Something's Wrong in Paradise Cove by Salie Thomas is a short, engaging story that explores themes of loss, resilience, and mystery. The book follows a woman, grieving the loss of her husband, as she embarks on a fresh start with her two young children in the seemingly idyllic Paradise Cove. However, the dream soon becomes a nightmare as unsettling events unfold, raising the question: is something—or someone—trying to drive them away?
This story drew me in with its intriguing premise and the promise of suspense. The setting is vividly described, painting a picture of a picturesque, isolated haven that hides its secrets well. The characters are relatable, especially the protagonist, whose struggles with grief and motherhood are handled with sensitivity. The friendships she forges along the way add warmth and contrast to the otherwise chilling occurrences at the cove.
While I enjoyed the overall story, I found that some elements felt a bit rushed, as if the plot could have benefited from more detail or a slightly slower pace to build tension. Additionally, there were a few minor grammatical and formatting errors that distracted from the reading experience. These could be easily addressed with a round of thorough editing.
Despite these issues, Something's Wrong in Paradise Cove offers an enjoyable and fast-paced read. The twists and turns kept me hooked, and the resolution provided a satisfying sense of closure. If you're looking for a quick mystery with an atmospheric setting and a touch of heart, this book is worth picking up. I look forward to seeing more from Salie Thomas in the future!
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a relatively short book about a woman with two young children who loses her husband after a tragic accident. She moves to Devon and purchases a beautiful cottage that she feels may be able to restore some happiness into their lives.
But not long after moving in, things begin to go wrong and some of them really quite awful. Luckily Gracie has made several great friends in the area around her and offers of help come in after these events. She was feeling quite scared and isolated and questions her decision but these new friendships have helped to give her back some sense of security. Is someone out to get her and why are these terrible occurrences happening?
I really enjoyed the book and it was a nice change from all the crime genre I normally read. I did find a couple of things a bit over the top but overall it was a great read. I will definitely look out for more books from this author.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
this book was very poorly written. it was filled with grammatical errors, typos, etc.
I did not know this was a short story going in so I was really surprised. I am glad it was short because it was painful! It was strange how major events were briefly discussed but then there were a lot of wasted details on meaningless things. It was not suspenseful at all and I could not connect with a single character!
This was really well written and thought the feel worked with the murder element and thought the mystery worked overall. The characters were everything that I was hoping for and felt the suspenseful atmosphere worked overall. Salie Thomas has a strong writing style and am excited for more.
Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. It was not written well and I didn't find it suspenseful at all. The characters were really hard to follow and did not have much of a personality. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this ARC!
I had trouble finishing this book and honestly wouldn’t have if it wasn’t such a short story. The grammatical errors and spelling mistakes and massive throughout the entire book, including character names. The entire story felt rushed and thrown together and didn’t flow well at all. I can appreciate the story but barely managed to get through it.
The book had several grammatical errors, and spacing issues. It felt like there was also missing detail throughout the book, almost like it was just sped through the publishing process.
The grammatical errors could be an easy fix with a good editor. as for the spacing issues, I have run into similar problems with this happening when helping edit final drafts in the past (depending on which editing application may have been used for this novel). It took a lot of conversing and coercing with support techs online to get things sorted out.
The grammar mistakes and spacing problems aside, I did really enjoy this book. It painted a very accurate portrait of adjusting to new life after the death of a loved one, and how a community of kind friendly people can come together and bring light into a dark time. It had great suspense, from subtle, seemingly unconnected moments, to shocking, impactful ones. The concept as a whole was excellent. I just felt that it needed more detail.
Awesome book!! Great author! Will be looking for more!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was really excited to read this book but unfortunately I didn’t love it. It was much shorter than I realised and I felt like it was all a bit rushed.
The story could have been great but it was almost unreadable with the grammatical errors and style.
I do however want to thank NetGalley and the publishers for my chance to read this ARC. I do also understand this is not the final version, therefore if you like the synopsis I would still recommend reading it when it is released.
This book didn't grab me as I thought it would. From the blurb I was ready for a heartwrenching read..after all who could be okay with as bad luck as Gracie seemed to have!?
But it just fell short. And I'm not even sure why. It wasn't bad. It's just didn't attach itself to me. But books can be just books. And I wouldn't say I would rather not have read it. All stories mean something to me. I love to read. And so this one might not be on my top 10. But a reading book it still was. If that makes sense, ha. And sometimes you just need a switch and a read. This was that. But given the storyline perhaps it shouldn't haven't been. I think it might have helped if it was fleshed out more by being longer?
This book was not for me. It was unfortunately riddled with grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors to the point where I almost gave up on it; even characters names changed spelling throughout. It read like an outline for a book rather than a book itself, with very little dialogue and a straightforward way of telling the reader what is happening versus actually immersing them into the story. The book is a short story versus a novel (which I did not know going in), and only took me about an hour to read. It centers on Gracie, who moves with her family to a fixer-upper cottage after the sudden death of her husband.
I found the story overall just awkward to read. I didn't connect with any character because I felt like the author was talking at me, and so much happened in so few pages that there was no chance to process anything or to give it the description it deserved. The writing style was also very odd, glossing over the major events that are covered in the synopsis but providing extreme detail, down to what specific time something happened, about innocuous events such as a birthday party. Years passed and the story abruptly ended and I was left confused about what really was wrong in Paradise Cove.
Overall, this didn't work for me in any way. I hope that at least the editing is tightened up to fix the many errors before the book is published. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First and foremost, Thank you to NetGalley & Troubador Publishing for this little short story.
