Reading this thriller, which continues the story of Georgia investigator Will Trent and his fiancée, paediatrician and medical examiner Sara Linton, feels a lot like having old friends come visit –
especially as the author has concentrated on stand-alone books for the past two years.
The 11th book in the Will Trent series starts with Dani, a young woman severely injured in a car accident, being brought into the ER in Atlanta where Sara is on duty. Dani tells Sara she was raped but she doesn’t name her attacker before she dies. This triggers the trauma Sara endured when she was raped while interning as a paediatric surgeon in the same hospital 15 years earlier.
The story jumps ahead three years to Sara testifying in a civil case brought by Dani’s parents against the main suspect, the son of two doctors who were interns with Sara at the time of her assault. The suspect’s mother cryptically reveals to Sara that her and Dani’s attacks are linked.
Will and Faith, his Georgia Bureau of Investigations partner, have no authority in this case so they start their own clandestine investigation with Sara.
As with many of Slaughter’s novels, it’s gripping, disturbing and not an easy read, but the author is thoughtful in her handling of the perceptions and treatment of rape victims.
The book is written in a way that won’t alienate readers who’re new to the characters, but knowing Will and Sara’s back stories makes it a far more emotional and absorbing read for those who’ve known Sara from her days in the earlier Grant County book series.

Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series is one of my favourites in the genre, and I’m always eager to return for more. After the ending of The Silent Wife, I was desperate to see what would come next for the series. Thus, I was more than happy to dive into After That Night.

As with every Karin Slaughter book, After That Night was a story that I could not put down. I will admit that a part of me wanted to explore the relationship between the characters more (after following them for so many books, I am deeply invested in watching their happily ever after play out), but that was not enough to take away from the power of the book. It hit hard throughout, dealing with heavy topics, making me feel for all involved. It was not quite the level of mystery that other books in the series have offered, but the biggest power of this books comes from the way it deals with the characters and mixing the past and the present. Yes, it was easy to work some elements out. However, this never took away from the story. You wanted to see justice served, you wanted to see the characters grow, you wanted everything to come together in a certain way.

Without a doubt, this is another must-read for fans of the series. A part of me wants a short story that focuses purely upon the characters getting their happy moments, but I’ll gladly take snapshots of it within another gripping addition to the series. As always, I am eager for more.

After That night is a Will Trent and Sara Linton novel. Sara has been building up to giving evidence at the civil trial of Tommy McAllister the young spoilt son of Britt and Mac both of whom did their residency with Sara at Grady hospital. Three years ago Sara was covering the ED at Grady when Dani Cooper died after declaring she had been drugged and raped by Tommy. Unfortunately there was no definitive evidence as despite finding Tommy’s semen inside her they could not prove it was anything but consential so there could be no criminal charges brought. On the day Sara gives evidence she ends up in the ladies washroom with a very distraught Britt, who being high on prescription medications and angry at Sara makes a comment about Sarah’s own rape from 15 years before. That conversation will change everything for Sara and lead to Will and his partner Faith starting a clandestine case against Mac McAllister and his close group of male friends .
Karin Slaughter’s novels are always incredible reads that hook you from the start and lead you on a roller coaster of emotions and finish up with you wanting more and this latest doesn’t disappoint.

My first introduction to Will Trent and Faith, his partner at the GBI, safe to say I loved the story.

The book has a powerful cast of characters, all so clearly portrayed that it was easy to follow them. Sara Linton, the medical examiner and fiancée of Will is made of strong stuff. I really liked her and her reasoning/philosophies, particularly after everything she has faced in her past.

It is a brilliantly written crime fiction, sometimes delivering quite
harrowing scenes, necessary to keep the realism of the story. It is
a very dark, well-written plot, covering a very tough (possibly triggering) area of crime, with authenticity and pulling no punches, whilst including great sensitivity for the victims.

