I received this DRC from NetGalley.
A recipe book about sandwiches doesn't sound very exciting, but the variety of sandwiches included make it interesting. I appreciated the inclusion of international options. I liked that the vintage recipes were updated with modern equivalents. A couple of the recipes are just ridiculous (like the toast sandwich), and are ones I have never heard of, so learning about them with a bit of history was cool. I also liked the historical information about the condiments. The photography and design of the book overall was done well. The instructions are easy to follow since they're sandwiches.

I learned that maybe I am not such a sandwich person after all. This is fine and delves into the history of sandwiches, but there wasn't any creative sandwiches that I haven't already heard of. It was pretty basic and didn't offer many photos to accompany the recipes. I am a visual eater as well, so nothing sparked my interest to make. The vegetarian section was a welcomed surprise, but it was mostly just sauteed veggies on bread. Nothing crazy inventive.

Just finished "Sandwiches of History" by Barry Enderwick and I'm hungry now! This delightful cookbook-meets-history-book is a great read. The book is packed with fascinating historical gems, plus nearly 100 recipes that range from fancy club sandwiches to unexpectedly creative combos.
What makes this book special is how Enderwick modernises old-school recipes while keeping their historical charm. Each sandwich comes with its origin story, and there are deep dives into the history of everyday condiments like mustard and mayo. The photos are gorgeous, and the whole book is fun to flip through, even if you're not planning to cook anything.
It was noted in the book that not all popular sandwiches were included, maybe most notably for me, the Reuben. This is because the author didn't feel we needed yet another recipe, or that he couldn't add anything to it. However, there were recipes for a croque monsieur, a sloppy joe, a chip buttie, and a bahn mi so that seemed like a bit of weird logic to exclude the Reuben but include a Sloppy Joe.
Overall though, whether you're a food history buff or just someone who likes a good sandwich, this book is a treat. It's the kind of read that makes you want to try something new and expand your sandwich horizons.

"Sandwiches of History" instantly proved to be an absolute delight as soon as I started it. It works wonderfully as a hyper-specific cookbook, but its surprisingly rich recipe variety, easy to follow directions, and all the helpful tips that Enderwick provides here and there to help punch things up. But honestly, I found that it frankly works just as well as a genuinely interesting read overall. I really enjoyed learning about these various sandwiches that have popped up all over the world over time, and appreciated all the historical context that was provided when possible by the author.
Definitely a strong recommend - both for those who are looking to change up what they can between two piece of bread, and also those who just enjoy a stimulating bit of food history!

FIVE STARS all the way!
I absolutely LOVE this cookbook and all the recipes that it contains. The photos are wonderful, the instructions are easy to follow and I honestly just love having all these recipes right at my fingertips. I do not know that I realized there were this many variations of sandwiches. And for those that say they are not a sandwich fan.... give this book a try and you are bound to find a recipe that changes your mind!

I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this! I liked the new ideas for sandwiches with tips to glam it up, as well as the mouthwatering pictures

Sandwiches of History the Cookbook is a unique concept. Not only do you learn new recipes, you learn about history as well. I found the Ingredient Deep Dive really interesting. The recipes were unique yet simple to make, and many include tips or ways to elevate the recipe. The book is well-organized and includes beautiful photographs of the sandwiches. It was a great touch to include the year each recipe was created. I really enjoyed this book. This would be a great book for foodies and fans of history alike.

What a fun concept for a cookbook. The recipes combine nostalgia and delicious flavors, perfect for a history buff or any home cook. I appreciated the simplicity of the recipes and ingredients which can be found easily in any grocery store. I especially liked the club sandwich chapter (who doesn't love bacon) and the international sandwich chapter. Yum!

A book about sandwiches? Sign me up. As with any recipe, each ingredient matters, and the ingredient deep dive explains the importance and details of the items we often take for granted. There’s a nice amount of variety and you’ll be sure to discover a popular sandwich you haven’t tried before.

