Wow Fiona Cummins has done it again with another explosive thriller. The author never disappoints.
Christine Hardwicke is a single mother of two after her husband dying from a degenerative disease several months earlier. Her daughter Galen always wanted to see the dolphins at Chanonry point in Scotland. So, the head off from their Essex home with younger brother Tom. As a surprise Christine has booked them into a Loch that is shown on Galen’s favourite Tv show. The Loch is in a relaxing remote spot and after the long drive Christine can’t wait to get there. Little do they know what they are going to encounter when they get there.
Missy Fox and Daniel Lloyd are on the run leaving bodies in their wake and they are travelling to Scotland. Detective Saul Anguish is leading the team to find the ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ duo before more bodies pile up. But little known to the rest of his team he also has another agenda.
But when Christine and her children and Missy Fox and Daniel Lloyd each world collides. Will Saul Anguish get there before it is too late?
Thank you, Pan Macmillan, for a copy of Fiona Cummins latest offering. This must be one of my favourite books this year. The is a brilliantly fast paced thriller. It has a great tense; plot and it will shock you in places. I love that the author doesn’t hold anything back. It is all or nothing. If you only buy one book this year, I highly recommend this one. 5 stars from me.
I was so excited to start this book and once more be in the wonderful company of DC Saul Anguish and Clover (Blue) March two characters that I really do love and it was amazing !
This book I think is the best one I have read by this author it just had so much to give and whilst being a very gritty thriller it also has a much deeper side and I had tears in my eyes as I was reading the conclusion.
The main theme is a Bonnie and Clyde type couple who go on an indiscriminate killing spree that has no bounds, no one is safe, innocent victims lose their lives and it’s one heck of a gruesome non stop thrill of a journey right to the end
The writing is superb and Fiona Cummins has excelled herself in this latest 5 star thriller, I was sorry when the book ended as I loved everything about it and can’t wait for more from her, she is one of my favourite authors and never fails to have me glued to my kindle , long may the books continue and many thanks.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for giving me this ARC.
Well I was hooked from start to finish. Modern day Bonnie and Clyde - well they thought so!
The tension with Saul and Blue is going strong and they are great characters.
I felt so sad for the main character family - not giving anything away - and I cried at the end!
This was very different from Fiona's other books, but extremely well written with a really good storyline.
Please keep writing I need more from you.
Highly recommended.
All hail queen Fiona, the ultimate ladykiller author and an absolutely phenomenal author. This is a lady who delivers and gets better with every book. I don’t think any written review will do this book justice.
Saul is back and for all of us fans of Mrs C, this is a welcome return. This time he is involved in a darker, shocking and unpredictable situation which will keep you immersed in the pages.
Missy starts off a seemingly normal day, heading to school for a day of teaching littlies and this is where her story begins to unravel. In the chaos of the school environment, there is a jaw dropping situation that unfolds which really begins her spiralling journey.
Meanwhile, the Hardwicke family are off on a trip. This sees them visit grandparents, overcome some difficulties but end up in the face of danger. The family dynamics and difficulties have been portrayed perfectly and the reader is really able to feel for them. They are a very real family, with relatable experiences and issues.
The plot moves seamlessly between the family and Missy. This book will really take us on a trip to the dark side and I have loved every single moment. Despite her actions, I’ve really liked Missy and her actions have not failed to shock me on each event. She’s been fascinating from the very decision to leave her workplace.
This is a masterpiece, it truly is a phenomenal read. I have devoured page after page in just one sitting. However, I have to say that this is because I have been both unwilling and unable to put this down. I have been captivated and caught up on this book. All of Us Are Broken will transport readers and make you feel as though this is on screen playing out in front of you. That’s how brilliant this author is at painting the scenes for her readers.
This is perfectly paced, captivating and addictive. It’s easy to become lost in the pages. I’ve loved every page of this book. I am definitely hoping there are more plans for Saul. There are a few other cases I’d love to see him battle but this one definitely delivered.
It’s no secret, Fiona is my queen. Definitely one of my favourite authors of all time. This latest book is testament to why she is just so amazing. I’ve read all of Fiona’s books and this is a favourite. Would it be too soon to say, I’ve found my book of the year?
No written review or star rating will do this book justice. This is a phenomenal masterpiece and is worthy of all the praise, awards and is most definitely screen worthy.
Anyone who doesn’t get this on the TBR is most definitely missing out.
Wow, this was incredible! Thirteen year old Galen and her family travel to Scotland to see the dolphins, meanwhile DC Saul Anguish is on the tail of a dangerous couple. Will the family trip be cut short?
I felt so many emotions reading this and shed a few tears. I fell in love with Fiona Cummins’ writing when reading Rattle years ago and I can safely say this does not disappoint - I can probably go as far as saying it is one of the best I have read! The author really knows how to set a breathtaking atmosphere and the vivid descriptions make the scenes come to life. The story itself is very dark, well paced and so emotional. Some parts are shocking and you are kept on your toes through out; the suspense never breaking. I love how the characters are developed, you really find yourself getting in to their heads and rooting for some. I especially like DC Saul Anguish, he is such an interesting character. This is an easy 5 stars, one of my favourite books of the year and I can’t wait to tell everyone about it! Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this copy in return for an honest review.
