Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an early review copy of this book.
In this story, events cause Sara to relive her harrowing rape of fifteen years ago. Together with Will, she investigates links between her own attack and new attacks on young women.
The book explores rape culture and the world of the idle and clever rich and how far some people will go to hide their perversions.
The writing is fantastic and I was glued to the page as each chapter unfolded. I really felt for Sara, Will and Faith, who all go through difficult experiences. The characters are wonderful, including Amanda and the potential suspects.
The only part which disappointed me was the ending. Sara comes to a realisation. However, I felt it was one which was positive for her but it would not be positive for other survivors who might still feel blame and guilt for the circumstances of their own attacks. I have to be honest and say that I did not like how the author handled this. For this reason I dropped my rating to four stars.

‘After that Night’ begins with a series of creepy text messages sent by a stranger to a young woman. He seems to know a lot about her and understandably she is unnerved by them. Then the story switches to the ER in Atlanta as a young woman is brought in having been involved in a car crash just outside the hospital. She is gravely injured and, despite Dr Sara Linton’s desperate attempts to save her, the young woman Dani Cooper, dies. But before she succumbs to her injuries, Dani tells Sara that she has been raped.
Three years later, Sara is in court to give evidence in a civil case brought by Dani’s parents against her alleged attacker, Thomas Michael McAllister. Sara and the McAllisters are already known to each other as she and Mac, Tommy’s father, were once rivals at Grady Hospital for a much coveted fellowship 15 years earlier. After the trial, Sara learns in an unexpected and harsh way from Britt, Mac’s wife, that what happened to her at Grady the night before the fellowship announcement was not a random attack or just ‘bad luck.’
Sara has managed to rebuild her life after a horrendous sexual attack on that night which left her unable to have children. This is a sorrow that she has been able to live with up to a point and she and Special Agent Will Trent are anticipating getting married soon. But there are echoes of her attack with what happened to Dani.
So when another young woman vanishes and then reappears with no memory of what happened to her, Sara, her friend Faith and Will set up their own investigation. Dani’s parents have settled out of court after nude photos of her were found on an old boyfriend’s phone. And the younger brother of an earlier victim, Merit Barrowe, who subsequently died after claiming she had been raped, provides them with evidence that the investigating cop at the time dismissed.
This leads Sara into a dark world where raping drugged young women is considered as sport or entertainment by a ‘rape club.’ They hide behind corrupt cops and their brotherhood to work in the shadows as they display their misogyny and cruelty and remain above the law. As Faith, Will and Sara go after Sara’s former classmates, it leads to a stakeout and a showdown in which Sara will have to make a disturbing choice.
This is the 11th book in the Trent/Linton series and I can see that I have a lot of catching up to do! The book’s subject was a harrowing one and it was a powerful and, at times, moving read. Sara has to once again relive what happened to her fifteen years and that it sent her life in a different direction. And Faith has to watch as her teenage son, Jeremy, chooses a different career path than the one that she had chosen for him. This book was unflinching in its depiction of its subject matter and quoted some shocking statistics. It wasn’t a comfortable book to read but it was completely convincing and believable in its honest depiction of attitudes to rape. I can understand why this series is so popular as the characters were so believable and the plot zipped along. I felt that the book almost worked as a standalone as it didn’t take me long to get up to speed with Sara and Will.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I’ve read and enjoyed all of the Trent/Linton books and this was no exception. Very disturbing in parts but necessary for the story.

A disturbing story, but the best crime novel I have read this year.

Sara Lincoln, a medical examiner, attends to Dani Cooper who is brought into hospital in a critical condition. In a heart-breaking moment, Dani implores her to find whoever sexually assaulted her before she passes away. The evidence against Tommy McAllister is circumstantial, and hence it is a civil trial, where Sara testifies. Tommy’s dad Mac McAllister was Sara’s classmate, getting a one-up over her by winning a key scholarship. In the restroom, Britt McAllister, Mac’s wife, seeming intoxicated and barely coherent tells Sara that what happened to Dani and Sara (many years back) are connected. Sara was raped 15 years back, a janitor Jack Allen Wright was arrested and served prison term. Sara finds the trauma she has lived with ever since that night rushing back full force to overpower her once again. Will Trent, who is engaged to Sara and Faith Mitchell pursue an investigation on their own. They uncover a sinister and nauseating plot where victims are chosen & sexual assaults planned & executed.

While the underlying theme is very disturbing, this story combines a strong plot with gradual & methodical build-up, great characters and good procedural work exceptionally well. This story explores the consequences of a regressive view of women, violence and the resultant scars as well as Beartown by Fredrick Backman did, in a very different style and context. The trauma & inner turmoil of the victims, especially Sara, is extremely well-written and moving.

A book I strongly recommend.

