Catching up with a back log of books and kicking myself at not having read this sooner.
A twisty thriller of a read, a suspenseful psychological thriller. The author delivers with what a reader wants from a book. It leaves you wanting to keep reading.
A great twist that makes you realise you should assume you know where the book is going.

This book is incredible. Pinborough has a real talent for gripping you into a story right from the first sentence and not letting you go until she’s done with you. The twist in this book is one that no one could ever see coming. The author is an auto-buy for me and in eagerly awaiting whatever she will give us next!

Gripping, twisty and so surprising.

As a journalist I reviewed this for a print publication in 2017 and really enjoyed it.

At the time I didn't realise I also had to post a review on here - apologies!

"Behind Her Eyes" by Sarah Pinborough is a thrilling and suspenseful psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The novel follows the story of Louise, a single mother who becomes entangled in a complicated love triangle with her new boss, David, and his enigmatic wife, Adele.

Pinborough's writing style is engaging and immersive, drawing the reader into the story from the very beginning. The characters are well-developed and complex, with each one harbouring secrets and hidden agendas that are gradually revealed throughout the novel.

One of the standout features of "Behind Her Eyes" is its clever and unexpected plot twists. Just when you think you have everything figured out, Pinborough throws in another curveball that will leave you reeling. The twists and turns of the story are expertly crafted and will keep you guessing until the very end.

The novel also delves into the themes of obsession, addiction, and mental health, adding depth and complexity to the story. Pinborough doesn't shy away from exploring the darker aspects of human nature, and the result is a novel that is both thrilling and thought-provoking.

Overall, "Behind Her Eyes" is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that is sure to keep you guessing until the very end.

This story engrossed me from the start - the story was not overly fast moving, but a good speed to keep my attention.
I can't honestly say I did not predict how the story was going to go and I gasped at the twists. Absolutely loved it, have recommended it to everyone

I requested this because I had loved The Language of Dying so much. Reading that book not long after the death of my grandmother, it gave voice to an experience which I had not found in fiction. However, Behind Her Eyes was not the same. It was just another 'Gone Girl' wannabe and there are so many of those out there. The pace was decent, the characters were okish although I didn't particularly like any of them ... it just did not have anything like the same personal impact. And similarly to how that weird horse seemed to come out of nowhere in the Language of Dying, so too did the ending of this one seem ... odd. Not hashtag worthy, just a bit strange and it didn't really gel for me. Contemporary thrillers are just not my scene.

Utterly brilliant.
From start to finish, as always, I was totally gripped and read in one sitting.
I will never get bored with Pinborough's books. She's a fabulous writer.
Loved it and will be recommending it to the whole world!

Such an original concept and really enjoyed reading it. While I did start to guess what the 'concept' was around the middle portion of the book, the characters and plot kept me going. I look forward to reading Pinborough's next novel!

This book started out brilliantly but after a few chapters I wasn’t feeling it and I hated the way the book ended. Sorry not for me. Just to add I have read other books from this author which I have loved.

Very very every late to the table on this one.

All the hype put me off if I’m honest. I then get weary incase I don’t like it, but I did! It was fabulous.

I saw this was going to Netflix so I thought I’d read it before watching it.

Neither disappointed me. This was so good I’ve been urging my daughter to watch it I think it’s something she would get her teeth into.

This kept me enthralled throughout and the twisty turns were what kept my brain ticking.

A superb piece of work.

Rating 3.5/5

I don’t think I’ve been this nervous about writing a review before, I think it’s because I know how difficult it’s going to be to share my feelings without giving anything away because I would hate to spoil the experience for anyone, so hopefully everything I’m saying makes sense. I have had this book on my TBR for a long time, I got it when it came out but there was so much hype around it that I was really put off reading it so I knew I had to leave it for a while, but now there’s a Netflix series and I really want to watch it but I knew I wanted to experience the book first, so here we are.

I have to say I was very intrigued from the start, there is definitely something about people getting themselves into sticky situations that is very hard to turn away from and I found that I couldn’t tear myself away from the pages because I could really empathise with both Lousie and Adele (at the start of the book anyway) and mostly I just wanted to see how this relationship would affect them. I really enjoyed these characters because of how morally ambiguous they both are at the start neither is doing the right thing but at that point neither seem like the bad guy either, of course, the cracks soon start to appear and I liked how devious and deceptive it became.

The plot was pitched perfectly for most of the book, the mistrust and suspicion kept things tense and addictive and every time I thought I could maybe see where the book was headed something new came up to throw me off balance. The pacing at times felt a bit uneven, it’s hard to say though whether this was because I was so desperate to know what was going to happen next that I had difficulty with the more introspective parts of the story but luckily the pull of the many mysteries woven into the story was enough to keep me going.

