The book is lovely and encourages the reader to adopt an unconventional dog. BUT. NO shelter would allow one of their charges to have fleas!
The illustrations Iridian Pacheco are to be delightful, imaginative, colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from the author via NetGalley. Thank you!
I wouldn't normally request a picture book from NetGalley, since I am not a childhood educator, parent or grandparent, but when I saw the charming Who Will Adopt This Pet by Melanie Middien I could not resist. This is a charming book, with fun illustrations and a rhyming scheme that I could imagine reading with and to a child who was too young to read. It has the underlying message that a pet doesn't have to be perfect to be perfect for you, overlaid with really fun illustrations and text. I would loved to have had this in my hands as a paper, rather than e-book.
This story takes young readers on a touching journey of compassion and acceptance. A boy and a girl visit a pet shelter in search of their ideal pet but come across a scruffy, unloved dog with peculiar traits – toothless, farty, yappy, and three-legged. Instead of turning away, they embark on a mission to find a loving home for their newfound furry friend. The story beautifully portrays the importance of kindness and empathy, showing children the value of embracing differences and seeing the beauty in every living being. With delightful illustrations and a touching narrative, this book is a must-read for young readers, leaving them with a heartwarming message about love, friendship, and the power of second chances.
As soon as I opened the book, I was hooked by the boy and girl's quest to find a new pet, which leads them to a scruffy, three-legged dog with some funny quirks. The story is not just about finding a home for a furry friend but also about discovering the true meaning of compassion and acceptance. It's a captivating tale that teaches children the importance of embracing differences and seeing the beauty in all living creatures, no matter their appearance. The charming illustrations and heartwarming narrative make this children's book an absolute gem that every young reader should experience.
I enjoyed this story with all if the characters within. The main characters were a boy, a girl and the dog.
The boy and girl are at a shelter for animals. They see a dog with three legs and decides to find him a home. They take the dog around town asking if they would like to adopt it. But no one wants him because of different reasonings. So at the end of the day they take him back to the shelter. The boy and girl are sad.
This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure and drama throughout. It had a few giggles within. The illustrations went along quite good with the story. The illustrations were also very colorful.
I received a complimentary copy via Booksprout. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
Thank you for the advanced reader copy of this book. All reviews are of my own opinion based on the ARC copy.
What a cute story about a shelter dog trying to find a home. The drawings and expressions were well done and gave empathy to the dog.
It does make me a little sad they would assume a dog wouldn’t be an option because of the way it looks or smells. As the book goes to show that it was the perfect pet though.
Some of our favorite dogs are overweight, stinky shelter dogs and I hope it encourages other people to feel the same.
Oh my goodness what a great message to send. The book was similar in vein to the wonky donkey and I loved it. I can’t wait to read this to my own kiddo and want to recommend it to our local animal rescue. Animals are so pure and I love that this book urges you to look past the face value.
"Who Will Adopt This Pet" is a sad but all too real book. It is about a shelter dog and two kids go to everyone they see on the street and try their best to get someone to adopt him. He is stinky, has fleas, has a silly bark and is missing teeth, and nobody wants him. They bring him back to the shelter at the end of the day and the worker brings out a perfect poodle that smells good, can play piano and has shiny teeth. They want to adopt that one until they hear a little yip and turn to the 'rough-looking' dog. The two kids realized that they couldn't leave him and that they were going to adopt him even if he wasn't the most perfect thing.

I was very fond of this funny-wunny, sorta-silly story about a little shelter dog. The illustrations were bright and colorful and would certainly engage young readers. Pages repeat themselves in a delightful way, adding more silly names for the doggie as they go. It was a fast, fun and cute story about children trying to do good in the world for shelter dogs. We need more stories that address the change children can make in the world when they have motivation and support from the adults around them. The only criticism I have for the book is I found the white text with a dark outline around it a bit difficult to read. This really is just a minor issue though and would not stop me from reading the book again, nor from recommending it to others.
Good job!
Who Will Adopt This Pet? by Melanie Middien - 4/5
Children's Fiction - Parenting & Families
Who Will Adopt This Pet? is such a heartwarming read. We follow two children on a mission to help get an unloved dog adopted and it just hits you in the heart at how kind they were to do this. This was an easy read, we enjoyed the Authors writing style, the rhyming helps my children follow along easier. The illustrations are fun, and I loved all the facial expressions. The only thing that stood out to me was the illustration of the dog, throughout the story on his left side he has a brown ear and missing leg, but on page 21 he has a leg on his left side.
Thank you NetGalley and Annan Moss for the eARC.
Thank you NetGalley for this Arc!
I loved this book so much. It’s a sweet story about adopting pets from a shelter. It made me think of the wonderful dogs, my family has adopted over the years. It made me tear up a little. I would definitely purchase this book for the kids in my life.
Super cute and funny kids book! We have 8 silly dogs at our home so this was fun to read! I will point out through the book the pip is missing the leg on his left side under the dark colored ear. In the last picture he has that leg and his missing the other. Just a little inconsistent there.
Thanks to netgalley and BookBuzz for the ARC.
