Another stellar outing in this series that I’m also enjoying as a tv show
Same enjoyable characters and intrigue that will
Make you run through this book if you are a fan of the series
I love Karin Slaughter books. She always draws me in and tells a good story with quality writing. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
It’s always hard to hear about violence against someone. Reading this book brought on a lot of anger and a lot of tears. After being assaulted it is difficult enough to ask for help. If you have to fight against money and/or prejudice this fight can be too much. There are some trigger warnings the reader has to be made aware of before getting started. I really enjoyed the book, it has a lot of twists and the biggest shocking betrayal has to be when everything is out in the open. Great addition to the series and highly recommend.
Welcome return for Will and Sara investigating an attack that brings some traumatic memories back for Sara, will she find justice?
I’m a great fan of Karin Slaughter going way back and whilst this story was not for me I have to still admire her writing style. She’s always easy to read apart from some of the subject matter which was not what I wanted to read about. However this book lacked something to keep my attention in the way of plot. It just seemed too grim and gritty without any let up. It will obviously be a success as lots of readers enjoy this type of realism but it wasn’t for me this time.
Another exciting read from author Karen Slaughter. I found that this latest episode in the lives of Will Trent and Sara Linton just a little bit tricky to get into. There were too many characters in the first few chapters and I kept having to backtrack to establish who was who. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it once I had settled into it and it continued with the same thrills and surprises that always feature in a book by this author.
My thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the book and share my opinions
I rate this 4.25. This is the first of Karin Slaughter’s book that I’ve come across. To be honest I read the title as Slaughter After That Night due to the format of the front cover.
This book captured my attention from the start as I thought it was thriller, then it developed into a criminal investigation plot. I would say it is a mix of both. The other bit that pulled me is the medical background of the book. I guess like moth to fire I have to read it.
As it is my first time reading her book, I didn’t realise she was American, all the medical terms are American based and lack of an extra alphabet that is present in British English. If not for the medical terms, I probably wouldn’t realise it, as it isn’t as obvious in the later part of the book (or I may have got used to it). I’m sure this is the same with British writing read by American.
There are loads of repetition which is good for me as I now realised that this is the 10th book of Detective Will Trent, it gave me a background to the characters. This could be a little pain for readers who have read her books from the start though.
I love the nod of thanks to Healthcare professional and that we are better than google!
I try not to read the blurb these days to avoid the feeling of deja vu. But perhaps for this book I should have. It is quite harsh to read, it reminds me of the real world issues and internet safety and all.
So content warnings: rape, sexual assault and domestic abuse.
Thanks Karin Slaughter and HarperCollins for the advance review copy of the book via ReadersFirst and NetGalley in exchange of honest feedback.
This series of books just gets better and better. This is my favourite one so far!
There are many twists to the story, and the ending was unexpected!
Another great read from Karin Slaughter.
Karin Slaughter is the undisputed queen of the investigative crime thriller. And for good reason. Her stories snag you from the get go, slamming the door on the rest of your world, gripping you, shocking you, until nothing matters but getting to the end of the ride — in one piece, if possible.
After That Night is everything you’ve come to expect from a Will Trent/Sara Linton story. It’s the 11th instalment in the series, and although I’d always recommend reading them in order, this like the others can be read as a stand-alone.
Front and centre here is Sara, whose critical testimony in a civil trial has brought back harrowing memories of the brutal rape she was subjected to 15 years ago and which left her unable to have children. When she voices her suspicion that the two events might be linked, Will and his partner Faith go rogue to investigate.
As always, Slaughter’s plotting is razor sharp, thrilling in its intensity and jaw-droppingly clever. It’s also incredibly complex, so you have to keep your wits about you. Slaughter’s never afraid to take you to dark places or to introduce some truly vile characters, and here she does both.
For me, though, what really sets Slaughter apart is her slavish attention to detail. Her descriptions of the minutiae are so vivid, you feel like you’re right there, a fly on the wall. Yes, it’s raw, gory, brutal, but this author just doesn’t do subtle. And this is exactly what makes her writing so irresistible.
Equally compelling are her characters; familiar faces we’ve come to know so intimately. Will, Sara and Faith are people we care about, so picking up a new title in this series is like being reunited with old friends. I, for one, hope it won’t be too long before we meet again.
This was a first for me in this well established series and by this author having been recommended thought I'd give it a whirl.
So obviously I didn't connect as well with the characters as there's clearly!y a lot of background (I didn't expect to) but I had a good grasp on the goings on.
I found the book ok. To me it felt a bit predictable and it felt dragged out I was waiting for it to end rather than wishing it wouldn't.
This is the 11th book involving medical examine Sara Linton and GBI investigator Will Trent. I haven't read the past few novels involving these characters as I felt they had become a bit dull, but was keen to try a new one - I was not disappointed, Slaughter is definitely back on track with this story!
When Dani Cooper enters the ER during one of Sara's shifts, the past returns to haunt the medical examiner. Can Sara find justice for Dani, and cope with revelations about her own life?
I really enjoyed the progression in Sara and Will's relationship, and seeing where Will's partner Faith is now. A great addition to the series.
