Awesome.
Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton’s life changed forever when a celebratory night out ended in a violent attack that tore her world apart. Since then, Sara has remade her life. A successful doctor, engaged to a man she loves, she has finally managed to leave the past behind her. Until one evening, on call in the ER, everything changes. Sara battles to save a broken young woman who’s been brutally attacked. But as the investigation progresses, led by GBI Special Agent Will Trent, it becomes clear that Dani Cooper’s assault is uncannily linked to Sara’s. And the past isn’t going to stay buried forever .
I love her books and this is so brilliant. Loved it
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Harper Fiction for giving me an advance copy.
This was my first Karin Slaughter book and I was really looking forward to it as my friends and family had recommended this author.
I didn’t realise when I started it that it’s the 11th book in a series about Sara Linton and Will Trent, he is a GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) agent and Sarah is a medical examiner. It is entirely possible to read this as a standalone but on reflection, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the other books in the series first.
I found it quite complicated initially, but I have just had major surgery and now have Covid so that might have something to do with my brain functioning. The further into the book I got the more intrigued I became.
I will certainly read more of this author, I might just go back to the start of the series and read them all!!
In different circumstances for me, it might have been 5* but as I said, I found it quite complex to start with.
Karen Slaughter does it again.
11th in the series with Will and Sara, I love this series and the characters, this story brings up Sara`s rape from 15yr ago after she attends a case in A&E who admits she was raped before she died.
The plot from past to present is woven together well, some descriptions are very graphic but the story is very gripping from beginning to end.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC
I found this book a bit slow moving and not as gripping as the author's previous books. It was hard to really warm to the character of Dr Sara despite the horrific ordeal she went through. Thank you for the ARC
When I learned there’s a new addition to the Will Trent and Sara Linton series, I could not wait to get my hands on it! I’ve read everything Karin Slaughter has written and am always on the lookout for what she’s got for us next. And there’s a good reason for that.
After That Night was just as imaginative and gritty, captivating and page turning as you would expect if you have read and liked the previous books in this series. It did not disappoint with anything, including giving us more back story for the characters we already knew, introducing new ones to the mix and the twists and turns in the plot. It also left plenty still unsaid so even after consuming this book in record time I’m still on the edge of my seat, desperately waiting to find out what happens next.
I find it harder to review Slaughter novels every time I receive one, someone please write a guide on how to review with gushing- I am in dire need.
Obviously this was a 5 star for me, I knew going in it would be, which perhaps pushed my expectations higher thus making the top marks even harder to hit? Or maybe the years worth of character development Slaughter has built in with Sara and Will made it an inevitable slam dunk since there are no two fictional characters I'm more invested in.
If you haven't read any of the Atlanta/Grant County series before After That Night then stop immediately and go to the beginning, MASSIVE spoilers for previous titles you honestly cannot start this series in the middle.
There are many other Slaughter titles to choose from if you'd rather not start a new series, I recommend them all AND they're always on sale.
The latest in this series After That Night is another treasure where Slaughter ties present day crimes to the past of an established character; in this case Sara.
The pacing is perfect, the new character additions are well developed and the majority of the previous character cast make an appearance.
Written in third from multiple perspectives we follow GBI agents Will and Faith alongside medical examiner Sara as they go off book to break the case of a serial rapist with ties to Sara's past.
As always with a Slaughter novel the trigger warnings are many, anyone who prefers to avoid abusive plot lines should steer well clear but as I've mentioned before these events are always written in past tense making them less jarring- for me at least.
Slaughter balances the depravity well with an abundance of heart warming moments and supportive relationships between the main characters.
After That Night contains an absolute jaw dropper that hits extremely hard if you're a long time reader of the series, for those who are I probably don't need to convince you to pick this title up.
May the series long continue.
Will Trent is one of my all time fave characters and iv read all 10 books……….twice, so it was great to get this early copy of number 11 and it didn’t disappoint, I love the Will and Sara romance as well as his relationships with Amanda and Faith, Faith I love also with some of her quips and one liners making me chuckle. The plot got a little far fetched to my liking but I still thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to number 12 coming out. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this early copy.
This is the 11th book featuring GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, but my first exposure to them. It took me a while to get into the groove and understand what was going on, but once I'd grasped that the couple "have history," and Linton, in the last 15 years, has overcome a personal trauma by becoming an ER doctor, it was easy to pick up the pieces.
There's less crime in this novel than in the usual Slaughter books but it's no less interesting. Instead we're looking at patterns and cold cases, which always fascinate. One night a young woman is brought into the ER in a critical condition, and before she dies she tells Sara Linton who killed her. Linton is determined to get justice for Dani Cooper, and finds that her case bears startling similarities to the assault against her, 15 years ago.
The usual nail biter from this expert of the genre.
Thanks to Harper Collins for the ARC via NetGalley.
I've loved Karin Slaughter's books since I read the very first Sara Linton book more years ago than I care to remember. However, I have to admit, I haven't picked up any of her Will Trent/Sara Linton series in quite some time, so when I saw this available for request, I jumped at the chance to read it.
