Description

Undercover New York City police detective Lacey Burke grew up in the foster care system, bouncing from house to house without ever finding a permanent home. Perhaps that’s why she’s dating Tyler Hathaway. He may be a pompous Wall Street overachiever, but he’s wealthy and good-looking, and he can offer her the exotic travel and glamorous experiences she craves.

Recently, however, Lacey has begun to suspect that financial security may not be enough. She realizes she’s fallen in love with her good friend and work partner, Jason Reed. Jason’s a shameless womanizer, however, and Lacey doesn’t want to be just another conquest. Besides, ever since she spotted a mysterious person on the subway, she’s had something far more disturbing on her mind.

He wasn’t particularly distinctive or attractive, but right after Lacey saw him, the nightmares began. Somewhere in Lacey’s subconscious, a memory struggles to emerge from beneath the scars of trauma and pain—a memory tied to a fellow subway passenger Lacey would normally have forgotten immediately.

A fast-moving tale of suspense, repressed memories, and romantic tension, Beneath the Scars follows Lacey as she works both undercover and under the covers.

Beneath the Scars has a great heroine, Lacey Burke, an undercover detective with a great track record. She's tough and cannot back down from either a chase or a fight, but there are nightmares that keep her awake. Her experience in foster care made her lean on herself so much so that she has room for no one, especially her partner, Jason who is a major playboy.
I loved reading this and even though there's the thrill of trying to uncover the secrets in Lacey's past and who's been stalking her, I'd admit that this did not thrill me as much. I was expecting an action packed, fast paced chase and more than one or two goosebumps, but I got a great dose of friendship, trust and patience on Jason's side in pursuing Lacey, so I guess that was something.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and I'd add that I loved the cover and Jason's sister-Rachel.

This book grabs your attention at the very beginning with the reader getting a glimpse into the mind of the mystery man who will stalk Lacey throughout the story. This mystery/suspense element along with the romance makes for a great read.

Lacey had a rough childhood growing up in foster care and basically raising herself after turning 15. She gives in to the desire to experience extravagance and hitches herself to a wealthy and boring man. While she is blue collar and loving her job as an undercover police detective, her stuffy boyfriend thinks it is beneath her. Thankfully she dumps the creep.

Lacey has an amazing and sexy partner named Jason who is a standup guy but Lacey thinks he is a manwhore and maybe she is starting to have feelings for Jason. The mutual attraction between these two is awesome and I fell in love with these two as a couple. Their friends are fun and entertaining and a few are pigs.

After a subway encounter, Lacey begins having recurring nightmares. When the person in those nightmares is her real life stalker holding secrets to Lacey's past she is on a mission for answers. How does he know her? Why is he after her? What does he want? He is creepy but it makes for an interesting portion of the story.

Enjoyed this book and recommend.

I am reviewing a copy Of Beneath the Scars Through BooksgoSocial and Netgalley:

Lacey Burke is a New York City Undercover Police Detective. She had grown up in the Foster care system where she was shuffled from home to home. That is likely why she is dating pompous overachieving Tyler Hathaway. He may be Stuck On himself but he is wealthy and can offer her travel and other great adventures. The problem is she is starting to believe there is more to life than just financial security. She realizes she is falling in love with her good friend and work partner Jason Reed. Jason is a womanizer though and Lacey doesn't want to.

After seeing a man on the Subway the nightmares started. A me,pry trapped in her subconscious ties her to this man she'd likely have forgotten.

I give Beneath the Scars five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Beneath the Scars was a good read. I enjoyed the romance part of it but wished there was more to the mystery part of it. That being said the author has an interesting writing style & I thought the book flowed very nicely.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