What a fabulous author Karin Slaughter is. Never fails to put together a dynamic, thrilling page turner and this book is no exception. The subject of rape, sexual assault and murder is dark and at times shocking but held my attention throughoutn. The twist at the end left me reeling. A definite must read
I love this author and have read this whole series. Unfortunately I struggled with this one a bit as I felt it dragged on so much and was quite slow at parts. It went into too much unnecessary detail that I struggled with. It picked up again towards the end and I did enjoy it but it could have been quite a bit shorter
The fact that this book had me choosing to stay awake to read instead of sleep (mum of a 1yo here so sleep is generally all I want atm) should, I hope, convince you to read this book.
Read this if you enjoy:

Bringing down the bourgeoisie
There is some sensitive content in here so research the book if you need to.
I became a staunch Karin Slaughter fan after reading the first Will Trent book, Triptych. I love the Will Trent web series too, but I've read only the first two books in the detective series. So watching the web series definitely helped me to fill in the story gaps when I was reading the 11th book in the series. I'd still advice readers to pick the books in the proper sequence. Now I am left wondering what happened between Angie Polaski and Will. I will have to read all the books to find out!
Slaughter's Medical Examiner from Grant County series, Dr. Sara Linton, tries to save Dani Cooper's life as she is admitted in a critical condition grappling between life and death. Dani whispers to Sara that she was abducted and raped. Sara Linton, instinctively knows that the events of the night is going to change her life irrevocably. Three years later Sara testifies as an expert witness in the civil trial of Tommy McAllister against Dani Cooper. Sara is distraught that the trial will bring to limelight the sexual assault she was subjected to fifteen years ago and all the pain and grief she fought so hard to put behind her will resurface. Sara is engaged to Will Trent and the subsequent events lead to Will and Faith investigating Dani Cooper's case without their Chief, Amanda's knowledge. As they investigate, the gruesome and appalling details of a series of crime are discovered.
The book is very disturbing with detail and graphic descriptions of rape scene but it also depicts all that goes wrong when a victim comes forward to raise his/her voice against what they've endured. Slaughter gets it all right from the victim shaming, to careless disregard to any kind of sensitivity towards the victim and the system's lack of tight laws against the perps. Very less authors get it right when dealing with a delicate topic but Slaughter gets the technical and the emotional angles perfectly.
As always Slaughter's writing is gripping and the pace kept me engaged right from the first page to the last. The book made me resolve to read all the other Will Trent books in the correct order. The book proves that you can never go wrong in picking a Karin Slaughter book 👌
Karin Slaughter never fails to deliver a gripping exciting story & this new book is no exception.
Although number eleven in the series it can be read as a stand alone book.
A brilliant price of writing I was hooked from the start & just couldn’t put it down.
Sarah Linton a doctor & medical examiner is drawn into a case with her fiancé detective Will Trent.
While on call in ER Sarah has battled to save a young woman who has been brutally attacked.
It soon becomes clear to Sarah that this attack has clear similarities to when she was brutally attacked & raped 15 years ago.
Is her world about to be turned upside again after finally coming to terms with it & moving on with her life.
As the investigation gains momentum it becomes more apparent there are other victims.
Fast paced with twists you won’t see coming.
There are some really graphic uncomfortable scenes at times, so not an easy read, but you still have that need to read on.
This was quite a complex plot but once you start you won’t be able to put it down.
This was a dark intense gripping read that held me to the very last page.
I really enjoy Karin Slaughter books and was so pleased to get the opportunity to read this book. However, when I realised that it was number 11 in a series, I couldn't help be a little disappointed. I'm usually a huge fan of reading books in order, but I just didn't have time to read the previous 10. Thankfully, I didn't need to worry as I felt that this book worked really well as a standalone novel.
After That Night follows GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton. Sara battles to safe the life of a woman who has been brutally attacked and it becomes clear that this was linked to a violent attack on Sara herself, from 15 years ago. Will and Sara work together to find out what or who could possibly link the two attacks and discover much more than they bargained for.
I haven't met the characters of Will and Sara before, but I really feel as though I want to go back and re-read the previous books. Not because I felt as though I was missing things, but because I enjoyed them so much as characters.
This book was gritty and dark and full of twists and turns. I love how Karin Slaughter writes and she really does write a great thriller.
My only negative was that the chapters were SO long!
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
Will Trent and Sara Linton return. As their wedding approaches Sara Linton is in court testifying against a specialist's son after she has tried to save the victim's life. Sara is conflicted as it brings back memories of her attack 15 years before.
As ever, this is not an easy read - Karin Slaughter is graphic in her descriptions and the story centres on the belittling of women, physically and mentally, by a group of specialist doctors who regard themselves as untouchable and entitled in everything they do. Finally cases against young women are being linked and the police department, with the help of Sara Linton, join forces to bring those responsible to task.
Well written and fast moving.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Karin Slaughter/HarperCollins UK for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
I think this may just be my very first Karin Slaughter book. I've not read the others in this series and I didn't feel like I was out of the loop at all. I actually think it was so well written you couldn't even tell!
This was gripping! I'd have read it in one sitting if I'd started it earlier in the day. The medical references were on point, the tension and the chase was tip-top and the development of the evidence gathering was exciting and the court witness scenes were tense.
I was fully engaged with this plot from start to finish and it was developed so well. The twists were great and I can see why these MC's are back from a series because they are so likeable, you root for them page turn after page turn.
A difficult case for Will Trent and his fiance Sara Linton. A rape victim that Sara deals with has the same signs as her own years earlier. Good novel dealing with a difficult subject. Good characters (good and bad) well plotted and will keep you reading till the end. Will and Sarah's novel just get better with each book.
I received this book free from HarperCollins UK and Netgalley for a review.