After That Night is a great addition to the Will Trent series. This can be read as a stand-alone but having read previous books in the series does give you a much better understanding of the characters history.
One night a young woman is brought into ER in a critical condition, unfortunately she dies but before doing so manages to tell medical examiner Sara Linton that she had been raped, this brings Sara’s past to the present very quickly and not in a good way. Sara is determined to get Dani Cooper the justice she deserved and as she digs into cold cases and Dani’s case she finds there are a lot of similarities to her rape that happened to her fifteen years ago.
This book does deal with quite a lot of rape and assault but it is done so sensitively. I liked how the relationship had its ups and downs between Sara and partner Will. There was more researching and digging into cold cases which I did like for this one in the series. This is a very well written book and although I did get the twists it didn’t deter my enjoyment.
I would like to thank Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

Rape. Evil beyond words. Can it be even worse? When victims die or their whole lives are ruined by one abominably selfish act. That’s evil but this book shows that there are degrees of evil and this surely tops the lot. Without giving any spoilers the degradation that these victims went through for pure lust and some sort of depraved thrill seeking are truly sickening. Karin Slaughter has
once again produced an excellent story that will revolt but also shows there are decent people in the world. The characters of Sara, Will and Faith and their tight bond are heartwarming and they risk all to help each other. Will it be enough? Will Sara get the answers she seeks to how her rape of fifteen years ago is somehow connected to the brutal attacks on young girls today? A gripping story that has twists and revelations that will horrify the reader throughout.

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for an advance copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this book on NetGalley solely based on the fact this is a Karin Slaughter novel as opposed to actually reading into what the book is about 😂

It is book 11, yes 11 in the Will Trent series, a series in which I have not read a single other book!

This book has excellent rave reviews so I am definitely in the minority but unfortunately I hated it 😂

It was written well enough that I understood what was happening without having to read the other ten books but I just did not connect at all. I didn’t warm to any of the characters, I thought they were drab with no personalities and I found the book long winded and boring. I nearly DNF’d it a few times but there were occasional parts which were tolerable enough for me to carry on.

Like I said, I’m definitely in the minority for this one so please don’t let my review put you off! It just wasn’t for me and I certainly won’t be reading my way through this series!

I am a huge Karin Slaughter fan, she's one of my favourite thriller writers and I've read all of the Grant County and Will Trent series.
In After the Night Sara tries to save the life of Dani, a young woman who has been brutally attacked. Sara soon begins to see the links between Dani's attack and Sara's sexual assault 15 years earlier. Will and Faith are drawn into the investigation which soon uncovers links with other assaults.
I love the character of Sara Linton and in After That Night, the author explains Sara's traumatic past and deepens our understanding of the relationship between Sara and Will.
It is a difficult read at times with a horrific premise and as ever Slaughter doesn't hold back on details. However there are no gratuitous details and she tackles an important subject with honesty and sensitivity.
This is another compelling read by the author that I would highly recommend.
4.5 stars.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

Karen Slaughter is the only author he keeps me guessing until the last 5 pages, no exaggeration! The way this story unwinded is so incredibly jarring, her twists always shock me and I’m never able to guess the ending correctly (as I’m able to do with most thrillers). This book really delves into the world of sadist masochism, and although fiction, it really hits home for females living in todays world. 5 stars for sure, can’t wait for her next release!

If you love Ms Slaughter (and Will Trent), this book is perfect, The story really features his partner, Sara Linton .who is medical examiner. The story unfolds brilliantly as there is a close connection to a trial and the medical examiner gives evidence with such similarities to an attack on Sarah 15 years ago. Is Sarah paranoid and making it up?

Plenty of explanations of female body parts after violent physical attacks, and, whilst gruesome, Ms Slaughter always brings in touches of humour.

It has to be five stars for such a superb read!

Many thanks to Net Galley and HarperCollins UK for the chance to read and review.

Wow what more can I say . After reading all of this authors books this one did not disappoint. Interesting how it went back in time to the original attack after all this time but it was good the way it was happening in the present day too . This book will stay with me after reading about this group of men . It was certainly hard reading at times and was very dark at times . All in all it was a brilliant book and as always I can’t get enough of this author . 5 stars from me and I will definitely recommend

This is the latest addition to an already well established series which has also merged with another "Grant County" series so there are a LOT of books to play catch-up with if you are so inclined, and want to get the very best from it and the characters. I have only dipped in and out, having come to the series late and have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one I have read without knowing the full background(s).
So... in this book we follow Sara as she struggles when her past becomes her present. She is working in the ER when a young woman is brought in having been brutally attacked. Sara does everything she can but fails to save her. And she is then spirited back to her own past when the investigation into Dani's death starts to bare uncanny parallels to what happened in Sara's own past when she herself was also violently attacked. A past that she thought she had dealt with and left behind (as much as any one can) but its inclusion into her present forces her not only to face it once again but also which throws up some really nasty stuff...
It's a hard hitting book which pulls none of its punches. I have been with Sara and Will for a while now and felt for both of them equally and differently as they battle to work out what in the heck is happening and what they can do to stop it and bring justice to those affected. I am trying to be as oblique as possible as not only do I not want spoilers, I also feel its important to learn what you need to learn when the author wants you to!
Suffice to say this book shocked and saddened me and, even with me having read thousands of similarly hard hitting books, I do admit to having to take five on occasion whilst reading it. Not that I felt in any way unsafe, don't get me wrong. And the author does nothing to sensationalise things. It's just the subject matter is so awful and the characters so evil and real that I had to step away and cuddle my cat!
All in all, a brutal but important story, very well told. One I can't say I enjoyed due to the subject matter but you know what I mean. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

After That Night by Karin Slaughter is yet another outstanding thriller by an author who is right at the top of my must-read list!