Although this is part of a series, it worked very well as a stand-alone. Karin Slaughter is now firmly on my ‘must-read’ author list! Compulsive reading.

There are just so many good things I could say about this book. I absolutely tore (pun intended) through this read . Everyone needs to go read it

I hadn't read a Will Trent book before but have read other books by the authors. Then I watched and loved the TV series. Whilst book Will and TV Will do not look alike I still got the same vibe from them (although I must admit I think TV Will is now "my Will" in my head!!!)

Will and Sara are settling into their new engagement but trauma from Sara's past has come back to haunt her via an old case now at trial. Sara recognises the parallels between Dani's case and her own rape. Her rapist had gone to jail so why are there so many links between the cases.

Faith is also struggling with motherhood second time around and her fling with an FBI agent isn't the well-kept secret they thought it was!

The storyline is well crafted and the trauma Sara overcame is dealt with realistically and with care. Whilst the SA scenes are never gratuitous, there may be readers for whom this may be too much to read. I felt Sara was empathetic and strong and Will was her perfect foil. Faith is the mistress of multi-tasking and she has done such a good job of raising her son, essentially only with her tribe of LEO family for support. Yet she still seems so rocked to the core when her son makes a decision on his future.

Strong, powerful, skincrawling, suspenseful. There were times I cried for the women traumatised, when I wanted to reach into the book and throttle some characters and the utter revulsion for all things "mixer". I'll eventually get around to reading all the Will Trent books and I know I'm pretty much going to love them all if they are all this good!

Karin Slaughter's novels are always a pleasure: twisty, gripping and tightly plotted.
This an excellent one that mixes the detective and the medical side of an investigation and never let you attention wane.
Excellent storytelling and well developed characters
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Not my favourite of her books, but still a compelling story that captured my interest and held it right to the conclusion. Definitely one that'll appeal more to readers of her earlier Will Trent books, 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars

I've read Karin Slaughter previously but not from the Will Trent series forgive I am aware of this due to my wife watching a TV series based upon it, which I also haven't watched.

As an introduction to the series this was an excellent although very dark tale of rape and sexual violence.

Very well written characters and a storyline which moved along at a good pace. I didn't feel disadvantaged by not having read any previous books in this series and would certainly be keen to go back and read some more based upon this one. As police/law enforcement procedural books go this is an excellent example of how to do it well.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the advance copy of this in exchange for my honest review.

I'm a huge fan of Karin Slaughter and the characters she has created. In this instalment of the story of Sara Linton and Will Trent (along with Amanda and Faith) we finally learn the truth about an attack Sara suffered many years ago. The story itself is gripping and detailed in its description of the violence endured by all victims. Karin Slaughter knows how to keep you engaged and this is one of her best. As always, the characters are well rounded and you are rooting for the good guys all the way through. I loved it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my copy of this book.

I absolutely adored this book. I read the whole thing within days and ended up finishing it at work, where I had to stop myself crying reading the ending! I haven't yet read a bad Karin Slaughter book and now want to read the entire Will Trent series. I would definitely recommend this - even if you haven't read all of the others, as I haven't, you can still enjoy it as a standalone novel.

After That Night has three main characters - cops Will and Faith, and medical professional Sara. The three are pulled into looking into a horrific pattern of rape and abuse when Dani Cooper appears in Sara's hospital following being abducted and raped. Dani dies from her injuries and Sara is determined to find out the truth about what happened to her in order to honour her death. However, delving into the details brings up her own painful past and memories of her rape 15 years previously.

There are some truly sickening parts of the book as the scale of the historical abuse they are looking into becomes clearer. Slaughter is great at capturing the casual misogyny and nastiness of some men. She has also created a complex character in Britt, the wife of one such man. The pace of the plot is good and there are surprises along the way.

As is often the case with good crime novels, the characters keep you reading as much as the plot, if not more so. All three main characters are very well-crafted and relatable. As a reader, you are invested in them and you want to read more about them.

