the first chapter is very captivating and it was a surprise because of the way the story was written!
can’t wait to read more of this unique collection of stories when it will be released on november 7!
thank you NetGalley & Faber for providing me with a sampler of this book ahead of its release in exchange for an honest review!
I loved this story. Eliza Clark is such an imaginative writer and this collection seems like it's going to be amazing. I'm looking forward to the release of She's Always Hungry.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.
The snippet is pretty interesting. It’s a really unique way of formatting a story, I won’t lie it took me a moment to get into it, but worked surprisingly well.
Feels a bit more realistic and rooted in (slightly unhinged) realism than I had expected and kinda wanted a bit more in terms of the absurdity but it’s definitely a little on the spooky side.
Didn’t feel like it had much of a payoff though, but I suppose that’s the point of a sampler! You’re left wanting more, but it’s definitely a good little taster.
She’s Always Hungry by Eliza Clark:
This is a review of the one chapter of a book of short stories. And it fulfills Stephen King’s definition of what one is, a kiss in the dark from a stranger. ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’ is online reviews of a takeaway, where the food appears to regress to its original state. It’s possibly the weirdest, most unsettling thing I’ve read for years. Maybe if Faber and Faber send me the rest of the book, I can make an informed decision on the other content before November 7th. #shesalwayshungry
My love and appreciation of short stories has recently been rekindled and the excerpt I got from this collection is a big part of it.
I read the story titled "The Shadow over Little Chitaly" that was kindly provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher. It was just great. A short, whip-smart, funny, absurd little story written as reviews of a restaurant called Little Chitaly, from customers on JustEat.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to get my hands on the full collection in a few weeks.
Thank you to netgalley for an advanced sampler to review!
This short story collection is summed up great by the Chitaly story. Funny, strangely compelling and quietly sinister, this story is exactly what I come to expect from Eliza Clark. Something always seems as though it is lurking beneath the surface which makes the reader compelled to find out more. Written through reviews, the format gives something different to the standard anthology or collection and is a fun way to consume the media.
This short sample from Eliza Clark’s new collection was short but extremely poignant. I can’t wait to read the full collection when it arrives. Love her previous work and I am sure that this will be nothing short of amazing. Thank you Faber for the sample!
This one short story -The Shadow Over Little Chitaly- from She’s Always Hungry had my undivided attention. I loved the formatting and style of this short story. At first I was unsure how the format would work in terms of story telling but it worked out really well. The Shadow Over Little Chitaly was unlike anything I’ve ever read before and I wish I had more She’s Always Hungry to read. I love Eliza Clark’s slightly unhinged plots and stories. Her delivery of story telling is always immaculate. I will definitely be getting this book to read when it is published.
Wow, I can truly say that this is unlike anything I’ve ever read before- in a good way! I got the chance to read ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’ and I was absolutely hooked. I really enjoyed the way in which the story was told purely through the use of reviews placed by users on Justeat. I found myself getting more and more curious as to why Little Chitaly does such strange mashups of Chinese/Italian/Indian food. I liked the fact that Hannah decided to do some investigating and try to work out what had happened but was left even more confused by the end.
I will definitely be getting a copy of this upon release as I just love books with quirky or weird stories and after reading this sampler, it’s clear I will thoroughly enjoy the rest of the book
What a great little nugget to be teased with! The Shadow of Chitaly was absurd and fun. The story is written as a series of Google reviews, which was really neat. I'm very excited to read the other stories in this collection!
I was granted access to a sample of She’s Always Hungry, with the short story I read being ‘The shadow over Little Chitaly.”
I was absolutely obsessed with the structure of this story, it was written in the form of reviews from customers ordering from a weird ass Chinese/Italian restaurant. Forever in awe of Eliza Clark’s ability to make seemingly mundane themes into something so freaky and grotesque. The attention to detail is insane - the instagram account mentioned in this story is real and did in fact make me laugh.
Absolutely feigning for when i can get my grubby little hands on this whole book & will be updating my review when i can do so.
Thank-you to Faber & NetGalley for the ARC.
I've read the sampler story as I was granted a review copy from Netgalley. It's interesting and I'd try more of Eliza Clark's work, but I'm left feeling confused.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC
Not at all what I expected but I found it quite funny despite being bizarre. Would need to read more to be able to give a more insightful review.
Very funny sampler - I will definitely be purchasing the full collection when it comes out in November! Looking forward to seeing what Eliza Clark can do with short stories.
I had the chance to read a sample from Eliza Clark's forthcoming short story collection, She's Always Hungry, and read the entirety of a piece called "The Shadow over Little Chitaly". From the first sentence, I was completely hooked. The story is framed as a series of reviews for a take-out restaurant named Little Chitaly, and while it starts off simple enough, Clark quickly weaves in unexpected layers and creates a complex web of oddity. As the reviews go on and the narrative unfolds, it veers into the surreal and absurd in the most delightful way, full of clever, unpredictable twists and turns. I found the story not only sharp and witty, but also unexpectedly funny. In a word, In a few words, I'd classify She's Always Hungry as weird and wonderful, and now I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of her collection.

I feel like this book is exactly like the just eat reviews, some rate it really high and some really low.
Personally I didn’t get it, I might be the wrong target audience. I understand that they all ordered and got completely different but I expected an ending to explain what was going on but nothing so I was confused. Saying that I did still rate it 3⭐️ because it was an interesting read
I was over the moon to have the opportunity to read this sampler of She’s Always Hungry by Eliza Clark. I am unable to resist Clarks work, I was a big fan of Boy Parts and have recently read Penance. This book is a collection of short stories and this sampler was a story called ‘The Shadow Over Little Chitaly’. Told in the format of JustEat reviews, I thought this was an interesting way of formatting the story but nevertheless, I was hooked. It was twisted, weird and yet so captivating. It makes me wonder what the rest of the collection is going to be like, I just can’t wait to get it.
Before receiving this sample, I had actually already pre-ordered the book. Now I have read this, it is making me very excited for the release!
Very grateful that I got to read one of the short stories from this collection early and I really enjoyed it!
Instantly recognisable as Eliza Clark's writing, very weird and intriguing and nicely eases into the theme of the collection. This one was a bit more off-putting humour leaning, so I'm super excited to read the more horror leaning stories in November!
I’ve loved Eliza’s previous books and have rated them both 5 stars however was not at all impressed with this short story. I’ll definitely still be purchasing the book when it’s released to see how I feel about the other stories, but I feel Eliza’s strength may lie in full novels as opposed to a shorter format.
Sorry, this is genius! I adored Boy Parts and Penance but generally not the biggest fan of horror or short stories, so I wasn't sure if I would read the full collection, but now I definitely will be! Also, very excited that a fellow Rebecca in Durham was featured!
