I had a great time reading this book. We meet a little bunny who isn’t looking forward to Easter this year. When their closest friend gets them to give it a try, something unexpected happens. First they grow a huge chocolate egg, and turns out a dragon was inside it. Once the dragon gets loose, it heads to the real world to cause all kinds of mischief. It is up to these two friends to stop them before Easter is ruined. Just when all seems lost, something amazing ends up happening. Kids will have a lot of fun reading this book.

This is a pretty funny tale about a somewhat surly bunny, and his attempts to procure eggs for Easter. I only wish it hadn't been told in rhyme. It's pretty hard to write poetry that trips easily off the tongue.

I did, however, LOVE the eye-popping illustrations.

I suspect some parents may be horrified at the "explanation" of where chocolate eggs come from, but kids will love it. (The fun kids, anyway.)

Definitely not for parents who are squeamish about bodily functions, or those who don't want to have to explain the British meaning of the word "bum" to American children.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! This is a look at the hard work of Easter Bunnies. They have to make those chocolate eggs, but Steve has not made an egg all season. He decides to abandon the recipe and do things his own way. The results are hilarious and so much fun! This book is not religious in nature but keeps the spirit of egg hunts and the Easter bunny alive. The book rhymes and runs in near perfect cadence. It is part tongue twister, and all laughs.

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
Steve has been unable to grow any chocolate eggs, so with the encouragement of his friend Nugget he brews up an egg of his own. Unfortunately, the egg hatches into a dragon that escapes into the real world causing havoc wherever it goes.
The book is written with plenty of egg and bunny puns, but not too over the top. The illustrations are bright and eye-catching. The story is light and fun until the dragon starts pooping chocolate eggs. Because of this being a dragon, it would have made more sense for it to lay eggs or just create them magically. As it is the eggs are shown as being eaten, which causes all kinds of issues with younger readers. Ignoring this small portion, the book is great overall.

This cute picture book tells the story of the easter bunny who is really struggling to get any eggs ready for easter. There is an egg competition and somehow his egg has a dragon in it, who causes havoc in the real world. It's a fun story I think kids might like, but not something I feel super desperate to purchase for my classroom library. I'd recommend this for anyone looking for another cute easter book to add to their child's collection or as a non-candy gift for a child this easter. I would say it is geared towards children in the age 4-8 range. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

A fun story about an Easter Bunny that has to produce chocolate eggs for The Easter Eggs Harvest. He did all he could, but no egg sprouts from his pot. So he did his own experiment. And there goes the fun unthinkable adventure Steve the bunny had. The bright colored illustrations also help us to be in the story with Steve and his friend Nugget.

Love love love! Such an adorable story, that I cannot wait to purchase so I can share with my students. Perfectly timed for spring and very good for social emotional teaching curriculum.

Steve the bunny makes up his own recipe trying to grow chocolate eggs for the Gold Cup competition. To his egg-stonishment a large egg grows overnight. When a dragon hatches and heads to the “Real World” Steve and his friend Nugget follow after him. This is a cute story with rhyming words and colorfully illustrations. The funny or cringe joke is that Trevor the dragon poops chocolate eggs "out his bum". Your reaction to the joke will determine how you feel about the story. Children will probably laugh and find it silly. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, Happy Yak for a temporary ARC. (3.5 Stars)

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This was an adorable rhyming book about a bunny who has really struggled to grow any chocolate eggs for Easter. As a last ditch effort, he throws all sorts of things in his pot, including chilis and spotted socks, in the hopes that he can grow a super special egg and win the golden Easter egg cup. But his egg-speriment gets him a dragon that quickly flies to the real world to eat all the chocolate eggs that were already hidden for the boys and girls.

The illustrations were very fun and colorful, as one would expect from a book about Easter eggs. And the dragon was an unexpected fun addition to an Easter story. I could definitely read this book more than once because it was fun to read. Overall I give it 4.2 out of 5 stars.

It's Easter Eve and bunny Steve hasn't managed to grow a chocolate egg all year. His chicken friend Nugget persuades him to try his own egg recipe. But he gets a surprise when it hatches...

Steve's attempt to grow an egg to win The Golden Egg Cup leads him into a mad Easter Eve adventure as him and, Nugget try to stop a rampaging dragon from spoiling Easter.

The easy to read rhyming text includes eggcellent eggy wordplay and we love Mark Chambers' whimsical illustrations which are full of humorous details.

The Hot Cross Bunny is a fun Easter read which will last much longer than a chocolate egg!

Really quirky and silly! I do think a lot of kids will enjoy it and will have a good laugh with a cute message. The book started off great, but some of the rhymes were forced and awkward in the second half of the book. The illustrations were FANTASTIC. They were incredibly bright and lively, and readers will enjoy that a lot. The story does get a little bit weird with the chocolate poop eggs, so it wouldn't be appropriate to use for a story time at the library I work for, but it will definitely be one I can add to a spring and spring holidays display or recommend through readers advisory for families/readers that like silly books.

A hilarious Easter tale full of silly puns and unexpected magical twists.

Chocolate eggs are grown by magic, a dragon is hatched and the eggs that it lays are re used for an Easter egg hunt! Brilliant. I mean, egg- cellent!

A laugh out loud, silly book about a bunny who gets into misadventures! This picture book is meant for Easter, but is a bit crass and gross at moments. The illustrations are great and the story is engaging. Children will enjoy this zany story.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.

Who would have thought a rabbit called Steve, would bring such joy and make a really great read. With fun, vibrant images alongside an equally fun and vibrant story line, this book is a pleasure to read.
For cross little Steve's journey to grow a chocolate egg is a story that will join our bedtime routine on many occasions!

The Hot Cross Bunny by Carys Bexington 5/5

I love this adorable book. The story line is fun and silly which kept the children's attention. I read this with my two children, age 5 and 7. They loved sitting and listening, the story is engaging and a quick read. The illustration is bright and inviting. I would recommend this story to anyone with children.

This was such a fun and cheeky Easter book to read with my daughter. She really enjoyed the vibrant and colorful pictures while I enjoyed the humor that went over her head. (I mean, who doesn’t love a chicken named Nugget!?) It follows a bunny named Steve who has failed to make chocolate eggs for Easter. He decides to make his own recipe last minute and accidentally hatches an Easter dragon. What follows is Steve and Nugget’s adventure to capture the dragon before he destroys Easter morning. I found this story to be quite original and just quirky enough for kids of all ages to enjoy. This is certainly a favorite in our house.