Faith is great as a mum of a young man, worrying about his career choices and about how he will react to discovering that she has a sex life.

Sara and Will are a couple about to be married. Both have suffered trauma in their pasts, yet are now in a happy, respectful and fun relationship with each other. It's really lovely to see this unfolding on the page. And it's a very much-needed antidote to the disgusting behaviour that comes from other men in the book.

Slaughter has a brilliant way of mixing genuinely gripping plots and mysteries with the ups and downs of her character's lives. It's a great read that you can get lost in - I highly recommend it.

I absolutely love the Sara Linton/Will Trent series and this latest one certainly does not dissappoint. It is most definitely capable of being read as a stand alone but it does help the reader to know more of the back story of the main characters. Action packed, easy to read with plenty of drama and question marks to keep you hooked. I read this in virtually one sitting. A lot of loose ends were tied up at the end of this book but I am hoping that this does not mean that there will not be any more in this brilliant series. A very well deserved 5 stars!

Karin slaughter can do no wrong. Another incredible instalment in the Will Trent series. One of the only author who I’ve read her full back catalogue.
Although the book definitely should come with a trigger warning; I loved understanding more about Sara’s past. Impeccable characters, storyline keeps you gripped. Already can’t wait for the next one!

The first impression in reading this book is a sense of a curate’s egg feel to this latest episode in the Dr Sara Linton series. Ms Slaughter can always be relied upon to put together a well structured plot with a healthy injection of her trademark references to medicine and, especially the importance of medical forensic investigation to modern law enforcement. And in this book she again demonstrates her mastery of the genre. So far so good, but the central theme of this crime thriller relates to a series of violent sexual assaults that are fairly graphically described. It is unfortunate that the author felt the need to use this plot device, as the old adage that ‘less is more’ applies with special salience in crime thrillers relating to sexual violence. There are, perhaps, redeeming features in the way that Ms Slaughter highlights the damage and pain inflicted on survivors of such crimes, but it was hard to shake off a sense of an unnecessary salacious or voyeuristic character in the way the assaults were described.

Honestly, this one of my favourite Karin Slaughter books so far. She manages to write hard hitting storylines with such sensitivity that you enjoy the story but get the message at the same time. The story is helped along with brilliantly written well rounded characters and a thread of perfectly timed humour.

This was a very emotional and terrifying story. It was so real that it felt like the characters were walking off the page. The ingenuity and structure was amazing. It tore me apart but I had to get to the end to find out the final result. Very clever story.

Although Karin Slaughter is a prolific novelist this is the first one of her books that I have read and based on this one example, so I could be wrong here, I would put her in the same stable as Harlan Coben, Lynwood Barclay etc.
This is a novel in a series about Will Trent a GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) agent and Sara Linton an ER doctor, who are both likeable characters with an interesting story. The fact that I haven’t read the preceding, I think 10; novels in the series didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this one at all.
Sara battles to save the life of a battered young woman and as the story unfolds it becomes clear that there is a link to an attack on Sara when she was a medical student. The tale is dark with many twists and entails some alarming facts about rape in the USA and how it is investigated. A somewhat disturbing read but engrossing to the last page.

Karin Slaughter is one of my favourite authors. I have read several books from the Will Trent series but not all of them so feel I’m maybe missing some background details relating to Trent and Sara Linton’s relationship. Having said that, I don’t think it affected my enjoyment of the book. The story deals with the harrowing subject of rape, specifically serial rape. The subject is very close to Sara Linton as she was herself one of the victims.
I always enjoy the authors style of writing and this book didn’t disappoint. Kept me guessing until the end.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

Another fantastic read from Karin Slaughter, you just know when you see the name that it will be a good story. Karin clearly researches the details in her books meticulously and this is another great crime story. Definitely one of my favourite authors - I need to read the full Will Trent series in order. Would definitely recommend if you are a fan of crime fiction.
