Honestly, this book left me broken into a million shattered little pieces, it took me so long to even contemplate writing this review and I can honestly say I don’t think I have the words to do this justice. It was just simply incredible.

From the outset and a prologue that literally dripped with tension as the author placed a ticking clock in the forefront of my mind meaning I was completely invested from page one. And OMG the delectable yet heart stopping hook at the end of the prologue meant that I was compelled to practically inhale this book as I just could not bear to put it down for one minute! It is most definitely not the kind of book that you start reading when you are meant to be getting up and ready for work!

All Of Us Are Broken sees the welcome return of DC Saul Anguish (and I’ll bet there are millions of writers out there with serious character name envy for this!) as he faces a race against time to stop a bloody and brutal killing spree; it gave me major true crime vibes reading this and at times I almost felt as though I was watching the story playing out on the news or listening to it on a true crime podcast.

It is very difficult to review the storyline without giving much away so I’ll leave you to read the blurb for that, but let’s just say it will pluck at all your emotions.

Fiona Cummins is an incredible writer and I think this might be her best book to date, she has created a cast of characters so multi-layered, intense and at times disturbing which means when some of them crawl under your skin you are left clawing at yourself to get rid of them. She really knows how to create characters with a real depth to them, layers and layers to be peeled away, almost as though the plot could be not there you are so invested in the characters’ lives.

The language is both sensual and brutal and she has painted a vivid image of the story playing out in front of you - a visual and evocative read. The novel is exquisitely written and crafted, the language beautiful and the storyline sublime.

A dark, dangerous race against time to stop a killing spree before the body count rises.

This book certainly hits the floor running, the prologue jumps straight into blood and chaos. Several dead bodies and a mother with her two children being held at gunpoint. Not only that but she is faced with a choice, she must decide which of her children is going to be killed.

This book is as dark and twisty as you’ve come to expect from one of her novels, and with this book, ‘All of us are Broken‘ this is her best work to date!

Set over the span of a day, a hell of a lot can happen in a day. As the Hardwicke family, mum Christine, daughter Galen and younger son Tom set out for a special getaway to Chanonry Point in Scotland to see the wild dolphins, which has always been a dream of Galens, they have no idea how their trip is going to end.

It also turns out Galen is a fan of a tv show, ‘The Karma Hotel’ so as a surprise Christine had booked a night in the hotel the series was set in, The Lodge on the Loch. The Lodge is renowned for its remoteness so all Christine wants after the long drive is a glass of wine and a soak in a bath. But fate has other ideas for her.

The family are completely unaware of what has been happening whilst they’ve been travelling. The police are all on hight alert, on the lookout for a couple, Fox and Missy, who are also travelling to Scotland, leaving a trail of dead bodies along the way..

Fox and Missy also find themselves at the same hotel and it’s here that the two very different worlds collide.

This is a very fast paced book that will give you some really scary antagonists to get your teeth into whilst rooting for the Hardwicke family and the slightly damaged Detective Saul Anguish.

If you are new to Fiona Cummins, or even if you’ve read her previous books you are in for a real treat with this book. As I said earlier, this is some of her finest work right here.

All of us are Broken by Fiona Cummins will be published in the UK on the 20 July 2023 and is available to be preordered now from your local bookshop, library or from the link below.

4+

I flew through this, so much so that I had to check the page count, as I'd picked it up and finished it in a few hours.
I was thrilled when Saul showed up again, a fact I'd forgotten. He's an interesting character.
It's dark, as you'd expect from Cummins.
The pace is spot on, and at times the tension was enough yo make me look away.... except for the fact I needed to know what happened next.
Absolute page turner.
