Not the only book of this type (Nila's Perfect Coat by Norene Paulson comes very close in subject), this shows a girl striving to get her ideal jacket – and then by misfortune losing it. But does that mean it was all a loss? This is one of those reads that can be too well-intentioned for their own good, and you can say at the end of this that our heroine has had a wonderful fulfilling experience in her loss, or you can look at it that all her hard work and industriousness in raising the coat funds was a right old waste of time. The meaning clearly is that of the former, but cynical adults will find it too easy to say that what is taken from these pages is the latter. Your taste about this depends on how realistic you think the book is and how realistic this and others like it should be allowed to be.
Emily sees a pink jacket in the store’s window. When she finds out how much it is, she knows she doesn’t have any money to cover price. She decides to earn the money. She walks dogs, babysits and sells lemonade. She makes enough money and goes to buy the jacket. She is so happy. When she finds out about the clothing drive, Emily goes with her pink jacket to help. Her mom tells her she doesn’t need to take her jacket as it will be a hot day but she takes it anyway. Why? When she gets home to eat, her mother notices that her jacket is missing. Where is it?

I read this with my 6 year old, we really enjoyed reading this inspiring story about working hard and persevering to get the things you want. The illustrations in this book are bright and full of joy. A heartwarming children's picture book that follows Emily, a spunky little girl who falls in love with a beautiful pink jacket at first sight. Through determination and hard work, she saves up enough money to make the jacket hers. But when she loses it at a school Clothing Drive event, she is heartbroken until she discovers the jacket's whereabouts. This book teaches valuable lessons about working hard, being grateful, and helping others.
I was so glad to find this picture book. My daughter has problems with sharing, and this is a great story to teach what generosity and kindness mean. A pink jacket is always a winner with girls, and we had a great discussion about volunteering, poverty and selflessness.
Thank you, author, for the copy.
This is such a heartwarming story! A little girl works hard to make enough money to get a pick jacket she totally adores. Somehow when she gets it, it gets donated through her school. What happens next will totally make the readers believe in good things about life!
Totally worth the read. The illustrations are amazing too!
