I had the audiobook of this and whilst I normally get this kind of book as a physical, I actually thought with having the exercises to follow it would be easier to follow by ear. This was indeed true. I just found that it’s not something I would go back to after listening once and that quite a lot of it can be found elsewhere.
Soothe is the perfect pick up and put down book that speaks to your soul, looking at different facets of the nervous system and how we create a good foundation for day to day living.
While I think the book has a lot of useful things to say, I personally found it difficult to engage with and I couldn't really connect with what was being said. I experienced this as an audiobook and I wonder if for me personally I would have got more from it as a written book. The narrator's voice is, appropriately, quite soothing!
This was a great book, I found the narrator very annoying as she was doing her thing.
The book itself is very well researched and the author is a very clever lady. A lot more people should read this book!
This high quality audio book keeps it real by relating it to real life examples. There is a lot of information to be digested and lots of practical exercises. It was lovely to listen to but was a tad long for me and a bit repetitive.
Perfect for anyone who want to try something new, find out you are not alone and like the idea of trying mindfulness to a degree.
Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator
I have read a few books in this area of non-fiction recently and while I think it does have a lot to offer, I didn't get anything from it that I didn't already know so I haven't reviewed it publically. It is an interesting book and worth picking up.
Soothe - Nahid de Belgeonne
A very enjoyable listen, I personally listened to this on my morning walks and got to put some of the practices into place while doing these walks. I feel this book is very important in these fast paced over stimulating times. A really good insight into how the nervous system works. Thanks so much Netgalley, Profile Books Audio and Souvenir Audio for the audiobook in return for my honest thoughts and opinions
I listen to calming / sleep inducing podcasts and apps every night & I’d hoped this would be the same. It wasn’t.
That was my fault of course. I didn’t read the blurb before requesting the audiobook.
I was disappointed one midnight when I went to play it, and then forgot about it.
A few days ago, I hit play while I worked, not knowing what to expect.
I found myself nodding along with Nahid’s opening chapter and sympathising with her experiences.
When she moved on to the soothe program, I tried to listen but couldn’t really follow or understand a lot of her words.
I’m a visual learner though so I think this was a ‘me problem’ rather than the audiobook itself. I’ve given it 3/5 as the concept was interesting but I couldn’t follow well enough to put it into practice.
I really needed this audiobook! Fabulous! Our increasingly frantic lifestyles make it difficult to slow down and listen to what our bodies are telling us, paying attention only when they are broken. Soothe brings you back to balance, explaining the workings of your nervous system and helping you restore calm by physically releasing held stresses. Somatic practitioner Nahid de Belgeonne will teach you how to:
- Cultivate interoception, the crucial body sensing ability
- Breathe to maximise your oxygen intake for improved body function
- Understand and use the healing power of touch
- Combine rest and action using your circadian and ultradian rhythms
- Nourish your nervous system with food and nature
- Deeply connect with yourself, others and the ground beneath your feet
A freeing and revolutionary approach to bodily tranquility, Soothe will completely change the way you breathe, move and care for your overworked nervous system.
A nice introduction to methods to soothe and relax the nervous system. Enjoyed listening on my commute, and got to practice some of the exercises on the way home. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance audio version to review.
A nice clear guide to soothing the nervous system. Would have liked some more case studies linked to the exercise. Probably works better as a book than audio
This is a really good starting point to understand how to soothe yourself, clear steps and advice. I liked how accessible this was, however it would have been very helpful to have a pdf of images to support the audiobook as I assume these would be in the paperback or ebook

Nahid de Belgeonne was not someone I had heard of but I'm glad I have now!
I found this book fascinating full of easy to follow scientific facts, case studies and exercises on how our nervous system works and how to regulate and soothe it. Well worth a listen, I have the book on preorder so I can reread and reference it in future.
A book about how the nervous system works, the importance of taking care of it in a busy, constantly stimulating world, and how self regulation can benefit your overall health. The author covers issues like the importance of rest, movement, self massage, and breathwork, and includes tips and exercises that will soothe your nervous system and improve wellbeing.
It became a little dry for me during the science-heavy parts - I’m not sure I really needed to know all the bones of the inner ear or how the lens of your eye moves - but overall contained some useful information and practical exercises. Ultimately, we could all do with being more aware of our physical bodies.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. It was packed filled with information and really good exercises to try. I have put the paperback on my wish list.
Soothe by Nahid de Belgeonne is an interesting introduction to somatic exercises, and had some really good descriptions about how our nervous system works. I wasn't very keen on the case studies, they didn't really work for me.
I loved this audiobook so much. Nahid de Belgeonne goes through how our nervous system works and how to regulate it. I found it so useful and found myself re-listening to the exercises to get myself into the practice of doing them. The case studies felt like a bit much towards the end but also felt reassuring that I wasn't feeling crazy and everyone deals with stress and anxiety in their day to day life. Found this really useful and can't wait to get into more of her content!
'Soothe' is THE audiobook we need to be listening to right now - our bodies will thank us for it!! This author is an expert in calming the central nervous system, and in this book she shares strategies we can all use to counteract some of our troublesome practices of the modern age to help us connect with our bodies to optimise are heath, sleep, productivity and more!
In this book she shares anecdotes from her client work, and her own experience in addition to providing specific exercises to make the book both relatable and practical.
The content is extensive and as such I have only touched the surface in this review. I am so pleased this book has been written and can't recommend it highly enough.
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
Narrated by the author, this book is a good introduction to the workings of our nervous system and how to regulate it. There are some good tips with clear explanations. The case studies were a bit pointless as they seemed to run to the pattern of “this person had this problem in their life and I made them feel better” without much detail. Overall, an interesting look at therapeutic somatic work.

I hadn't heard of Nahid de Belgeonne but I sure do now!
I really enjoyed this book, and feel like I got a lot from it. It was so in depth, but I never felt overwhelmed with the amount of info. Belgeonne does an excellent job of making the scientific detailed information accessible.
