Sam Coffman
We don’t know what lies ahead so we prepare for emergencies by purchasing insurance. While I believe insurance is important it will not feed us. It is up to each family to be prepared. Our household keeps at least a 3-month supply of food in the pantry but what will we do after 3 months? Author Sam Coffman has the solution. We must learn to grow our food and to preserve it. He discusses the need to look at crops that are healthy and provide the most nutrients. We also need crops that have a high yield. The crops we raise must have seed we can save for the next year…that means using heirloom seeds. The crops we raise need to be space saving. We may not have access to store bought foods. There is so much more to learn from this Sam Coffman in his book Survival Gardening.

Although Survival Gardening would make a fine addition to any library gardening or sustainable living collection, it seems ideal for the smaller library where every book needs to do double duty. Coffman manages to pack a huge amount of information into a small and accessible space, in many ways mirroring the small scale/sustainable yield techniques discussed on the page.

Leading the reader from the extremely basic first steps of growing food crops through to much more sophisticated techniques of land management with a reassuring tone and excellent photographs, Survival Gardening will engage those who are just starting out as well as those who have been exploring off grid sustainability for years. A perfect companion book for readers of Mother Earth News or MaryJane's Farm, and an excellent addition to any library collection! Thank you to NetGalley for access to this informative arc.

Absolute superb survival gardening guide - but with such a dire economical situation at the moment, this book is more important than ever. Not for apocalyptic survival, but simple a means to enjoy nutritious food, while keeping costs down. There are illustrations, guides and so much information to gardening. One of the best gardening books I have encountered.

This is an extremely handy little guide for how to grow your own food in a survival situation. Coffman gives great tips on how, what and where to plant seeds. He has clear instructions, as well as photos of each process. This is a good book to have!

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for an eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

I want to preface my review by sharing that I'm not a prepper, but I do like to grow a lot of my own food. I found this book to be really informative and helpful. The photos included in instructions clearly illustrated the point and I thought the descriptions were accessible, even for folks who may not already garden very much. I really appreciated the emphasis on how long things take to grow, because I think even for someone who isn't responding in a crisis, this gives new gardeners really good expectations for what timing will be like.

I definitely think this is a book I'd like to have on hand, and it would be most helpful as a physical copy!

Survival Gardening does what it promises; teaches you and prepares you for (survival) gardening.
The keeping of rabbits or parts of the foraging do not personally appeal to me, and I certainly know little about gardening, foraging and farming, though I found this book to be a useful, engaging and easy-to-follow book to improve my gardening skills and keep as a reference.