So now the bit that I’ve been dreading, when this book first came out part of the campaign was a hashtag #WTFthatending so I knew that there was going to be a bit of a twist at the end of the story and whilst I will wholeheartedly agree that I did not expect that ending and was really shocked by it, I must also admit to being a little disappointed. Personally, I feel like the ending kind of undermined the rest of the book, I wasn’t really that keen on the particular thread of the story that concluded everything, don’t get me wrong it is very original I don’t think I’ve read another thriller that has switched it up in such a way, but for me, it was just too much of a switch for the story I thought I was reading. Hopefully that all makes sense and hasn’t given anything important away because I really think this a book to be read with as little information as possible and even though the ending didn’t quite hit the mark for me it’s still a book I would recommend because I did highly enjoy it up until that point.

"Only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.
It’s said that the only people who really know what goes on in a marriage are the couple themselves. But what if even they don’t know the truth?

David and Adele seem like the ideal pair. He’s a successful psychiatrist, she is his picture-perfect wife who adores him. But why is he so controlling? And why is she keeping things hidden?
Louise, David’s new secretary, is intrigued. But as Louise gets closer to each of them, instead of finding answers she uncovers more puzzling questions. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise could never have guessed how wrong things really are and just how far someone might go to hide it."

I had such high hopes for this book, having been recommended it and read such great reviews. However, the story seemed a bit too complex and farfetched for me and I struggled to relate to the characters and ended up skim reading towards the ending, which was the best bit of the whole tedious book.

I read this in one sitting. I can’t really say much about the plot without potentially giving something away, but it is very twisty and turny and has a brilliant ending! My first Sarah Pinborough book but most certainly wont be my last.

When Louise goes on a night out and shares a kiss with a man in a bar, there's no harm done. It's not a problem. She's a single mum, working as a secretary, stuck in a bit of a rut. The kiss is a welcome distraction from the mundane aspects of her life.
When she goes in to work on the Monday she meets her new boss, David. It's the man from the bar. The married man from the bar. David tells her that the kiss was a huge mistake. And yet he can't seem to keep his eyes off Louise.
Louise also meets Adele, David's wife, who is new to the town and seemingly in need of a friend. Louise starts to have doubts about their picture-perfect marriage. Why is David so controlling? How can their relationship be this good if Adele is so scared of him?

Sarah Pinborough is a writer I've followed for many years. She's incredibly versatile, adept at writing in many style and genres, from horror to supernatural fiction to historical crime to young-adult fiction. She seems to manage to pull off a variety of techniques. Behind Her Eyes appears to be marketed as domestic noir, which is the track the first part of the novel seems to follow. But if you look at some of the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads the novel is quite divisive. I think this is because the book isn't quite as it first appears. Towards the end there's a shift in genres. I don't want to give any spoilers but it's fair to say that this is the reason why the ending is quite controversial. Like Stephen King managed to do with The Outsider, or Agatha Christie did with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Pinborough tries something equally as audacious with Behind Her Eyes. Its ending might leave you amazed, but equally you might feel a bit cheated by the blurring of genres.
This isn't Pinborough's fault - I've no doubt she had little to say in how the book was marketed - but the novel is well-written and intriguing and full of twists and turns. Whilst it's fair to say it isn't my favourite work of Sarah Pinborough's, there's still enough to recommend it. And I guarantee you'll be thinking about that ending for a long while.

An incredible read that drives you to an ending that you just won't expect. Talk about a rug pull! Sneaks up on you and then floors you in a moment, while leaving you wanting more.

I found it hard to know what to say about this book. First up, I'll say that thrillers aren't my normal genre, but I have (belatedly) started to jump on the thriller bandwagon and test the waters. This book came highly recommended by a friend, so I was looking forward to it. It's hard to say what I didn't enjoy without giving away too many spoilers, but let's just say I felt the author gave away too much, too soon. I also don't like books where much of the plot hinges on the main character being a bit stupid and naive. As for that ending? Sorry, I felt it let the whole book down. Well written, and I'd certainly try another book by this author, but this one wasn't for me.

Sarah Pinborough is a brilliant writer and Behind Her Eyes didn't disappoint - I'd been hearing about THAT ending and it was such a shocking revelation! Loved it. Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review.

Louise is a single mum who meets David on a rare night out. There is an instant attraction and the night ends with a kiss. In the first of many twists, David turns out to be Louise’s new boss and in another, his wife Adele and Louise become friends. On the surface, their marriage appears perfect but there is something rotten lurking below the surface. This read starts off as an intense psychological thriller but there are supernatural elements that you may love, or hate and the ending is ultimately unsatisfying. An OK read but not my favourite of my recent reads by any means.
