Thank you to netgalley and faber for allowing me to read a sample story from this short story collection. I can’t wait for the full collection to come out now as I really enjoyed ‘The shadow over little chitaly’. This story made me laugh out loud, it was a tad weird but highly enjoyable.
With thanks to the author, publishers Faber and Faber Ltd, and NetGalley for providing with an eARC of this sampler in exchange for my honest review.
The sampler story, "The Shadow Over Little Chitaly" is certainly mysterious, which I liked. Lots of customers ordered from Little Chitaly using JustEats and got something completely different from what they ordered, but then a few got what they wanted and it tasted great. This range of good to bad reviews is probably a good representation of real restaurant reviews!
Then there's the weird delivery guy that appears impossibly quickly with the food and doesn't say very much, and in one instance stood staring at the customer's front door for 20 minutes after his delivery had been made!
So all in all a nice setup, but there was nothing at the end of the story to explain or even hint at what was going on, which left me scratching my head a little.
Overall this sampler story was unfortunately not for me, and didn't make me want to seek out the full collection.
I received an advance sample of this short story collection. The story I received was not what I had expected as a fan of Eliza Clark. The surrealism reminded me of Mona Awad, who I also enjoy. Very excited for this release and to read the other short stories. I will update my review at that point.
Thank you NetGalley and Faber and Faber for the advance sample!
sampler review!!
i found this sample SO funny and SO creepy. i’m already completely hooked and so intrigued to see what clark does with the rest of the book. ready & waiting for the release date!!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Faber and Faber LTD for a sampler of She's Always Hungry for an honest review. This story was so funny and amazing - I'm now ready to read the whole book!!
I’m not really sure what I just read but i really enjoyed it. I found it strange and funny and am really keen to know how this collection continues. It has really piqued my interest and I can’t wait for the release!
This sampler has only made me more excited to read Eliza Clark’s latest release. What I read encapsulated everything I love about Clark’s work, I was unsettled, intrigued, confused, and amused.
Thank you to Eliza Clark, Faber and Faber Ltd, and NetGallery for the opportunity to read this book.
As always, Eliza Clark's writing is dark and sharply humorous. I ate this extract up and cannot wait to read the whole collection.
Having read Boyparts for our book club I was very interested in this sample story. Was pretty bizarre and I loved it!! Can’t wait to read more!!!
An excellent taste of Eliza's short story collection- consider me intrigued! I really enjoyed this - although not sure how I feel about Chitaly pizza!
"She's Always Hungry" by Eliza Clark is a dark, gritty novel that dives into obsession and self-destructive behavior with an unflinching honesty. The main character’s inner turmoil and compulsions are portrayed in a way that’s both unsettling and captivating. Clark’s writing style is raw and edgy, making the narrative feel immediate and intense. While it’s not always an easy read due to its heavy themes, the book is incredibly compelling and thought-provoking. If you’re into stories that explore the darker sides of human nature, this one’s for you.
I already love this book just from this sampler. I love how Eliza Clark is playing with format and style and somehow manages to make me feel so much from the most mundane of things. Cant wait to read the whole collection.
How incredible will this book be if this 13-pages-pdf gave me the chills? I finished this sampler eager to keep reading about the story and wanting to know what was going on. And I'm usually a difficult person to love creepy stories.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Faber and Faber for the opportunity to read this! I adored it.
Weird, but I’m into it. I do think this strange epistolary story told through takeaway reviews might not be totally representative of Clark’s style but I can’t wait to read the whole thing.
"The Cloud over Little Chitaly" is just one of the short stories in Eliza Clark's new release, She's Always Hungry. It is written as a series of reviews on JustEat of a restaurant called Little Chitaly. This is not a format I have experienced before and it really intrigued me. The reviews were a mixture of funny, obscure, and unsettling. By the end of the chapter/short story my curiosity peaked and I was dying to find out more about this odd little restaurant. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and I look forward to reading the rest of the book upon its release. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers Faber for the opportunity to read a sample of She's Always Hungry. As always, all opinions are my own.
As much as I am curious as to what happens after this sampler, I found the format of reviews moving the plot forward a bit challenging, especially because it was rather long for such a format.
I do not know what to expect - not in the ‘it is so mysterious and thrilling, you can’t guess what is about to come’ sense so much, but rather it is impossible to assess if I would be immersed in the following steps of this story.
It is ambiguous for my tastes. With that being said, I am still happy to give the full book a go. Perhaps the sampler was just not for me; though I am all for new narrative formats, devices, hybrid genres, and anything new and compelling in storytelling. And perhaps, if the sampler were longer, I would have felt more rewarded as a reader, and been more engaged with the story.
Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to read this as an arc
Obviously this is just a sample so I can’t give a too in dept review but from what I got I was intrigued and can’t wait to get the book. Also, I liked the writing and humor so much that I immediately went to get this author’s other work.
I will update this, once the book comes out and I finish the rest
Ehh this was a weird story to choose for a sampler. I haven’t read anything from this author before…and I’m not sure if I’ll pick this up when it comes out. It wasn’t bad but it just didn’t give me enough to go off of.
Absolutely fascinating what is available and I’m really excited to read the rest when it comes out.
There’s not much else to say as this was a sampler and not even the full chapter.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for a sample of Eliza Clarks new book.
I absolutely adored Eliza's previous works, Boy Parts and Penance, and can confidently say she is one of my favourite authors. I adore her storytelling and creativity, and always find myself completely compelled by her writing. This sample was only short, but straight away I need more. Already I can tell that this will be brilliant just like her previous works, and I am so excited for it's release. I already cannot wait for my preorder of this to arrive. I'm excited to see what else Eliza has in store for us.
