Love and Above is amazing, heartfelt true story! If you’ve ever wondered what a coma is like Sarah Bullen will tell you. Her powerful story of survival, love, loss, resilience and spirituality is inspiring and thought provoking. I don’t want to give anything away here….all that she and her family go through in such a short period of time.
I will say that I sat down to start this book over breakfast and didn’t get up again until I had read the last page. It grabs you and simply does not let go. Bullen’s writing is eloquent and beautifully descriptive. Interspersed throughout her words are thoughts from her husband’s journals and a couple of others very close to her.
The words of her “forest man” stick with me. “Have more fun.” Do I even know how to do that? If not, I need to learn.
Have.More.Fun! I hear you and take this to heart. I will.
Thank you #netgalley for the opportunity to read and review #LoveAndAbove
Love and Above : A journey into shamanism, coma and joy is a heart breaking but also beautiful story of one women's experience of cancer, illness and loss. It explores shamanism and alternative ways of dealing with illness and self exploration and is written with a very honest and open perspective. It will break your heart and uplift you at the same time. Overall a heart warming and memorable read.
Love and Above is a personal and very raw account of how the author, Sarah Bullen, was able to find spiritual meaning and purpose during mutiple traumatic events that emcompassed her family and friends. I was able to empathise with Sarah well as she felt very real to me due to how she was speaking, thinking, and acting - her steps all seemed logical and I felt like I was with her along her journey.
Although I enjoyed the overall premise of the book and was rooting for Sarah the whole way through, I felt that I would have enjoyed it more if it was excecuted a little differently. I found the short sentences really difficult to keep myself engaged and would find that I wasn't able to keep a rhythm or find a flow in the text. It almost felt like the sentences were rushed and blunt; which could be what Sarah was going for by connecting her sentence structure to the idea that our lives are short in the physical plain but we still matter and have purpose; however I found this structure distracting and really struggled to finish the book. I would have liked to have finished this book sooner than I was able to.
I was able to take a lot away from her account and know I will be thinking about her story for a while longer as I am currently on my own spiritual journey.
The author’s journalistic skill shines throughout this well-crafted memoir that is inspiring, thought-provoking, and emotionally wrenching in its candor and transparency. It is not an easy book to read due to the intensity of the life and death experiences described. I felt it well worth the investment of time and energy to explore this remarkable spiritual journey…a personal exploration of a myriad of ancient and New Age modalities that began long before the physical challenges shifted the author’s search into high gear. Yet aside from this, it is above all an affirmation of the resiliency of the human spirit and the power of love…love of self, love of partner, love of family and, above all, love of Life.
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
