This was completley different to what I was expecting, told with a heart wrenching back story. still a fantastic read though!
I'm a huge Karin Slaughter fan and this was another fast-paced, twisty, and complex thriller that kept me guessing until the end.
When a young girl is brought into the ER after being violently attacked, Sara does everything she can to save the girl; including hearing her confess what really happened. While her detective partner investigates, some similarities come to the surface that take Sara back to an assault she'd rather forget, 15 years ago. Could the two be connected?
One reason KS is my favourite crime author is because of how much effort she puts into her books. Each novel is well-researched and tightly plotted with great character development, and After That Night was no exception. It had the perfect pace that made it hard to stop listening, especially when I finally started making the connections. I loved how things were explored from different angles, giving multiple perspectives and dropping clues along the way. I get lost in Slaughter's writing more than any other author - she makes even the smallest mundanities interesting and pays such close attention to detail. That said, it did get a little too detailed at times, but that's to be expected when your two main characters are experts in their respective fields.
Despite having not read every book in the Will Trent series, I soon picked up on the characters and their connections. While I'm sure the previous novels would provide more context and familiarity, I found this one fine to read as a standalone. There are quite a lot of characters to keep track of but each has a role to play and isn't just in there as a filler red herring.
I reserved the next book in the series as soon as I finished, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next (and also going back to read all the other Will Trent books I've accidentally skipped).
So excited to have a new Will Trent and Sara Linton book!
We dive into Sara's difficult past, which is somehow connected to recent crimes.
Don't want to give too much away but didn't see that ending coming!!
4.5 Stars from me
Love Will Trent! Can't bring myself to watch the TV series though.
Anyway, poor Sara has been through A LOT in her life and this book drags her back to a particularly dark period of time in which what should have been a wonderful evening turned into a living nightmare and a life changing assault.
So when a woman attends the ER bearing strikingly similar injuries to those Sara sustained all those years ago - meaning there could be a serial offender who is still active - she feels compelled to get to the bottom of it for once and for all.
The dynamic between Will and Sara is fab although in truth I did have a soft spot for his ex-wife and I miss her a bit from these stories.
After That Night is yet another intelligently plotted, deep, dark, enthralling read from the powerhouse that is Karin Slaughter and I massively enjoyed it.
I always look forward to the Karin Slaughter latest book. This one did not disappoint. Lots of twists and turns and intrigue. I would thoroughly recommend
For those that love the Will Trent and Sarah Linton books will not be disappointed.
When a young girl arrives at the Grady hospital and whispers with her last breath that she was raped, Sarah is called to give evidence at the inquest but getting stopped by Britt McAlistair in the bathroom afterwards who tells her this attack was connected with Sarah's own rape 15 years earlier turns her world upside down.
Determined to find the connection, Sarah, Will and Faith start their own off book investigation and quickly find a terrifying "club" where girls and women are stalked and raped. A club run by people Sarah knew well.
As usual with Karin Slaughter this story will keep you engrossed and guessing right to the end. Love this author.
Brilliant dark thriller with twists and turns. Had me hooked. Will definitely be reading others in this collection.
Definitely recommended
Thank you Netgalley
Thank you NetGalley for approving me for this book. I am so glad I was able to read this book as I really enjoyed this and will read more by this author.
Karin Slaughter must be my favourite thriller writer of the moment. Her books are so gritty and gripping, there's a real sense of tension and threat running throughout this book that keeps you reading long into the night to be sure that the killer gets caught. This is another brilliant book that is right up there with the best in this excellent series.
This was another thrilling read by a very talented author. Ms Slaughter has been one of my favorite authors for a long time, and once again she didn't disappoint. Recommended for anyone who loves an entertaining read that just keeps on gripping you until the very end. TB
Dr. Sara Linton is a medical examiner for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), however, she also works in the ER at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital.
One night, when she’s working an extremely busy shift at the hospital, a young, 19-year-old woman is brought in. Dani Cooper collided with an ambulance and while Sara is treating her, Dani tells her that she was sexually assaulted. Sara promises to Dani that her rapist will be brought to justice. Sara deeply sympathises with Dani, as she herself experienced rape.
Three years later, and Sara is testifying against Tommy McAllister, who raped Dani. However, as Tommy comes from a rich family, he is lawyered up to high heavens.
It is then that Britt McAllister, Tommy’s mother, tells Sara that her and Dani’s assaults are connected.
But… Sara’s attacker was caught. How are two attacks spanning 15 years interlinked?
With the help from Faith Mitchell and Will Trent, two Special Agents with the GBI, Sara will have to dig deep into her own past and face her demons once more…
I love Will Trent series and I always wait for the next instalment with great anticipation.
This book is very dark, as dark as you can probably go. There are detailed descriptions of sexual assaults, and brutal descriptions of women being stalked and frightened.
Karin Slaughter tells a compelling story challenging those perceptions of rape, the “she said/ he said” debate, and that “women are asking for it because their skirts are too short”.
At times, this was a very tough read, but it was worth it.
Many thanks to Harper Collins for approving my NetGalley request to read and review this title.
Another absolute delight to read from Karin, it is exactly as fans would expect, gripping, twisty and a downright fab read!
I found this book very hard to get through. Normally I can get through a book in a few days, but this took me a lot longer. It just didn't keep my attention like her other novels. I think because it included characters from previous novels that I haven't read.
OMG
Love this series, I have read the previous books and always find them gripping
Great characters and great story line
Right going to start
This is why we lied
Biting my nails already
Thank you netgalley, Harper Collins UK and Karin Slaughter
Do not come to me for a non-biased Karin Slaughter review!!
I will always love whatever she writes and this book was no different.
Book eleven in the Will Trent series
An unputdownable book
Will have you hooked
And the ending wow
Thanks NetGalley
I love Karin Slaughter’s books and, having seen the series, I have a new love for Will Trent.
This is a book filled with the most awful things people in positions of power and trust can do - stalking, domestic violence, sexual violence - it is all described in graphic detail. However, the graphic nature of the writing doesn’t feel gratuitous - in the current day and age, it felt more like an author trying to emphasis the horror of abuse that is still regularly perpetrated my men on women and girls, and the long lasting effects.
I have not read all of Slaughter’s novels and so I found it really interesting to see how Faith and her eldest son, Jeremy, had grown as characters, and get an update on the relationship between Will and Sara Linton.
This is a real ‘who is doing it’, edge of your seat book and I didn’t guess the twist until near to the reveal, and even then I didn’t guess the extent of that twist! I found it to be well written, gripping with tension building always through to the end.
A really good crime book.
Thank you for my eARC of this book. I adore Karin Slaughter and always look forward to a new release! I am just annoyed it took me so long to get to (so many books so little time). Thank you for another brilliantly well written and engaging book! I can’t wait for more Slaughter!
Once again Karin Slaughter has brought together our favourite characters. Her style of writing gets you involved with the case. And hopefully this installment leads to closure for Sara...... These books are best enjoyed in the series so you can become fully invested with the main players.
I have previously read some of this series but only a couple and therefore do not know the ongoing story of the characters between the books. That did not impact this story, and it can be read as a stand-alone with no issue.
The basis of the story is dark, and that continues throughout. Do not expect to finish this book and feel good about the world. There are some horrible people out there, and this is a strong reminder of how unsafe the world is, especially for females. The twist at the end was very good and unexpected. I have read several books of this genre and usually guess the ending but I did not guess the twist in this one.