A fantastic read! This is a book you won't want to put down. Some characters are familiar - it's great to be back with Saul and Blue - but even the new ones connect with the reader immediately. There are three strands to the story and it moves quickly between them, leaving you breathless and wondering what will happen. It doesn't shy away from violence and heartbreak, which only adds to the high stakes. It's hard to say much without giving anything away so just take my word for it - buy this book if you love thrillers. A great read guaranteed.
I've read a number of Fiona Cummins' books but that is definitely my favourite. Don't get me wrong, this is a dark read and not for the faint hearted. There are a number of murders (that's not a spoiler!) and a number of complex characters and storylines which will keep you intrigued and conflicted.
DC Saul Anguish is back and on the tail of a modern day Bonnie and Clyde determined to go out in a blaze of glory. We also follow the Hardwicke family, suffering at the hands of a recent bereavement and trying to bring some happiness back into their lives.
When the two meet, prepare yourself for an enthralling story which you will be determined to read in one sitting.
Massive thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A dark and twisted crime thriller. There is a lot of violence, the three person viewpoints left me isolated from the narrative. Although I like the author, the series featuring DC Anguish is disturbing and might not be to everyone's taste.
Another brilliant read from Cummins that I inhaled in one sitting. Deserves all the stars for this complex, twisty thriller. Hope to hear more from DC Saul Anguish.
Another absolute cracking page-turner from Fiona.
Her stories are always dark and brooding with a smattering of violence. She does love to explore the darker side of human nature! While this does have the continuing character of Saul Anguish from previous books, it is easily read as a stand alone.
This is a cat and mouse chase set in a 24 hour period, where a very damaged couple go on a killing spree to ‘go out in style’. Entwined is an innocent family with their own problems caught up in the final scene where the mother has an impossible choice.
Very fast paced, with some clever twists.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
This is the next instalment featuring Detective Saul Anguish, and it was gritty.
Christine and her two children are on the way to Scotland for a much needed break as Christine’s husband is absent and she’s not been on top form. But what Christine doesn’t know is a couple are also heading that way called Missy and Fox. Missy and Fox are determined to become a household name, but for the wrong reasons when innocent people start dying. Saul is on a mission to catch the pair before any more blood is shed.
This was an excellent, tense, pacy thriller that left me speechless. The author wrote a complex storyline and she absolutely nailed it. Full of twists, turns, and dark moments, but it’s a five star read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of All of Us Are Broken, the third novel to feature DC Saul Anguish of the Midtown-on-Sea, Essex Police.
Christine Hardwicke is taking her two children to see wild dolphins in the Scottish Highlands. Anguish is on the trail of Missy and Fox, a couple of young spree killers with a desire for fame. They collide in a hotel in Pitlochry.
I thoroughly enjoyed All of Us Are Broken, which is as much a character study as it is police procedural. The novel opens with Missy asking Christine which of her two children she should kill to save the other. It’s a high impact start and draws the reader in and gets them invested in the outcome. It then goes back 13 hours to show how this dreadful confrontation comes about, hour by hour. This opening is interesting because it leaves little mystery for the reader to detect. The perpetrators are exposed and their motive obvious, so it is obviously a game of cat and mouse and that ratchets up the tension.
The novel is told from three main points of view, Christine, Missy and Saul Anguish. It should be noted that as Missy and Fox are spree killers of a sort, there is a high body count and not all of the violence is glossed over. They are sociopaths with an indifference to death, so their account is chilling. Christine, on the other hand, is a kind woman, full of love for her children and missing the husband, who left, so her dilemma is heartbreaking. Anguish is his usual self, uncommunicative and mission oriented, with his own subplot that requires drastic action.
I wasn’t all that interested in the doings of Missy and Fox, which seems to be murder in the furtherance of their needs. There is a True Romance/Bonnie and Clyde vibe in their doomed love affair, but nothing earth shatteringly new in their behaviour or thinking. Christine and her family are marginally more interesting as there are obviously secrets in the family and I read on to get to them. Saul’s story is the most interesting, not just because I like a procedural, but because he is always unpredictable and has a darkness within.
This is a tense, well written novel with action packed final chapters. The author gradually ratchets up the tension, inserts a few twists I didn’t see coming, unravels the Hardwicke family secrets and crowns it with a blood soaked finale. After all this mayhem she closes the novel with a catch-up on the characters a few months later and that is a sad affair as all of us are broken.
All of Us Are Broken is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
As Christine Hardwicke and her children head north to visit family, little do they realise that they are on a collision course with a couple on a killing spree. Will DC Saul Anguish and Dr Clover March be able to get to them in time and prevent a mother from having to make the most difficult decision ever.
