As always Karin Slaughter is superb. I've read a lot of her books and this one featuring Will andSara doesn't disappoint. The subject matter us, at times, disturbing but the story has you gripped from the very first page. Absolutely brilliant.
Dr. Sara Linton works in one of Atlanta's hospitals. She is beginning a relationship with Special Agent Will Trent. When a young woman Dani Cooper is brought into the hospital, she is badly injured from a car accident but claims she was drugged and raped. Despite Sara's efforts Dani dies.
Twenty two year old Thomas Michael McAllister is put on a civil trial with Sara giving evidence. Sara knows his parents Mac and Britt. Mac was her rival and was awarded a top cardiologists position.
Faith Mitchell is Will's work partner and is a good friend of Sara. She is a single mother. Teresa is Sara's sister going through a divorce and recently moved into Sara's apartment block. Sara is disappointed when Dani's parents agree to a financial settlement.
Sara is told something by an obviously drugged up Britt, that there is a group of one time high school men who are targetting young women as part of a game. Her husband is the ring leader.
Will, Faith and Sara start to investigate. In all this intrigue Will and Sara get married. Sara has been raped in the past. her rapist was jailed, however Britt infers that Sara's rape is similar to Dani's!
It is sometime since I have read anything by the author. The storytelling is as good as ever, keeps you engaged. Very much recommended.
Enjoyed this one.
The downsides were that I half expected the main twist/reveal and the fact that there were a few too many characters to keep track of. For the latter point, fans of the series may be at an advantage as I've only read one of the previous books.
Aside from that the book was very good. It covered a very tricky topic without too much graphic detail and stress. It felt more procedural rather than first-person action with more revealed in interviews and investigation rather than straight-up action.
Nevertheless the plot unfolded nicely and certainly had enough to keep it all interesting all the way through.
Thanks very much for the ARC.
This is a chillingly stomach turning and harrowing addition to Karin Slaughter's GBI Special Agent Will Trent and medical examiner Dr Sara Linton Atlanta based series with its echoes of worrying real life contemporary realities. When Dani Cooper died of her brutal injuries after telling her she had been raped, Sara is determined to get her justice. However, that was easier said than done as 3 years later she is testifying at the civil trial of the alleged rapist, Tommy McAllister, which hinges entirely on her testimony. An anguished Sara learns there are connections between what happened to Dani and the harrowing sexual assault she experienced 15 years ago which left her unable to have children. Furthermore, it appears they were far from the only victims.
There is nothing Sara would not do to stop the terror and emotional quagmire of revisiting what happened to her all those years ago, but she is haunted by Dani, which is how Will and his PTSD suffering GBI partner, Faith Mitchell, end up conducting a below the radar inquiry that ventures on Atlanta PD territory. It speaks volumes about their commitment to the case that they are willing to go behind their terrifying boss, Amanda Wagner's back. This is to bring Will face to face with the trauma of seeing his hated Aunt Eliza, now a dying woman, just so that he can go undercover at an exclusive country club, he is to find himself touching the very limits of what he can cope with. Sara, Will and Faith find themselves on the most twisty and suspenseful of personal inquiries where they encounter the most disturbing of misogyny, a ruthless and powerful rape club with the arrogance to believe they will never have to pay for their heinous crimes, corrupt cops, and more.
This is a nightmare of a case simultaneously drawing attention to just how close Will and Sara's relationship is in the run up to their marriage, they are everything to each other, this bodes well for their future together. Faith finds herself pushed to the brink when all the dreams she has had for her precious son, Jeremy, threaten to splinter apart, and Amanda once again proves just how ferociously able she is once she becomes involved. I am not going to lie, this is a tough read, we are not spared the details of the sexual assaults and the type of people who embark on committing such unspeakable crimes, but it is an important read. I will never forget Sara's conversation at a New York with another rape survivor, Sloan Bauer, and the lens through which much of the world views and treats women who are raped. An unmissable addition to a brilliant series! Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.
After That Night is a brilliant instalment in the Will Trent series. Karin Slaughter is a master of writing complex detailed plots that are engaging and well paced with a satisfying ending.
Another must read 5 star thriller.
After That Night is the eleventh book in the Will Trent series by best-selling American author, Karin Slaughter. Three years after Sara Linton desperately tries to save the life of an accident victim in the ED at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, she’s testifying in a civil court in a compensation suit for the young woman’s wrongful death.
As her treating doctor, Sara was the only one who heard Danielle Cooper’s claim that she was raped, and her plea to please stop him. All the evidence pointed to Tommy McAllister, med student at Emory and son of two wealthy doctors, a couple who use their influence to engage effective representation to save their son’s reputation. After all, they’ve done it before.
