I wasn’t sure if I would like this book, as it’s not a genre I had read before and it’s my first by this author. I was hooked from the first few pages! After an upsetting event in her family, an ordinary teenage girl is swept into an extraordinary adventure with a boy who is unlike any she has ever met. She embarks on a voyage of discovery about herself, her parents, and the world around her. I loved the way the protagonist’s character develops over time, yet still stays true to that of a high school girl. I also really liked her friends and not-so-friends and the way they developed and impacted on her growth. The book is wonderfully written with a beautiful use of language and unusual ideas that made me think about what is unseen but still around us. I highly recommend this book for young adults, but it’s also just as entrancing for those of us who are older.

An interesting story of a girl involved in a mystical being from another spectrum and forging her relationship and understanding of him. Not what I expected, and not my usual read, but not bad. It feels like there was no wrap up.

This book talks about family, friendship, and navigating high school life while being pulled from different directions of life. Also, this touched on the topic of discovering one’s religion. In my opinion, this novel is for readers who are into magical realism.

Frankly, it felt like the book tries to encompass many topics but none fully solidified. It’s like now we are talking about this then jump to another situation. Also, readers were given hints that Darcy, the main character, is trying to figure out how she can do astral projection basically. But, I was left to assume that everything is okay now since that’s where the story is going.

Also, there were moments that felt like the passages are stream of consciousness. And that this is more of a character-driven plot. The story progresses where the main character brings it and there was no concrete plot.

Overall, this novel is okay but it wasn’t just for me. I thought that it would be more like Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer or Invisibility by David Levithan and Andrea Cremer. Honestly, I felt down because I’m giving this book a low rating. This is also the first book I’ve read from the author.