All hail, Ms Slaughter, Queen, yes Queen, of crime writers!!
This was dark, gritty, disturbing with a great balance of familiar characters (Will, Sara, Faith) we love alongside characters you will absolutely love to despise. There are trigger warnings aplenty so please check those before you read.
The story begins roughly two and a half years prior to the main action, with Sara caught up in a potential rape/murder case, and then we see her in present day, testifying at the civil trial connected to this case. We discover very quickly that this case is very closely connected to her own attack fifteen years prior which changed the path of her medical career and also left her unable to have children.
Will and partner Faith have been on separate journeys career-wise in the meantime with Will working undercover and Faith relegated to desk duties. However, at Sara's request, they are willing to pick up a very similar case on the side, setting up shop in Faith's kitchen, doing everything off-book to try to find justice for the increasing number of potential victims.
There are some horrific people in this book, and there are extreme scenes of domestic violence alongside rape and murder cases - this is not a book for the faint-hearted. However, if you're a fan of Slaughter's work, then this is a must-read. It is very much character-driven with Slaughter's tried and tested formula. Please don't think that is a criticism. Very much the opposite. If it ain't broke, why fix it? After a long break from such familiar characters, this felt like coming home.
The subject matter is dark, and it is terrifying to think that such people probably do exist out there, but there are good guys, too. Go, run, don't walk and read this book!
This goes straight to the top of my books of the year list! From the very first page I was hooked. It could be triggering to some with the storyline focused on rape, but it’s handled honestly and sensitively.
Will and Sara are two of my favourite characters. They bounce off each other perfectly which adds to the inability to put the book down. That sucker punch of an ending as well was awesome. Not expecting it all, although I probably should have done. I will be having a reread in the future.
A fantastic addition to this series as you come to expect from a Karin Slaughter novel. The exploits continue with Sara and Will, and this is a great thriller with plenty of twists and turns.
Amazing as always from this fabulous lady. Wow the twist at the end is just beautiful, never for a second did I predict that ending.
It was written very well and is also researched well.
‘After that Night,’ is the eleventh book in the Will Trent series by author Karin Slaughter. I have long been an admirer of this author’s books and this series in particular so was eagerly waiting to read this latest offering. GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton are back and are put to the test. This is a very well written story that kept me reading long into the night.
The beginning of the novel tells of Sara Linton’s life fifteen years ago when she was violently attacked leaving her life shattered. Since then she has fought to rebuild her life finding solace as a successful doctor and preparing to marry the man she loves. However, the past resurfaces when Sara encounters a young woman, Dani Cooper, brutally assaulted, and the investigation headed by Will Trent reveals an uncanny connection to Sara’s own traumatic experience.
This is a nail biting plot that is layered with suspense, twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout. Well written characters, especially Will Trent and Sara Linton who I feel come to life on the pages.
This is one of the best Karin Slaughter novels I have read and eagerly await the next one. With its engrossing plot, well-drawn characters, and skilful prose it is a very good read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Karin Slaughter is an incredible writer and this book continues t0 enhance her reputation. Will Trent and Sara Linton are tasked with untangling a very complex and personal crime. This is a very fast paced thriller with great characters, a plot line that continues and changes right till the dramatic end. It is a page turner that will leave you looking forward to the next Karen Slaughter book.
Wow! I cannot praise this book enough. I love Karin Slaughter’s books and this is no exception. The writing is brilliant, so easy to read it’s like slicing through warm butter.
A brilliant, heart breaking story with great characters. The storyline kept me gripped as the hideous nature of the crimes unfolded.
A story of violence against women that is not for the feint hearted.
An absolutely gripping read.
A compelling gripping read. I found it hard to put this book down.
Some of the scenes are a little tough to read given the subject matter but you just want to read on in the hope that there is justice for the victims at the end.
The main characters are relatable and eminently likeable.
A great read!
I
I'm a big fan of Karin Slaughter's work so I was really excited to receive this ARC and definitely was not disappointed. Her writing style is incredible and the story had me hooked from start to finish!
I really enjoyed this book, Sara Linton has been a favourite character of mine for years and I started with her from the very first book she featured in, so this book had extra meaning for me as you knew the history of the story but bringing it back up in such a clever way, Karin Slaughter once again shows why she’s one of the best authors around. This story had me gripped, it was full of mystery, corruption, evil and resolution- start it asap, you’ll not stop reading until the end!!
Sara Linton's world was shattered 15 years ago. However, she has rebuilt her life and moved on.
She is a doctor and one night in A & E her life would change again.
Although this is the first Will Trent and Sara Linton book I have read of the eleven that Karin Slaughter has written I feel I was able to grasp the characters and their history quite easily. Full marks to the author for her research and knowledge of the content that formed the basis of this book which was very detailed in the early stages. If I am to be honest I thought the book could have been edited down to provide a shorter and faster moving book. I am very grateful to the publishers for the chance to be an Advanced Reader via NetGalley and the chance to discover the lives of Will and Sara.
