Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I’m a psychology major about to start my Masters. This is a great book and resource to have. Gives you an inside on many different therapies.
I got an advance copy of this through NetGalley and it’s a very accessible book. I am a trainee counsellor and it was great to read about some types of therapies I hadn’t come across before. I am also a coach and there was some cross over there. A few bits pointed specifically towards American systems - particularly around ethics but it didn’t detract from understanding or enjoyment.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book!
This was a super easy read and very informative — I finished the book in just a couple of hours. As a psychology student, a lot of this information was familiar. But my expertise is not in counseling, so the chapters on different therapy and treatment types were especially interesting to me. I suppose I’m only giving 4 stars because it was a bit less specific than I thought it would be, but is still a very well-written work for an audience maybe not as familiar with the psychology field. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick introduction to personality psychology, therapy types, ethics, and the effects of different societal and health complications on mental health treatment.
A Scholarly Journey Through Psychology contains 14 chapters covering a variety of topics. One of the main subjects is how to ethically practice the profession of psychologist. The other big focus is substance use disorders.
It is obvious that Cornwall put a lot of effort in compiling and writing this book. It is well researched and there is an extensive list of references and source citations throughout. I did however feel that some of the chapters like thanatophobia in diabetes patients didn't quite match the other topics that were covered.
From the synopsis I expected this book to go in depth regarding various topics. Sadly for me A Scholarly Journey Through Psychology fell short in this respect. It felt more like an introduction to a collection of topics. There are practical examples that help illustrate the theoretical concepts, though they only discuss methods and topics. However there are no examples of conversations between psychologist and patient. I would also have liked Cornwall to go more in-depth on certain topics, like how to actually create anti-racist and anti-sexist policies. To bridge the gap between theory and practical application.
I would recommend A Scholarly Journey Through Psychology to readers who consider themselves at beginner to intermediate level with regards to psychology. I can also see this book being used as a study guide for an Introduction to Psychology course. The book covers a variety of topics and does a good job at summarizing the concepts it shares with its reader. The formatting makes the text easy to parse, and the chapters make it well suited as reference material.
A Scholarly Journey Through Psychology is an insightful read into the vast world of psychology, covering everything from cognitive skills to therapeutic applications. Dr. Cornwall takes complex concepts and presents them in a way that’s thorough yet engaging, making this book a fantastic resource for anyone curious about the mind. I loved how each chapter offered real-world connections, making psychology feel both accessible and deeply relevant. It’s a great read for students or anyone fascinated by human behavior.