First, I love a good sandwich, so already this cookbook was a win. I have even had some of these growing up which was nice going down memory lane a little bit.
I felt that all of these recipes were easily approachable and you could sub out ingredients if needed - like the bread type if you truly didn't have it and didn't mind the slight change in taste/texture.
I love that someone devoted this much time to the history of the sandwich. The author is a good guy for doing that.
I really enjoyed looking at this cookbook of sandwiches and plan on making a few myself!

This was a very visually appealing book. With lots of fun facts about- bread my favourite. Some recipes I’ve never seen before and it gave me great exposure. However, I noticed that menbosha was listed under Korea. I know the author has tweaked the ingredients (where he mentioned in the book). Nothing wrong with adding something extra. However, my issue was with the history behind the food origins. I believe it became a popular food treat in Korea but it was not originally from Korea.

Book Review: Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook by Barry W. Enderwick
Rating: 5 Stars
Hey fellow foodie lovers! I just had to share my thoughts on Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook by Barry W. Enderwick. Seriously, if you’re even remotely into sandwiches (and let’s be real, who isn’t?), this book is an absolute gem!
First off, Barry has really outdone himself with nearly 100 recipes that span centuries. From the classic Cucumber Tea Sandwich to the wildly unexpected Hot Chicken Tuna Sandwich, it’s like a history lesson and a cooking class rolled into one delicious package. You’ll find everything from beloved classics to some obscure yet surprisingly tasty options. Each recipe comes with a little backstory, so you can impress your friends with your newfound sandwich knowledge while you munch away.
The author has meticulously gathered the source material for countless sandwiches and has carefully reimagined them, adhering closely to the authenticity of each original creation while offering extensive guidance on how to successfully prepare each one. He also includes some creative “plus ups” to elevate these sandwiches and make them fit for modern palates.
The layout of the book is bright and colorful, making it a joy to flip through. I especially loved the sections dedicated to the history of condiments. Who knew these staples had such rich backstories? It’s fun and educational—definitely a winning combo for any foodie!
Honestly, Sandwiches of History is not just a cookbook; it’s a delightful read that belongs on the shelf of anyone who loves food. Whether you're a seasoned sandwich connoisseur or just someone who's curious about what goes between two slices of bread, this book is perfect for you. Some great sandwich ideas. I don't really like to give star ratings to Cookbooks, but this one is definitely a win

I picked up this book while I was browsing on Netgalley. It just looked like fun. The author has scoured old cookbooks from the mid-1800s to the 1970s for sandwich ideas. He researched recipes and rewrote them with standardized measurements so each recipe makes one sandwich. For many of the recipes he then presents ideas of how to enhance them to suit today’s tastes.
I think my favorite recipe was for the toast sandwich. That is just about what it sounds like. Take a piece of toasted bread and put it between two untoasted pieces of bread. It was recommended for sick people who couldn’t handle anything harder to digest.
The rest of the recipes are more complex. There are several variations on club sandwiches and grilled cheeses. There are a lot of flavor combinations that I would have never thought of. I don’t know that I would ever end up making anything from this book but it was bright and colorful with delightful commentary on the recipes and the history surrounding them. I also really enjoyed the sections of the history of mustard, mayo, and ketchup. This is a fun read!

Well, I finished reading this cookbook and now I'm hungry. Sandwiched of History includes a wide variety of sandwich recipes with easy to follow steps and drool-worthy photos. Come for the recipes, leave with some additional sandwich history!

A well-organised recipe book with short histories of some famous sandwiches.
The unique tips were the highlight and I liked the Korean sandwich recipe.
I must admit that I am fond of particular types of sandwiches only and the majority of the recipes in this book did not appeal to me; however to be fair, this is a lovely and handy sandwich book for popular sandwich lovers.

Thank you Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the eARC of Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook! All opinions in this review are my own.
This was such a fun read and would make a great gift for any sandwich lover! I like how the author included the history of each sandwich and ways to enhance them too! I can't wait to try some of these!
