Florence Brown was a shy, introverted woman living in London, close to her sister Phoebe, a confident and attractive actress… 

Always feeling in the shadow of her sister’s optimism, Florence suffered badly from depression. 

A disagreement leads the sisters to fall out, resulting in Florence making a half-hearted attempt at suicide. 

Soon afterwards, the doctor demands she takes a ‘holiday’ at a nursing home.

But Florence soon runs away, finding herself in the company of Mrs. Jolly.

Vulnerable and lonely, Florence confides in the comforting Mrs Jolly, who promises to help her until she is better.

However, as weeks go by and there has been no trace of Florence in London, suspicions start to arise and it is left to Phoebe to piece the minimal clues together and work out exactly where her sister is.

And who she is really with…

With the help of Inspector Johnson, they must work together to try and decipher who this mysterious woman really is, but can Phoebe prove anything without getting stuck in the very trap she puts herself in?

Nancy Bodington was born in 1912. Under the pen name of Shelley Smith, she wrote 15 crime and detective novels between 1942 and 1978. Smith is best known for The Ballard of the Running Man and its 1963 film adaption starring Laurence Harvey and Lee Remick.
