THE NIGHT HUNT is a dark fantasy of vicious monsters, sharp curses, and cruel gods.
The world is one that both feels a little familiar but still feels wholly its own. I think this is the combination of know elements - like vampires, banshees, and, a godly realm surrounded by rivers of different properties not unlike the Greek underworld - contrasted against new ones - such as the role of heralds as basically divine deputies and Atia's monsterness.
It is a very nice balance as there is a comfort to the world that settles you into it alongside a sense that this is something other. I particularly liked that Christo leant into the darker side of the monsters, making Atia visually other when using them to show just how inhuman those powers were.
This is also a story of found family as Atia finds herself effectively questing with people she would not have usually picked. There's the Herald who cursed her, a nerdy scholar she can't persuade to stay safe, and a half-banshee she rescued. I really liked seeing those friendships develop across the book, turning them into a family rather than an oddball collection thrown together by circumstance. Tristan was, of course my favourite - he is a scholar eager for field experience, even if it's deadly.
There are various twists and reveals and betrayals across the book, which keeps the pace up and the reader uncertain who to trust. It made for a very fun tale overall.
A massive thanks to the ever fabulous team @hotkeybooks for the approval because Alexandra Christo has once again proven what a master of the craft she is. I was utterly swept away on this incredible world of gods and monsters. Aria is the last of the Nefas, she feeds on fear and can spin incredible illusions, but she wants nothing more than to kill the gods responsible for slaughtering her parents. Silas is a herald, an escort who guides the dead to the never(hell) or the after (heaven), he remembers nothing of his human life and is determined to remember who he was and what heinous thing he did that sentenced him to 100 years of service to the gods as a an empty, memoryless husk.
They make an unlikely partnership but when Atia is cursed by the gods they come together to take on the gods and get the answers and redemption they need.
The world is lush and well built with such vivid locations that linger long after you've finished the book. Both Atia and Silas are engaging wonderful characters but Alexandra is so good I became just as obsessed with the incredible Cillian and Tristan, the half-banshee and the scholarly best friend of Atia who get dragged or willing against all advice insert themselves into the adventure respectively. I loved the bonds that built between all four of them as secrets are revealed and twists turn. The Oracle, This is also an amazing side character who lives large in the imagination.
The Night Hunt is a joyful romp with tender, gorgeous moments both romantic and platonic along the way and although it won't be out for #UKYASpotlight in September this is one you should definitely check out in October!
I want to start of by saying that the description makes it seem like this would be the enemies to lovers trope, but it was more like reluctant allies.
This was solid quest stort but not great. Since this is a YA I was aware that the romance was going to be side plot but it was still lacking. There wasn't really development between the characters, they just silently swooned for the other and then kissed.
Atia goes from being a terrible monster to caring for a human and a half human in what feels like seconds. Glad she found friends but ???
At first the quest seemed to easy but that changes after the first third of the book, so the quest part was actually good.
This was a solid YA book.
I always like books inspired by Greek mythology, so I liked the setting although it could've been more atmospheric. I feel like To Kill a Kingdom did a better job there, I also enjoyed the romance there a little better. It felt like Silas and Atias relationship didn't really have time to build or develop, so it ended up a little rushed and unsatisfying.
The quest part about the book is great though and if you enjoy plot heavy books this might be up your ally. The first part of it, to kill a vampire was a little to easily resolved, but the author was aware of that flaw and the other parts were harder for the characters. I loved the grand battle and thought the ending was great.
I really enjoyed The Night Hunt!
Atia and her team are really amusing, with funny anecdotes and compliment each other well throughout. Atia and Silas' relationship is really enjoyable too.
I enjoyed the overall storyline with hunting multiple creatures, I found this really interesting and the book didn't lack action.
Overall I really enjoyed this and would say this is probably my favourite Christo book to date. Highly recommend.
I really enjoyed The Night Hunt!
This was the second book I've read by Alexandra Christo and definitely my favourite of the two.
The story was so much fun and I was instantly hooked!
The main characters were great and well fleshed out.
I definitely highly recommend this book!
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
*chefs kiss* perfection
Alexandra Christo has done it again! Another fantastic book that I was able to devour and cherish.
Absolutely loved this story and the plot. Got instantly sucked into it and I cannot fault it whatsoever, I was addicted!
The characters were amazing, the main four of the story were intriguing and a fantastic group of unlikely friends!
Can't wait to see what Alexandra Christo does next!
The Night Hunt by Alexandra Christo is a stand alone YA fantasy novel that’s told in dual povs. Mostly influenced by Greek mythology, overall, it was a fun and fast read. There were a lot of good things about this book. The characters were well thought out and the banter among them was well written. The plot had it’s intrigue and suspense.
A very well written story, great world building, well described characters & engaging plot. I love a good paranormal romance with a HEA.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
I loved To Kill a Kingdom but I think I might be a bit outside the target audience for this one. YA is very hit and miss for me these days. That said, this was a solid, easy to read story and I loved the mythological aspects. I had a bit of a disconnect with the characters but I suspect that’s a target audience thing with me. Still worth a read if you enjoyed the author’s previous books.
