A beautiful look back in one of my favourite japanese arts, the haiku.

Simple yet captivating design with both the original and the translated versions of each individual haiku, plus a history foreword that will teach everyone a little bit more about the beauty of these poems.

Haiku is a collection of short collection of Haiku Japanese poems translated by Hart Larrabee. The book starts out with an introduction explaining what Japanese Haiku poetry is along with information on the historical background of Haiku before leading on to the poems themselves. The poems are written in their original Japanese and phonetic transcription before being translated into English, which was set out in an effective and calming way. The poems included are classic poems by the four great masters of Japanese haiku – Matsuo Basho, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa, and Masaoka Shiki. I really enjoyed this collection and will be checking more of this poetry style out as I found it beautiful and interesting.

On one occasion I had the chance to go to a Haiku workshop and it seemed like an incredible way to take our thoughts about nature and turn them into a small but at the same time very meaningful poem. Or Haiku.

I think it's an art, it's not easy to do. From that moment on, whenever I have the chance to look around me, and focus on the little things in life, in nature, I imagine myself making a haiku. Many times it does not coincide with what a haiku really is. But I'm not looking to publish it, or write it on paper, I simply try to think about it and do it as best as possible.

This wonderful little Haiku book helped me reconnect with that Magui.

The verse is classical and sublime - the words of these long-gone poets continue to touch us across time.

From a compilation perspective, I was expecting some commentary / context on the verses - hence, I do not think this text brought anything new to what's already out there.

What sets apart this selection of Haiku from 4 Japanese masters of the form is the layout. There's the original Japanese written vertically (as it would have been) which includes the furigana for those learning Japanese, there's a transliteration of the Japanese and there's a translation into English. To set the context there's a 2 page introduction. A beautifully produced volume.

This was a beautifully collected book of Haiku that many will appreciate. Each is unique in it's own way presented in english and original text. With explanations at the beginning it gives a deeper understanding of how they are written and where they originate from.

This is a genuinely beautiful book full of haiku in Japanese and translated to English ranging from nature and emotional poetry with a few amusing lighthearted ones for good measure.

These are ancient poems that can be rediscovered by a new audience.

Why did I choose this one?
I have recently played Ghost of Tsushima and discovered haikus. Really enjoyed the format and themes, and wanted a little more. This book became available at the perfect time, so I simply had to request it.

Pick-up-able? Put-down-able?
Devourable. I consumed this in a single sitting. I could not stop myself. Completely entranced.

What was the vibe and mood?
Overall nature vibes. Switches effortlessly between summer and winter a lot. There are noises from nature, imagery, and the feeling of being outside. Very serene and peaceful.

Final ranking and star rating?
5 stars, S tier. This does exactly what it sets out to do. Show off some haikus from major haiku writers, touch upon the history of haikus, and wraps this up in a neat little book. I think this would be the perfect gift for a poetry and haiku lover in someone's life. I personally will buy a "trophy copy" later to keep on my coffee table.

What you might expect – an anthology of four of the major Japanese haiku writers, including Basho, with the text in Japanese, English, and Japanese-in-the-western-alphabet. You get a brief introduction to the form and the men behind these verses, after which you're on your own, seeing the changing creatures on the temple bell, hearing the frogs, cicadas, jumping fish, trains and more, and experiencing these little snapshots of passing time, nature and so on. All told, this is something sure to make for a good little gift for a poetry lover, and with the translations avoiding the specifics of the form's syllable count, anyone can witness the effect of snort snippets of well-chosen text. A strong four stars.

This is a short collection of traditional Japanese haiku by the classic trio of Basho, Buson, and Issa, with a few from a poet new to me, Shiki. Many of these are familiar and the translations are generally solid, but not transcendent. The verse are of course, classic. My sense is that this is meant to be an aesthetic volume with traditional binding and side-by-side original with translation. It is difficult to appreciate the aesthetics on an e-book so one is left with only the poetry. That is fine, but I did not find anything really new or revealing in this book edition.

A very nice and representative collection of haiku from four of the greats. I was happy to see that the Japanese was also included so that students of Japanese can make some kind of a connection. For serious students of Japanese haiku it would be interesting to compare these translations with other translations to see just how the author made different connections with the words and analyze how literal/creative/traditional these translations are. For non-Japanese readers, it is a very approachable collection.

For those who may not know, haiku poetry consists of seventeen syllables. While this may seem short, so very much can be expressed in this form.

This title includes works by four masters of haiku. Read about each of them before going to the poems. The overall introduction is also informative.

The included poems are often gorgeous and thought provoking. I love that each page includes calligraphy and a transliteration of the Japanese as well as the English translation.

In my opinion each work is a jewel and meant to be savored. Read slowly and take in the experience in this lovely book.

I'm so glad that I read this one!

First of all, the Haiku were all really stunning and I'm surprised to see how I liked at least one from all the authors that were showcasted. Yes, we don't only get Japanese poems by one author, but many more and even in a perfect order!

Not only that, we also get before starting into the Haiku collection, a explanation was a Haiku is, a bit of backstory and also remarks as to how it got translated into English.

The layout of each page might stayed the same, but it was good, as we got the authors name and how long they lived at the top, on the right side the original Haiku and on the left the translation and also transliteration which was very cool and interesting to read too.

I absolutely enjoyed this book and it would be a lie to say that there was anything I didn't like.

Even the multiple repitions of spiders was just funny to me, and Masaoka Shiki seemed to be my favourite as his way of writing seemed past-aggresive which was just hilarious.

Haiku is a collection of new English translations of Japanese haiki by four classic authors—Basho, Buson, Issa and Shiki—that sit alongside the Japanese version and a transliteration. The poems are beautiful, snapshots that sometimes feel timeless and other times deeply within a particular time, but it is the format that really makes this book. For a beginner learning Japanese who also writes and reads poetry, this is a great format to be able to read haiku, enjoying both reading the translation and sounding out the original (including furigana for the kanji). For people who don't know Japanese characters, the transliteration will allow people to try reading the poems aloud in Japanese, which is nice, so the format with all of these versions together on a page makes it accessible to a broad audience. This was a great way to first properly encounter Japanese haiku.

Most of my favourites were by Basho. What a sweet lovely collection of haikus to read. You can really see the picture each person was painting and the different styles they each had.
