I was really hoping this book was going to be better than my expectations but it left me feeling very disappointed. It wasn’t really worth the hype for me

A Paiute Indian Chief is murdered while performing the controversial Ghost Dance his reservation in Nevada and investigative reporter, Aimee Brent, is chosen by the acting Paiute counsel to investigate and report on what occurred. Action-packed, fast-paced with very likeable characters. Hope there are more Aimee Brent stores to come! I received an ARC from Net Galley and the opinions expressed are my own.

There are definitely things to like about this story: it's got suspense, it's got mystery, and the narrative is well thought out, if a little too fast-paced for my liking. The author has clearly done a lot of research before writing and it shows. The writing itself is clear and easy to read, and it's an easy story to read through in a short amount of time, which I liked.

Where it really falls down is the characters. It's hard to get a good grasp on who they actually are or what their motivations are, and it often feels like they're defined entirely by the plot, rather than pushing it forward. Aimee as a main character has potential but she just feels too thinly drawn; it's one thing for side characters to feel like plot devices, but there are points in the story when she does or says things that just feel very forced. I've not read this author before and as such haven't read the two previous Aimee Brent novels, so its possible that if I had, she might feel like she has a bit more depth to me, but from reading just this alone, I couldn't tell you who Aimee is as a character.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book and about the modern day culture of the Paiute Indian tribe. Hayden did her study of the Indians well. The story is about an elderly tribe member who hates the way his people are wanting the modern ways and influence and forsaking the ways of the tribe of the past generations. The plot is very intriguing, filled with unexpected twist and turns...... Reporter Aimee Brent is sent by her newspaper to investigate a murder on Paiute lands. At first she is denied entrance as the tribal leaders have closed the land and no one can come in nor leave the grounds. And the mystery and suspense begins. She is then allowed to enter for three days but cannot investigate the murder, just comment on the ways of the people. Hold on to your seats as there is much excitement and suspense as we find out who the murderer is. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read and review this great book.

This was an intriguing premise and setting, I found the details about the Paiute very interesting and actually expected there to be more in-depth details about the tribe and their history.

I found the writing style quite jarring, I found interactions to be immature at times and romances sprang from nowhere. The story was easy to see through and while I finished the book, there were no real surprises or mysteries.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Fierce reporter Aimee Brent finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation on Paiute lands. And the mystery and suspense begins, catching you off the guard. The ending will catch you by surprise, I bet that you will never guess it, and that is the beauty of it!

Complex mystery immersed in Native American folklore, politics, and the ongoing trial of keeping tradition versus moving forward and keeping true to what's important.