Will Trent and Sara Linton are drawn into an investigation following the death of a patient rushed to the emergency room at the Grady Memorial hospital. Sara is deeply affected by the tragedy and promises to do her best to find the person who assaulted the young Dani Cooper leading to her death.

Along with Will's partner Faith Mitchell, they start an unofficial investigation after local police determine the death to be simply a drugs overdose. This is only the first hurdle that they face. The extent of what they discover is both shocking and stomach-churning.

This Karin Slaughter thriller is as good as any that I have read; the plotting is exceptional, the pace is just right and the characters are great.

I’m a late comer to Slaughter’s writing, I read my way through the Grant County series last year and after having read a couple of the Will Trent books out of order I have started reading them from the beginning now so have been a little all over the place with it.

The good thing with for a reader like me with the plot of this one is that a lot of the focus is on the horrific attack that was carried out against Sara Linton and that was covered in the Grant County series so I wasn’t too lost. Slaughter does fill the reader in a little so it wouldn’t matter too much if you’re a brand new reader but I do think with books like this you get so much more out of them if you read the series in order and I’m already looking forward to re-reading this one when I get back up to it.

The subject matter is pretty tough going and I’d encourage readers to check content warnings as I’m sure it could be triggering for some. Rape and sexual violence feature quite prominently and whilst nothing is too graphic and Slaughter certainly isn’t gratuitous in her depictions of these crimes it’s still obviously a tough topic.

I love the dynamic between Will and his partner, Faith. That’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to as I work my way through the series, currently I’ve seen the start of the their working relationship and now where it gets to and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the relationship develops.

Will Trent is one of my favourite characters in Slaughter’s books. I love how he is different to most of the crime fighting type characters and how he works to his strengths.

This one is another absolute hit for me and I just know Slaughter’s fans are going to love it.

She’s done it again, I adore Karin slaughter books. The rape descriptors aren’t my favourite but that’s a me thing it’s the only thing I struggle to read / watch. But we get a gritty nail biting read here& the story was fab. We get loveable characters and characters you’ll struggle to not despise with your entire being! Fast paced & thoroughly enjoyable !

While working in the ER at Grady Memorial Hospital, Dr Sara Linton treated and failed to save Dani Cooper, a grievously injured young woman, who told Sara she had been raped. Dani’s death and the civil trial that followed, where Sara appeared as a witness, triggered terrible memories for Sara of her own rape fifteen years before when she was a trainee doctor at Grady, an event which totally changed the course of her life.

Now employed as the medical examiner for the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and engaged to GBI agent Will Trent, Sara just wants to look forward to their future together but Dani’s case continues to haunt her and cause flashbacks. So, when she’s told that there is a link between her rape and Dani’s, Will and his partner Faith Mitchell decide they need to investigate those claims. Although they need to find time to do it outside their current assignments, without their extremely scary boss Amanda Wagner knowing.

This dark and gritty thriller is a terrific addition to the series. It doesn’t pull any punches and there are vivid descriptions of stalking and rape and the effects these have on their victims. It’s a gripping tale of misogyny and the power wielded by arrogant men who believe they are untouchable. To investigate this world, Will has to go undercover as one such man, a feat that almost undoes him. Amanda is magnificent once Will and Faith garner the strength to fill her in on what they’ve uncovered and the climax is riveting. Karin Slaughter continues to amaze with her ability to keep brining hard hitting and powerful storylines to her novels and this one is not to be missed.

I have to be honest and say this was not one of the best books I’ve read by Karin Slaughter. The common theme of sexual assault is handled again but I find each book just gets more graphic and far fetched. If you like intricate detail of procedures and processes (and yes, unfortunately, assaults and attacks) then you’ll love the book. It certainly has the shock factor. For me, it was too much detail and at times unnecessary. Just my opinion though!
3.5*

If there is one author guaranteed to have me shut myself away and just read, it’s Karin Slaughter. The other bonus is that it’s a new Will Trent and Sara Linton book!

This is a difficult story to read. It goes back at times to the most awful time in Sara’s life and we learn more about that period of time.

A tale of police corruption and also how wealth can buy your way out of anything - and still does happen even now.

I found the story made me upset and emotional at times. The author handles the subject sensitively and compassionately when needed. Although difficult to read, it is an outstanding story.

My thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins U.K. for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