This is going to be an incredibly difficult review to write as I don't want to give away any spoilers at all. There is so much happening in All Of Us Are Broken, layer upon layer of narrative that all build up to a fantastic story, that even the slightest hint could change a readers perception of events.
Right from the very first chapter you know this is going to be a brutal story with cataclysmic results. We are placed right in the middle of mayhem and forced to witness a stark choice.
Before we learn of the decision that is made we cut to Christine Hardwicke and her children Galen and Tom. The family are setting off on the long drive to Scotland to visit family. We slowly learn that things are strained between Christine and her daughter. Fiona Cummins has used very ambiguous language to describe the family situation, even though I'd figured out the basics of what had happened it was still a shock when everything was revealed thanks to the subtle way the story developed.
At the same time as the Harwicke's are setting off a young teacher, through inaction, causes one of her pupils to be badly injured. Rather than face the consequences she walks out of school and makes contact with an ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend is bad news and they bring out the worst in each other. The couple go on the run, their one aim is to become infamous.
From the opening chapter you know the two story-lines are going to converge but it's the way in which we jump from one setting to the next that really builds the tension. As we switch from the quiet and contained family suffering and trying to rebuild their lives to the mindless brutality of lovers on the run from the police. Amid all this is DC Saul Anguish and his darkness, his strange sense of morality.
It's the events that happen when the two story-lines finally meet that are the most shocking. Not just in the violence but in the decisions that have to be made and the bravery shown. I could feel myself holding my breath, dreading how things were turning out, almost wanting to stop time. Even when we reach the conclusion there is still a little bit of mystery to be revealed.
Just like the author, I too fell in love with the beauty of the Scottish Highlands many years ago, and it’s here that ‘All Of Us Are Broken’ is set. However, in complete contrast, the dark storyline is in conflict with its surrounding beauty - but what a cracking read this is!
Single parent Christine Hardwicke, daughter Galen, and son Tom, leave their Essex home bound for Scotland’s Chanonry Point, to grant Galen’s wish to see the wild dolphins. This is a much longed for holiday - the first in a very long time, and a chance to put some sad events of the last couple of years to one side.
However, also headed for the Scottish Highlands are Missy and Fox, a couple on the run from the law, both with severely deep and damaged minds. As the hand of fate declares that the Hardwicke’s journey will cross with Missy and Fox’s, the repercussions will be horrific!
Dark though it was, this was a terrific read, with an interesting protagonist in DC Saul Anguish - brilliant, outspoken, a caring guy - however, when he, his friends or anyone else he cares about is threatened, he doesn’t play nice, you see Saul has a very dark side, but that only makes him even more interesting. ‘All Of Us Are Broken’ is a a grim, gritty and disturbing thriller, with a brutal couple who are intent on a Bonnie and Clyde style killing spree, attempting to outmanoeuvre the police, whilst playing psychological mind games with their terrified victims, but it’s brilliantly written and a real page turner! Highly recommended.
Another gritty thriller from.Fiona Cummins exploring the darker side of humanity. Saul Anguish and Blue are tet again called on to investigate a murder and follow a Bonnie and Clyde style killing spree. Their relationship feels even weirder and strained in this book. There are some sensitive topics such as child sexual abuse and terminal illness dealt with in a very poignant way. By the end of it you'll be an emotional wreck but wanting more! Really superb writing.
The book was like a modern day Bonnie and Clyde - two disillusioned, broken people drawn together by a need for infamy and the need to wreak havoc!
Missy has had a troubled childhood. She tries for some normality with her job as a primary school teacher and her engagement to Gerald that she doesn’t seem to even like! Her previous relationship with Fox ended suddenly but she’s now in huge trouble and doesn’t know what to do so she calls him even through she knows it probably not a good idea.
Saul is a police detective with a penchant for collecting things that he shouldn’t! He is mesmerised by Blue and they click as they are both troubled souls.
Chrissie is struggling without her husband Charlie but tries to remain focussed as she has two children to look after. They set out on a long journey to fulfil one of her daughters bucket list items. It’s a journey that is full of turmoil and emotion.
This book was action packed and full of twists and turns. I really enjoyed it.
Fiona is one of my favorite authors so I was excited to get ahold of a new start to a series. This book did not disappoint and if you are looking for murder and mystery and really loving a characters, as always I recommend her books. I can’t wait for the next in the series m
A gritty thriller with echoes of Bonnie and Clyde. Very well written and graphic in places and it's a race against time thriller but i don't know what happened as it didnt' grab me. I do love Fiona's work though and would still recommend this book if that makes sense as I see a lot of people liking it and appreciating it more than me.
FIVE STARS!!!!!
It made me laugh a little, I cried, I felt sad, it gave me anxiety. An absolute torrent of emotions.
I had to read it oh so fast as I had to see what child she would choose to die.
Wow. This book is just amazing from start to finish and totally gripping. I did not want to stop reading it. Just brilliant.