But, having completed her testimony, Sara encounters Tommy’s mother in the bathroom, tearful, distraught and clearly under the influence of a substance. Britt McAllister’s words reveal that she knows what her son has done; moreover, she links Dani’s assault to the one that Sara endured fifteen years earlier. And yet, she believes she can rehabilitate her son.
Some of what Britt has said leads Sara to believe that this is not a singular event, that other perpetrators are involved, and that other young women are in danger. Apparently it relates back to a Friday night mixer Sara attended before her attack, where her then beau and his gang of med student friends, who included the McAllisters, were in the habit of getting drunk and obnoxious. But Sara identified the man who assaulted her. He went to prison.
How can it possibly be linked to the attack on Dani Cooper, twelve years later? As she and Will and Faith puzzle over Britt’s words, Will says: “When two things are connected, you investigate both things. So, in order to look at what Tommy’s been up to, we’d have to look into what happened to you. And if we’re good at our jobs and find the connection that Britt is talking about, that means there’s a criminal prosecution, and if there’s a criminal prosecution—”
Which is how they find themselves conducting their own investigation, very much under the radar of the Atlanta Police Department, without the knowledge of their truly scary GBI boss, Amanda Wagner. And all this, as Sara’s family and friends make preparations for her wedding to Will. But the last thing, surely, that Sara wants to do is to resurrect the awful incident that completely changed her life fifteen years earlier? Then another young woman goes missing…
Even as Slaughter gives the reader an, at times, quite confronting read, a tension-filled narrative that twists and surprises before the final dramatic climax, she uses the (often dark) humour in dialogue, Faith Mitchell’s especially, and in Will’s inner monologue, to lighten the mood: “Amanda walked around her desk and sat down beside him. He often forgot how tiny she was. Sitting on the edge of the chair, she looked small enough to fit in his pocket, if he was the type of man who would put a live scorpion in his pocket.”
All the regulars (except Lena) feature in this instalment, with all their best qualities as well as their flaws and insecurities on display. Will shows a real talent for ad-libbing, and copes well with the prospect of dancing at his wedding. That she will, with each new novel, surpass her previous work is by now a given: Karin Slaughter never disappoints.

The Queen of murder, mayhem, grit and grime is back with Will Trent #11. I’ve been reading Karin Slaughter since the very beginning and will carry on reading her until … well, you get the picture. Ms Slaughter, you keep writing them and I’ll definitely keep reading them, it’s a no brainer, the stories get better and better, so do the characters as they become voices in their own right.
‘After that Night’ sees the team (Will, Sara and Faith) working closely together to solve the abduction, rape and murder of a young medical student, we also see Sara’s back story padding out and becoming more tangible. An easy read it isn’t, but a gripping read it most certainly is.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. A very easy 5 stars, highly recommended.
After that night by Karin Slaughter is the first book from the Will Trent / Sarah Linton series that I have read. But I was interested to read as I have been watching the TV series based on them.
Fifteen years ago, when Sarah Linton was a medical student, she was raped on a night out. The result in that night was she can no longer have children. Present day she has a now put the incident behind her and now a successful doctor and is engaged to Will Trent. She is on the night shift at the ER when a young girl Dani comes in brutally attacked and is in a very bad way. She tell Sarah that she has been drugged and raped. Due to her injuries, she dies. The investigation into her death is led by Will. The death of Dani is part of a gang that go and drug women and rape them for their displeasure. But as they delve further that there is similarities to Sarah’s rape that happened all of them years ago. Will Trent and co need to find who is responsible before they strike again.
Thank you, Harper Collins, for my first outing of Karin Slaughter. This is a compelling and interesting read, and I did enjoy it. But it is not an easy read regarding the subject matter. It is quite graphic in parts and sometimes I felt a bit long winded. But all fans of this series. It is well worth the read. 4 stars from me.
Having read all previous novels by this author, I was looking forward to the return of the Sara Linton/Will Trent series. Slightly disappointed? Yes. Completing the back story to Sara Linton's trauma isn't the issue. It's just not as original as I expected & more than a little contrived. There is an editing error, where one scene is set in a black room, with black walls & floor only for the climax/reveal to be staged in a white room. Also, the protagonist twist? Not sure, considering the psychology of domestic violence? And what's with characters being brought in & oh so conveniently being manipulated into other law enforcement agencies? Similar to another crime writer, who often has an extended family of characters. I miss the edginess of Karin Slaughter's early novels.
This is quite a detailed story concerning Will Trent and Sara Linton. Sara is fighting to try to save a young woman who has been attacked, but then finds that the attack on Dani has some similarities with the assault she suffered years ago. The pattern of attacks start to build up, and Will and Sara are drawn in to find out who is responsible and if there is any link to Sara's attack.
Will is an interesting character - severely dyslexic but having access to all the modern technology to help him (which sadly isn't the case for so many). One does feel the author rams this rather down the reader's throat on occasion, but he elicits sympathy and interest. Sara has integrity and knowledge, which she brings to the fore in this story. There are some incredibly entitled and unpleasant characters in the story, and Sara has to work around these to find the truths they are hiding.