I will say I might have went into this book a little biased, I have a bad habit of looking books up on here (goodreads), checking the rating & all that before I read the book, seeing the 1 bad review on this book beforehand definitely made me dive into Paradise searching for something to like. Had a warning beforehand there was some things I would have to ignore to get through and honestly it wasn't that hard, if you're not a stickler for punctuation and spelling then you can probably get through this book. I'm not sure a lot of people know about "Troubador publishing" so let me inform anyone else who wants to read this book
Troubador is a high-quality self-publishing service for authors who want to see their books published
"key words there being SELF PUBLISHING!!!" I highly support what they do.
Any who let's jump right into this little gem, shall we!?
It is a short story, only 18 chapters, very quick little read. I might have spent an hour or two of my time on it before bed and I'm not upset that I did, at all. Sometimes stories are just stories people, they're made up little quirky fun fairy tales!!
I will say I was a bad girl, and I judged a book by it's cover and because of the black stuff in the water on the cover (pretty sure it's the soil that's mentioned in the book), I assumed this would have more to do with the actual "cove", the water portion of the property & that's my bad there was no promises towards that. It was just my assumption, but I would have loved to read more about that portion of the property. Not sure if this is based on a real place but i got curious and looked it up, Holy Cow this picture does not do the place justice, this is twice now I've read about "Devon" and it looks absolutely beautiful!!! LOVED the Bristol Zoo shout out also made me curious if it was a real place! Looks like an awesome, very child interactive place. [Would have loved something like that in the states! I'm not sure if this is normal but as an old boring american I am very curious about the UK!!]
Anyway back to the story, This is about a woman starting over in life, Lucky enough to find her own little families getaway in Paradise (just about everyone's fantasy right!?), the setting sounds beautiful & sounds like they showed up and made it even more of a fantasy after the horses and the garden! I do love the little "twist"... I think it's realistic to find the place of your dreams then find out it wasn't so perfect after all, not going to go into this portion of the book. I'm not one to give away spoilers- but i will say I LOVED IT! I'm a nerd for mysterious caves and mysteries, I was very excited to learn what was in it. I for one Love them!! Not gonna say what but the thing that was made out to be so sinister, I actually own some so was fun to have that brought in, no poisonous ones but still I thought that was a exciting little part of the story and I loved finding out i was wrong about the "something wrong" it was a nice little surprise. & Little Christopher and Martha! Ugh that part had my heart all twisted up, I was happy to read of his happiness at the cove and his happy ending!!
OVERALL it was a great fun little read, very quick little short story and there was nothing bad about it. If you're like me and you make some assumptions this will probably be the story to strike them all off the list. I will also say there are moments of a beautiful writing style, maybe from a new author trying to find their way.
"She sensed a feeling of well being, as though she had found a place where she could belong."
Seriously isn't what we're all searching for in life? Just somewhere we can feel that well being, a place to call home and put all our own little touches on it! Who wouldn't want their own little slice of heaven in an isolated beautiful corner of the world!
Sometimes you gotta go through a little hell to get your heaven I guess :)
I loved it Thank you so much Salie for that fun little read & I will be here to read whatever you write next !
I was very disappointed in this book. The description sounded like it would be good, but in my honest opinion, this book was not only poorly written, the story was boring and carried on like it was being forced or rushed. If it weren't a short story, I absolutely would not have finished. There were also several grammar and spelling mistakes.

This could have been better and a lot of longer. I didn't realise that it was so short as I'm not keen on short stories or novellas. The idea was great but it stopped so abruptly. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
This book was shorter than I thought it would be and should have been longer. It seemed as if the author was full of ideas but wanted to put evey single one into this book. It made the writing seem very choppy and not well thought out. I would still give this author another try in the future but this book was not the best. Thanks, NetGalley for the ARC.
A woman's husband passes, quickly in this book. She moves to a new place, feeling she needs a fresh start.
She realizes there's a lot more to the town than meets the eye.
The cover on this book was lovely, and the premise was good. But, it ended abruptly, and it was almost like the author This was almost likethe author had a lot of ideas, and just pushed them together into a novel.
Thank you to Troubador Publishing and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Grace's husband has passed and she decides to visit Devon. Paradise Cove sounds like the change she needs but when someone tries to kill her she doesn't feel safe at all.
This is book I read in a morning and rather enjoyed. It is winderfully written and the story is beautfully told.
I loved the way the story progressed and I felt scared for Grace. I wanted to know the who's and why's...
A brilliant shortish story and very enjoyable..
A woman moves to a beautiful new place after the death of her husband. However, soon after moving there, someone tries to kill her. She soon realizes this paradise is not so great.
This sounded so interesting, but it was not what I expected. It seemed to be a novella or short story? There was no indication of this in the description, but it was very short. That is not inherently a problem, but the writing was so choppy and for a short book, it meant that it never really came together.
After the death of her husband, Gracie leaves her home and friends in London to begin a new life with her children. She moves to Worcester, then takes a holiday in Devon and finds a beautiful cove near a quarry and a picturesque windmill and decides to call it Paradise Cove! Well this was definitely one of the shortest books I’ve read! At least it seemed that way?! It was a decent read but I was very shocked that it ended so quickly! I guess it really wasn’t for me?! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this book!
This was a good one! I really enjoyed this book. I had a hard time putting this one down. I really enjoyed the writing style and the characters chemistry was great. This was a first for me by this author but will not be my last!
