I’m on the fence about this one so take my review with a grain of salt.
This is an extremely in depth getting to know you (🎶getting to know all about you🎶) journal. Possibly too in depth. I tried to do this for my kids and was having to skip pages and pages bc everyone that would know these answers died a long time ago before I could ask the questions. (Which I get is the point of this book.) I ended up just feeling really crappy.
I guess what I’m saying is this book is amazing if you have your family’s history. If your family is mostly gone, like mine, well it will point out all the things you don’t know.
This book was... just okay. On one hand, it encourages to explore parts of one's family history that maybe weren't spoken about, but on the other the prompts got repetitive after a while. What also irritated me was the gendered aspect of gathering and sharing stories, placed on female members of the family, The book itself addresses mom and its' quite feminine design is also telling.
This is an attractively done and comprehensive volume. The author is described as a qualified genealogist, and so it’s unsurprising that there are chapters and diagrams detailing past generations of the mother’s family. It strikes me that it would be a nice gift book for parent and offspring who are passionate or at least seriously interested in deep-dive family background, especially a mother’s life details.
With great starter subjects and questions this book is a great way to get your mom‘s story or for moms to leave theirs for their children. I think a hard copy of this book or even paperback would be a great gift for Mother’s Day birthdays and even Christmas I wish I would’ve had this around when my grandmother was still alive but I will definitely not let this opportunity pass without putting one of these books in my family. This is a great idea and I only hope they come out with the fathers version soon. I received this book from Net Galley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
This book reminds me of a questionnaire you would complete in school for a project or essay, or when making a family tree. Questions including your great-great-grandparents, emigration, previous spouses, hobbies, etc.
Would be a good tool if you are wanting to chronicle your mother's life in a quick and easy format. I also enjoyed the light colours and delicate illustrations.
Mom Share Your Life Story book is way more detailed then I had expected it to be. That is a good thing. There were questions I would never even think to ask my own mother.
Understandably like most things you tend to forget over time so there were questions that would ultimately be left blank but other people may very well remember those that someone like myself forgets so it is great that there are so many questions.
I can tell a lot of thought has went into this journal and it will make a great keepsake for later in life for not just tour child(or children) but theirs as well and so on.
The idea of gathering the information that this journal sets out is GREAT, to get families to share information about previous generations. The modern version of the traditional story telling around the fire.
Unfortunately, the market is more or less swamped already with this type of notebooks and it feels like this is another author jumping on the band wagon of low volume content, albeit a bit later than many.
I do note that Romano highlights that she's a qualified genealogist through the Society of Australian Genealogists and a former President and Vice President of the Genealogical Society of Queensland, but I don't see any direct difference in her questions compared to the ones available in other journals.
The success of this book will depend more on the buyer's (or receiver's, if it's a gift) diligence in doing sometimes rather substantial research before answering the questions.
P.S. I received an electronic advance reader copy of this book, but this book does NOT work in electronic format and hence I have based my scoring on the book being available as PRINTED version. Still, 2 stars from me.
I was immediately attracted to the book title for this one, and pleasantly surprised with the product. It’s a thick book with tons and tons of great questions to ask and fill out and I really enjoyed reading through it and seeing all the questions and prompts.
The book itself is formatted in a workbook style allowing readers / users to answer questions on the page itself and it’s handy to have all the information stored in one place. It covers absolutely everything in life - from family history, growing up, falling in love, medical questions, growing older, letters to loved ones, advice and of course a family tree section.
As a newer mom of a one year old, I found myself already itching to fill it out for my own kiddo!
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the arc to read and provide my voluntary review.
Do you ever wish that you knew more about your mom? Wish that there was an easy way to preserve some of her stories? If so, this book is a perfect way to achieve your goal.
This book consists of a series of prompts. There are twelve chapters and topics. Just a few of these include Your Family Tree, Falling in Love and, Facing Adversity. What follows in each is a series of short answer questions. For example, “Did you visit your grandparents as a child, and what things would you do while there?” Another, “What were your family’s favorite festive and/or religious celebrations?” And one more, “What is your life motto?” Of course, there are many additional topics in the book.
This journal would make a lovely family keepsake. I think that parents will want to answer the questions as they will enjoy knowing that their child(ren) are interested in who they are.
Many thanks to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this title. All opinions are my own.
This is a important book/journal everyone one should have and write in. My mother died way to young and as I get older I wish I had answer to a lot of questions I have about our family history and health issues . If we would have had this journal I would have been able to reference it now to answer some of the question I have today. Do yourself a favor and get this. I will be filling this out and handing it down to my children. Thank you netgalley