It kept me gripped, a real rollercoaster, as we discover how and why these women were being chosen and raped. Its not an easy read, but it certainly keeps you turning the page.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have only read one of this series before, but I’m going to be looking out for them even more now. It’s no wonder that Karin Slaughter is so renowned as an author, this book is terrific. Tense, scary, unpredictable and with great characters. Unmissable.
Another great psychological crime from Karin Slaughter. Gripping from the first last page. The book is very descriptive. I found it hard to read at times. From reading other books by this author the reader already knows the main characters Sara and Will. As the past and present come together it reaches an explosive climax. Be warned the book is very graphic and upsetting, it’s definitely a page turner that will stay with the reader for a long time.
When Dr Sara Linton was attacked as a med student, she did everything possible to put it behind her.
15 years later Dani Cooper is rushed into Sara’s ED, having been brutally beaten. Sara promises Dani she will find the person who did it. Testifying at the civil trial of Tommy McAllister, 3 years later, Sarah feels like everything she has accomplished is about to come crashing down. A chance meeting with Tommy’s mother, a woman who Sara knew at the time of her attack, leaves Sara feeling exposed and confused. Just what does Britt McAllister know about the attacks on both Dani and Sara.
Telling her fiancé Special Agent Will Trent and his colleague Faith what happened with Britt leads to them looking into another case that could be linked to Sara and Dani.
As they continue to dig, what they find will be far worse than they expected and will take Sara back to a time she would really rather forget. Powerful and moving this is one you won’t want to put down.
gripping, addictive and completely unpredictable. I devoured this book in just one sitting. This is unique and pulled me in quickly. Well-written and able to transport the reader.
I've read several of Karin Slaughter's standalone novels, but this was the first book I've read in the Will Trent series and I loved it.
Will and Sara are now engaged, but their happiness is tested when a patient dies in the ER after having been brutally attacked and raped. There are similarities with what happened to Sara herself 15 years ago, so Will and Faith decide to take on the investigation unofficially.
I loved the chemistry between Will and Sara, in the present time line as well as in the flashbacks. I want to go back and read the previous books in the series now.
Suspenseful. dark and addictive with some lovely and some hateful characters!
I simply love love love this series!! Will and Sarah are my favourite couple and it was so good to delve deeper into their world.
Although some of this covers a difficult subject, Karen has done it well.
This is a 100 star book if ever there was such a thing!
“There no right or wrong here. There only what you can live with. All you have to know is that I’ve got you either way”
It’s no secret that I absolutely love Karin Slaughter and I was recommend her to everyone. She pulls no punches, it is a powerful, shocking, bleak and utterly gripping read!!
In this instalment we deal with both Sara and Will’s past being brought into the present. You are left wondering how it can be connected to the present events and crimes?
More crime, more conspirators, violence against women and men wielding all their power.
We have an excellent cast of characters who some have seem to have gotten a slightly softer side to them. If you’ve read from the start you will see that Faith, will and Sara have really grown so much and they work so so well together!
Jeremy is just the sweetest and amazing boy and I hope we get to see more of him in the next book🥹. His need to help others and want justice is just 😭
Whilst trying to solve a harrowing and graphic grime, we have moments of humorous scenes that allow us to catch our breath. Because boy did we need it😳
What a nail biter, had me on the edge of my seat. Those twists, Jesus I was shocked about Brit 🫣😱. Also Sara really knocked it out the park, I was cheering her on!!
Truly some of these characters were sadist and it made it hard for me to feel sorry for them to be honest.
Honestly, I can never thought Karin. You can tell how much research and detail has gone into writing this novel. The medical jargon and information was just spot. I CAN NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS BOOK!!
I struggled to put this one down. So great to be back in the world of Will, Sara & Faith and to also see Sara’s story from 15 years ago revisited.
Loved this addition to the series & would highly recommend.
I was unaware that this novel was part of a series of books with Sarah Linton and Will Trent. Having said that this was a perfect stand alone book.
I did enjoy it, although found it to be unnecessary long and repetitive in parts.
I will definitely read another book by Karin Slaughter.
I woukd like to thank Harper Collins and NetGalley for my ARC., for which I have given my unbiased review
Another installment in Will Trent series. I am not usually a fan of Sara Linton who can come across as annoying but I really enjoyed her character in this book and my opinion of her changed. The story takes us back 15 years where a traumatic incident changed Sara's life.
Sara revisit her past after a meeting with an old colleague. She then needs Will and Faith's help to discover what happened all those years earlier.
I thought this was one of my favourite books in this series. Will and Faith were as fabulous a team as ever but I really enjoyed Amanda and Jeremy's parts I this story.
Highly, highly recommend
