Description
Sensing she’s about to get bad news, Darcy, sixteen, feels herself—or her spirit, to be more exact—rise weightless, out of her body, lifting off the seat of the patio chair. How can this be happening? Her light-bodied airy self hovers high in a backyard tree.
She is not alone! A beautiful teenage boy, shy as a deer, stands in the branches nearby. He sees her and vanishes—as she is pulled back into her body, again tight-packed in her skin.
Her father is talking. Her parents are separating. She’s stunned—the three of them always seemed special, unbreakable. Yet she’s wildly excited by what just happened—though fears she’s lost her family and her mind in the same afternoon.
While her father is in his own religious crisis, she enters an entrancing spirit realm. Must she live a half-life in each of two worlds or must she make an impossible choice? Can the tree boy Risto ever pass as a regular guy? And what becomes of a young spirit being like him? In My Life On Earth and Elsewhere, Darcy has to find a way around barriers present since before the beginning of time.

Stunning new teenage fantasy through the eyes of sixteen year old Darcy. Despite being a close knit family of three, Darcy is devastated and confusing by her parents arguments and imminent separation. Her life is fragmenting and we feel every heart wrenching emotion with her. Alongside this, her spirit appears to be fragmenting from her body. She feels it slip up and away as she grapples to contain it and her crumbling life and feelings. This momentous moment is witnessed by a shy and beautiful tree spirit boy. A book about family, self, spirituality, connections, beautifully navigated through the eyes of teenage Darcy. A beautiful read for teens and adults alike. #Peggypayne #mylofeonearthandelsewhere #netgalley
I wasn’t sure if I would like this book, as it’s not a genre I had read before and it’s my first by this author. I was hooked from the first few pages! After an upsetting event in her family, an ordinary teenage girl is swept into an extraordinary adventure with a boy who is unlike any she has ever met. She embarks on a voyage of discovery about herself, her parents, and the world around her. I loved the way the protagonist’s character develops over time, yet still stays true to that of a high school girl. I also really liked her friends and not-so-friends and the way they developed and impacted on her growth. The book is wonderfully written with a beautiful use of language and unusual ideas that made me think about what is unseen but still around us. I highly recommend this book for young adults, but it’s also just as entrancing for those of us who are older.
