THE KILLER INSIDE was my first novel by Kerry Wilkinson. She is now one of my favorite authors. This novel has a little bit of everything. The main character Jessica Daniel is complex and likeable. I love the guessing game of trying to figure out the main plot of the novel. It kept me guessing to the very end.
I always go into a suspense novel trying to analyze all of the characters as they are introduced. This one was no different. The book was a little slow and had quite a few main characters and side characters in it so it was a little hard to know if the author was simply describing an unimportant character too much, keeping the killer as a minor character just to throw the reader off, or if the killer was right in front of your face the whole time. I’m not going to ruin the ending, but let’s just say I guessed who the killer was at about 75% of the ways through after the whole story comes unraveling. Before that, there really wasn’t too much the author gave in the way of little hints as to whodunit. This was a pretty good read but it definitely was not a very complex story and did not have me gripping me seat or biting my nails in the least. It was, however, a quick read, and I would recommend it as a vacation read because it was very easy to follow.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Kerry Wilkinson for my free copy of this book.
Another crime procedural series that has taken me a while to get to but I'm so glad I've got to it now. I really enjoyed this book, Jessica Daniel has the humour and sarcasm I like in a person and she can't control what comes out of her mouth sometimes.
Such a good start to a series and one I know I need to read all of.
Go and get it, pick it up now and give it a read, you won't be disappointed!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this review copy.
This was my first book by this author, and not that it really makes any difference I assumed Kerry was a woman! (Just to be clear, he isn’t!!)
We meet Jessica Daniel. She’s a Detective Sergeant in Manchester and she investigating the murder of a woman who has been found dead in a locked house. Not only does she have to find the killer with almost no clues at all, she has to work out how they managed to get in and out of a locked house. It soon turns out that this isn’t the only murder, and Jessica now has a serial killer on her hands.
This was a great read, it hooks you in at page one and keeps going. It’s not the most complex of stories, but it has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing well into the book. Set in Manchester and its surrounding areas, it’s a gritty Northern thriller. It’s not too gory or brutal, just a good old fashioned police whodunit! You may guess where and how the dots connect, but you won’t guess the murderer until near the end – well, I didn’t anyway! It’s a clever worked out story with a hint of humour thrown in!
I love the character of Jessica. There’s no past sob story, just a hardworking woman who dragged herself through the ranks. She might not do everything right and she might let her temper get the better of her sometimes, but she works hard and gets results. I like her relationship with the other members of her team, and her superiors. I can’t wait to see more of Jessica in the next books in the series – I have the next 3 books waiting and I’ve raided the shelves of the library for the others!
Definitely one to recommend! Five Stars!
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Kerry Wilkinson for this ARC.
He is a new author for me so this was great to actually find a male author I love to read . I have so very few male authors that I like to read. His character of Jessica Daniel was "human". She got angry, made mistakes, spoke out of line, and fell over her own two feet. I so love her ! Thanks for such a great character and I'm looking forward to more of her !
I've also posted a review on Goodreads and Amazon
I have only read a couple of other books by this author but had been meaning to get my hands on the book in this series for a while and decided in January that I'd start on the Jessica Daniel series and see how far I get - well I have now completed the first book and I thoroughly enjoyed it - I loved the pace and the main characters and it is a good story, but I guessed who was responsible around half way through but it didn't really put me off, even if it did slightly spoil the ending - on to the next book in the series now, really looking forward to it!
