This one unfortunately didn't do it for me. I know that the intention was to "prove others wrong" about Pancake's appearance and how anyone can be a hero and it doesn't matter how you look. However, instead of honoring all bodies it was more about how DESPITE Pancake's appearance he could still be a hero; this left a sour taste for me. I found Pancake endearing but I also felt bad for him and how others treated him. I'm torn because I did like the messaging that any of us can be a real-life hero but this didn't quite do it for me.
Pancake the Cat: From Funny to Fearless by James Coleman with cute art by Lucy Pirogova is a lovely and easy-to-read story filled with humour and kindness. The book features great messages about acceptance, change, and inner strength.
Fluffy and adorable cat Pancake lives with his kind owners Mr. and Mrs. Buttons. His humans spoil Pancake with delicious pancakes for every meal. Soon, he begins to resemble his favourite food! He quickly finds out that he can’t do the physical things that other cats can and his friends continuously make fun of him. Poor Pancake is devastated. However, a chance meeting with a starving mother cat and her kittens allows Pancake to become the true hero that we’ve always known he is!
This is such a sweet and meaningful book! I love the humour and puns. I love cute and relatable Pancake who is good, kind, and always willing to help others. I really admire how Coleman manages to gently and effectively represent many messages in this quick and approachable tale without being preachy. Through Pancake’s journey, both kids and adults can learn about the values of courage, kindness, and a good heart.
There’s also the important lesson that one’s appearance doesn’t impact one’s goodness. Pancake helps the starving cats in a sweet way which is so uniquely him and stays true to himself. This can help to encourage self-love and self-acceptance in kids. However, I also like that the book ends with Pancake choosing to work on himself by improving his diet while still making room for his beloved pancakes. I think this is also an important message that it is perfectly okay to change yourself if you want to!
I really love Lucy Pirogova’s homey and whimsical art. Pancake is so cute with his fluffy body and sweet blue eyes. I also really like all the different cats who have such unique personalities and figures. The typography is also super cool. It is fun and exciting while nicely fitting the story and matching the changing moods.
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞 out of 5 stacks of pancakes!
This was the cutest book about an unusual cat who helps out others in the only way he knows how. Definite recommend!
Princess Fuzzypants here: Whimsical and poignant, this book tells the story of a kitty who eats so many pancakes that he looks like a pancake. He is teased even by his so-called friends and finds he not only cannot do the simple physical things the other cats do, he often gets into some very embarrassing situations. His spirit is crushed because all he wants is to be a hero.
Pancake Cat is challenged by a dangerous situation and without thinking of his own well being, he shows how brave he truly is. His self respect is restored and he learns the lesson that what is on the outside is less important than what is on the inside. I think this book would give any child who does not quite fit the norm hope and courage.
Five purrs and two paws up.
Odd book. The cat itself was funny but the wording and the inside jokes were much to advanced for my toddlers. Maybe a good book for adults but not for children.
This is a charming children's book about a cat named Pancake. Poor Pancake likes pancakes way too much and begins to gain weight. This causes problems for him. In spite of this Pancake becomes a hero. This book teaches children to stay true to themselves and never give up. The illustrations are lovely and add to the story.

"Pancake the Cat" by James Coleman is a delightful children's storybook that follows the charming adventures of Pancake, a cat with a penchant for pancakes. What sets this book apart is its skillful approach to addressing the topic of healthy eating in a gentle and engaging manner. As a vet nurse, I found this aspect particularly commendable, as it introduces young readers to the importance of making nutritious choices. The heartwarming tale, coupled with its valuable lesson, makes "Pancake the Cat" a must-read for both kids and parents alike.
I read this book with my daughter Izzy. Izzy loved this sweet story about the cat named Pancake. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is well written with a nice message. Izzy liked the ending most of all since Pancake makes friends and becomes the hero. Izzy gives this story 5 stars since it has a great message that you don’t have to be purr-fect to be a hero.
Sweet story kids will enjoy! Might make a fine gift for little cat lovers. I enjoyed the illustrations. I think the humor will appeal to littles. I hope Mr. Coleman will write more adventures about Pancake the Cat.
One of the cutest children's books I've read in a long time. Beautifully illustrated, this follows an adorable cat named Pancake - who loves Pancakes. I found myself cheering along for Pancake, somehow very invested in their journey to self love.
This is adorable! What a lovely storybook for children to enjoy! The story is heartwarming, with a really good message about what it means to be a hero. The illustrations are beautiful throughout, there’s some good humour, and it is well written. This would make a lovely addition to anyone’s storybook collection. Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to the publisher, and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review.
My 4 and 7 year old kids and I loved this book. It’s a little strange but also funny and cute. It has a great message and bonus there are lots of pancakes. Also we loved the illustrations. We definitely recommend it.
This story was so cute! I liked the story of Pancake eating pancakes. The puns were very fun and a good talking point with my daughter. the illustrations were cute and we would definitely read this story again!
This is a delightful story about Pancake the Cat, and how his unrelieved diet of pancakes with various toppings everyday results in him being viewed somewhat affectionately as a figure of fun.
Once Pancake decides that he wants to be taken more seriously, and tries to implement some lifestyle changes, that doesn't work out quite as he'd planned. So he ends up feeling sad that he cannot do with the other cats can, and fears that people will always consider him to be simply a funny cat who's a source of amusement.
But then Pancake unexpectedly does something heroic by rescuing a mother cat and her little kittens, who are starving, by bringing them home and making them pancakes!
As a result, he successfully makes the point that being a hero is not simply about how you look - it's about what you do.
This is a touching story, with cute illustrations, and Pancake's plight will be relatable to many. By ending on a note where Pancake also reforms his eating habits, the book can offer some important lessons to young readers.
This book was very well written! I read it with my son! As a parent I thought it had a great message! My son and I loved the puns! He thought it was funny! We were actually talking about puns earlier so when we read this book he noticed them right away! This would be a good book to have students or your own children point out the few Puns it has!
