A satire of life of 1% written as a book of bedtime stories. I had fun and loved it
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I thought we'd get something coherently taking the mickey out of children's stories of old – the traditional tales, but with a comment about how bleddy expensive those lashings of ginger beer are now. Instead we get something quite a bit broader – but still tidy little stories, with beginnings, middles and ends, and all in the right order, concerning exceedingly upper class brats. Each story starts by announcing what day it is – Valentine's, someone's birthday, Halloween, Bring a Bastard Child to Work Day, that kind of thing – and the nannies are probably interchangeable, everyone owns multiple horses before they're nine, and – well, you get the gist.
It is broad, as I say, but it's not unfunny with it. Ms Blyton would barely recognise the contents, however – and that's not just because there's already a reference to Ozempic, and the children have the names of 'posh' cheeses – oh, and Perinea. It is a successful, quick and witty, adults-only novelty read, it does only last an hour, but it does what it says on the tin, and everyone goes home either sacked (the nannies) or to have a very happy ending. Charming stuff.
These are a hilarious twist on the typical children’s story’s. I loved Daniel’s Tik Tok videos so I knew I would love this
I requested this because I love Daniel Foxx's TikTok content, and it did not disappoint. He's as funny on paper as he is on camera! The stories are funny without being mean, and often made me genuinely laugh out loud. The illustrations are gorgeous as well.
If you haven't seen Daniel's online content, the best way I can sell this to you is that this book is for everyone who enjoys the posh people on The Catherine Tate Show (maybe the most niche british reference ever?). If you haven't seen it, here is a link to fix that - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUNssEtAwr8
I recommend picking this one up, or gifting it to someone (and bo0rrowing it yourself).
Thanks to NetGalley, Octopus Publishing and Daniel Foxx for the e-arc. All opinions are my own etc.
A short, amusing little gift book! A little repetitive, but very in-keeping with Daniel Foxx's TikTok series of the same name. Foxx works genuine bits of satire into an otherwise light tongue-in-cheek book of comic stories, to great effect.
I give this 4 stars, because it is exactly what it says on the tin.
Thank you to NetGalley, Octopus, and Daniel Foxx for a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
A great stocking filler, this book reads like a cross between one of the ladybird books everyone read in school, and an Enid Blyton book. This book is very tongue in cheek humour at the expense of the upper classes, and would make a great gift for any aspiring Tarquins in your life
