I love a comedy and I also love books about witches and demons. This is a cheeky combination of all three.
Mariel Spark is under constant attack. Usually from her mother for being useless at hexes. She’s having a bad day when she inadvertently summons a demon. He’s a scary, powerful demon called Ozroth who takes souls. He’s also rather hot in every sense. He’s in a bit of a slump and he really needs to win Mariel’s soul to make good at home. It’s complicated though because he’s bound to her side until she submits and she really won’t.
Before we know it she accidentally outs him as her boyfriend and now they have to keep it up whilst fighting a very real attraction.
So far so romantic and ditsy but this book looks at how opposites attract and has insights into the nature of love and friendship. It’s a cute book with a little mystery arc added to round it out. I think there’s a sequel and I’m in for that.
A demon bargaining for souls and a witch who didn't want to bargain? Now that wasn't going to cause a problem was it. Brilliant characters and a storyline that pulls you along so fast that time disappears .
Super cringy, I honestly disliked this book so much. It had all the ingredients to be great, but for me, it just fell very flat.
DNF @ 20%
This is just what my spicy little heart needed! The fantasy romcom genre is one which I absolutely love and this book did not hold back in any area.
If you're a fan of cute fantasy romance, then I would highly recommend this one! I love a paranormal romance, and A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating A Demon is so wholesome.
Enemies to lovers, nature, magic, and a whole lot of talking about how big certain parts of Ozroth's (The Demon) anatomy is makes for an entertaining, cosy read. I wouldn't have minded more Demon dick tbh but I guess that's personal preference.
The characterisation in this story is glorious and by far my favourite aspect. Mariel is kind and loving with a loyal group of friends, her love of nature and her affinity to anything that lives is wonderful, apart from her mother who she avoids at all costs for very good reason.
Ozroth, the ruthless Demon who's come to steal Mariel's soul, is big and bad, or at least he's meant to be. He's grumpy but also grappling with some more human feelings, especially towards Mariel.
Overall I loved this book! It's got a wonderful charm to it and a cosiness that I absolutely love and think other people would too.
While I like the cosy vibes of this book, I gave up on trying to force myself to read the whole thing before it archived. There is baking, and nice times with friends, and a sexy, caring demon as the male love interest (who also gets his own point of view chapters) which were all really nice. But the thing that I hated and made me give up was the way the woman's mother acts. Her twenty-something-year-old daughter has a boyfriend and the mum reacts by throwing a party for relatives on the daughter's own front lawn, without even asking permission to go there? I know there are horrid parents in the world but for me this (and lots of other stuff that the mother does and says) firmly crossed the line from cringey into just not believable. It felt like it undermined the other good stuff in the book because I ended up skipping forward over pages where the mum was 'on screen' and the not-believable bits kept pulling me out of the story.
Hilarious, sweet, and spicy fun! I really enjoyed this contemporary witchy romance, from the female friendships to the humour to the off-the-charts chemistry. A hugely enjoyable addition to the genre!
I picked this book up on a whim, and my first thought when I read it was that it had no right to be this good! A quirky magic romance, with a heroine who is so relatable despite the magic surrounding her. The plot was enthralling, their town in danger of dark stray magic. The hero, a dark gem, the friends, so funny, and the relationship between the heroine and her parents remarkably complicated!
This was a fantastically funny and innovative take on a classic trope, and Hawley did a fantastic job at laying the seeds for her next novel in the series!
Just the book o was looking for, witchy, funny and a pleasure to read. Thank you netgalley for my arc.
I really liked this book. It was funny and interesting and the characters were well-developed. I liked the growth both had throughout the book. I'm looking forward to the next one. I also have so many world questions for this book and the worlds the characters live in that I hope are explored more in future books.
This was such a fun, witchy read! I think I'll definitely make an effort to pick it back up again closer to Halloween as I feel it would fit an autumn aesthetic so well.
