Well. Wow.
First off, I loved the reviews of ‘Chitaly’ - a Chinese/italian restaurant on JustEat where what they ordered was never what they received. The reviews were funny and just like the ones you often read on takeaway apps.
Then the book ended very abruptly and I hadn’t realised it was only a sampler so quite disappointed. For this reason I can’t rate it higher than a two purely because it’s only one story out of supposedly many and it wouldn’t be a balance review. The short story alone is a five star.
Oh my goodness I was lucky enough to receive a sampler for this arc and oh my gosh I cannot wait for the full book to be released! I don’t think anyone could understand how excited I am!!’
This sample was so bizarre but I need to know more!! I really loved Penance and was delighted to hear Eliza Clark was back, can’t wait to get my hands on the full version of this intriguing short story collection!
An entertaining short story, that ended abruptly. Different reviews of a mysterious restaurant delivering a strange mix of Chinese and Italian food. I enjoyed it and it made me laugh a couple of times, but when I requested the ARC I did not realise it was only a sampler story. It seems clearer on the NetGalley page now.
Gave me a good taste, pun intended, of the book but impossible to judge or score the collection on this alone.
I am sadly also always hungry (for more of this book). November well and truly can't come quickly enough!!
This title is one of the short stories from Clark's upcoming She's Always Hungry. I absolutely loved this weird little story! Told through JustEat reviews for a Chinese-Italian takeway, this story is inventive and strange and totally compelling. Consider me hyped for the full book in November.
Okay, I have to admit that as soon as this popped up on the ‘recently added titles’ page, I hit request, and didn’t realise it was only a sampler, featuring one of the short stories, until I was approved. Whoops.
However - this is a very funny little appetiser for Clark’s upcoming short story collection. Titled ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’, the story is made up of reviews of a strange takeaway, that serves both Chinese and Italian food, speedily delivered by an Australian. The food varies in edibility.
Like always, Clark’s approach feels sharp and fresh, and she perfectly carves out a strange little narrative purely made out of online reviews. I cannot wait to see what other little oddities she’s written, when I get my hands on the full collection, later in the year. Consider me fully intrigued.
Thank you to the publishers, and Netgalley, for this sampler.
Always love when authors manage to tell an entire story through an unconventional medium and this sampler from Eliza Clark’s new short story collection She’s Always Hungry is entirely told through the google views of a Chinese-Italian hybrid restaurant. Very impressive how Clark manages to make the characters distinguishable and wholly different through their reviews. I have been left thoroughly confused by the story but also very intrigued and more than a little bit hungry.
Thank you to Faber and Faber and NetGalley for providing me with an eARC. All opinions are my own.
I didn't realize I downloaded just a sample story and not the whole collection and it took me a moment to find out why my ebook ended in five minutes. That's on me.
Anyway, onto the story. Oh boy. It's just a bunch of reviews for a Chinese-Italian pizza (ish?) restaurant talking about the weird experiences they had with delivery. It doesn't seem like much but the way the author manages to lace weird stuff into the stories and keep the tone fun and humorous is great and I am very excited to get my hands on the whole collection.
I really enjoyed this and will definitely read the rest of the collection when it comes out! I feel like Hannah from Clitheroe because I want to know what else is yet to come!
Great to be able to read this short story from Eliza Clark's forthcoming collection. I loved this story because I'm fascinated with online reviews, and this is a story told using reviews for 'Chitaly', a mysterious delivery-based restaurant. Loved the touches like a reviewer mispelling 'sauce' as 'source' which gives it a sense of realism. Can't wait to read the rest of them!
As a fan of Eliza Clark and someone who enjoys a well constructed short story, this was a wonderful glimpse into what alludes to a very interesting collection of short stories.
It was a quick read, yet I was left with more questions than anything else. This one confused me. I don’t actually know what it’s about really. Other than a delivery driver speaks in an Australian accent, and delivers pizzas to households hundreds of miles away?! But no idea as to why.
Written in a quirky format - as a series of reviews for a takeaway which may or may not exist.
But the reviews were humorous and I found it original.
It did grab my attention, and the confusion just added to that. I would really like to read the book to find out what the other stories are like and if the confusion is a theme for me or if I can work it out!
Overall, a weird story that made me slightly uncomfortable, but intrigued as to what’s going to come next!
An intriguing glimpse into what promises to be a quirky and inventive short story collection. I would appreciate the opportunity to read more.
Eliza Clark’s "The Shadow Over Little Chitaly" is a uniquely compelling short story that really packs a punch. Uniquely through restaurant reviews for a peculiar takeaway spot named 'Little Chitaly,' the customers of this ‘restaurant’ explain the unusual food, inexplicable Austrailian accents, and suspiciously quick delivery.
The writing is fun and weirdly believable. I’m impressed how Clark has managed to build distinguishable characters/voices in the different reviews. It’s definitely a good story and I’m looking forward to reading the rest!
Thank you again for this review copy.
I love Eliza Clark and her writing in this is exceptional yet again! Dark humour, clever prose, just perfection.
I can’t wait to actually read the full book! This is only one excerpt from the novel - rather than the whole book. So it definitely left me leaving more.
Love Eliza, love the writing, hate that this is just an excerpt. I need the rest of the book immediately!!
I’m not usually a fan of short stories because they cut off right when you’re invested but for Eliza Clark, you make the exception, right?
Well, reader, it happened again, I got fully invested in the story and it ended, the excerpt ended and I wanted to continue reading the rest of the book. Except this time I’m not upset, I’m very excited for November 7th, when this releases so that I can devour this in its entirety!
Thank you so much to Faber & Faber for the chance to read this excerpt before the book is released! 🩷❤️ #NetGalley #ShesAlwaysHungry
Eliza Clark's debut short story collection promises to "plumb the depths of that most basic human feeling: hunger", and I think it's kind of genius that the first and only story granted to us lucky few successful ARC applicants is this short and sweet little nugget, composed entirely of increasingly surreal online reviews for a Chinese-Italian fusion restaurant which may or may not exist, and which is almost certainly run by white/tan/blonde and beachy Australian cultists if it does. It's not as overtly dark as either of Clark's previous novels - both of which I've loved - but its absurdism and its ambiguity hint at darker things to come.
This short story was a collection of several justeat reviews for a mysterious restaurant offering a clash of Chinese and Italian food. It was gripping, unique, and has left me even more intrigued for the full book.
Clark showcased her talent in making it genuinely seem like there were so many different people writing their reviews. ( I also very much respect Hannah for her commitment to the cause.)
I would definitely order from little Chitaly and I do wonder about the ominous apples…
An amazing excerpt of Eliza Clark's next title - the short story is funny in its portrayal of the different characters' confused reviews, yet has an unsettling undertone and fantastical elements. Can't wait to read the rest!
I really enjoyed the short story excerpted from this book that was included in the download. It was masterfully written with a sense of mystery and unease, and the characters’ voices felt so real! I’m a big fan of this author and can’t wait to read the whole book!
