Such an inspirational and colourful edition to the series. From her youth to her bibliography, it’s perfect introduction for future lovers of Austin.
This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known women for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
I love Jane Austen, she's one of my favourite authors of all time. That's why I'm really happy this book exists, so that children can get to know her and then read her books when they grow up.
I am so glad this book series exists. The illustrations are gorgeous and they are such an easy and fun way to get very young children interested in history early on while inspiring them with stories of little people who have changed the world in their own ways. Jane Austen teaches young girls that they can do anything they want and become whoever they choose to be. Jane inspires young women to chase their passions and refuse to be limited by what society and others say they should be.
A succinct and interesting look at the woman behind some of the origins of romantic comedies and dramas.
This is a charming introduction to the life of Jane Austen. Jane grew up in a big family and her father gave her and her sister the same education boys received, which was unheard of in the time period. We learn the inspiration behind Jane's most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice and how she chose to live the life she wanted and not the one society expected of her.
Lovely illustrations enhance this brief biography, which will capture the attention of younger children. Another excellent addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series!
Thanks to Frances Lincoln Chuldren's Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a cute introduction to Austen for children. Not my favorite artwork of the series, but was written well.
I love this book! I can't imagine how beautiful the physical print will be and what a joy it would be to hold this in my hands as an Austen fan like most British readers.
A lovely little book for the little folk, a sad love story but how Austen weaved a success to herself after that is a real inspiration!
Another beautiful book by Little People, Big Dreams. I am a huge fan of Jane Austen's work but until now I didn't know anything about her life!
The Little People, Big Dreams books are aimed at 4-7 year olds and they are a fantastic way of introducing children to famous women. This book on Jane Austen is no exception. I loved the illustrations and the telling of the story.
There is also a couple of pages with more detailed information on Jane's life (possibly more suited to older readers) along with a list of recommendations for further reading.
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am so glad you have featured Jane Austen as part of your collection!
This is a wonderful children's book about the life of Jane Austen.
I was immediately drawn to this story, it's a great way to learn a little bit about her background. The book is very short and contains beautiful illustrations and concise descriptions, this title would make a great addition to any bookshelf.
At the end of the book there's a section with Jane Austen's short biography and timeline. Overall, I enjoyed it and recommend it to children and those young at heart.
Received ARC from the publisher via Netgalley
All of the books in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series are about well-known women, starting when they were girls and watching as they grow up. Each entry can inspire young readers. This story about Jane Austen is no exception. As always, the illustrations are charming and engaging. Jane is described within her family and credit is given to her father for believing that girls should be educated.Jane grows up loving to read and to make up plays. A romance that she experienced is explored and, of course, Jane grows up to be a writer who gives her heroines agency and the chance to make some of their own decisions. This book is another welcome addition in a good series! Thank you NetGalley and Quarto!
I’m obsessed with the LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG DREAMS series. This nonfiction children’s picturebook tells a brief biography of Jane Austen’s life and her inspiration to become a writer. Published June 5th, this book is a great addition to any classroom library.
To appear on three blogs in August 2018.
Jane Austen is part of a series aimed at very young readers, introducing children to famous women in history.
The illustrations are simple, and a little childlike, as though young Jane herself might be telling the story.
Austen’s works are far too advanced for readers in the target age group of this book, but it’s an interesting way to introduce girls and boys alike to the fact there were PLENTY of women in history who achievement many different things.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a NetGalley link for this title.
A short read packed with insightful tidbits about the life of one of the greatest writers in history. Jane Austen's novels are a staple read for people of all ages so this book is a wonderful way to get children acquainted with the author at a young age. I really liked that the book focused mainly on her personal life and not just her contributions to literature. The charming illustrations add a vintage vibe to the whole thing. I would love to gift this to my nieces or cousins and get them interested in reading.
his is from an advance review copy for which I thank the publisher.
This is another in a series aimed at making well-known historical people well-known to young children and as such is an admirable effort, if sometimes misguided as my previous review made clear. This one, however was a better offering. Austen needs no introduction which is presumably why this book gets right down to it!
It tells of her childhood (she was born only a hundred fifty miles or so from where I was born!), as a young girl in a large family of mostly boys, her listening in on her father's tutoring classes, and her love of reading. Jane Austen took up writing at an early age and made some interesting and amusing efforts at it. Her The History of England, which I read and reviewed last month as part of a review of her minor works, was hilarious.
The book, perhaps because it is aimed at children, mentions nothing of the tragedy of her death at such a young age (she had barely entered her forties), right in the middle of writing a new novel. But the story this does tell is positive, and empowering for your girls, and hopefully at least a few who read this will be moved to become writers themselves.
A delightful "history in a nutshell" story of Jane Austen's life. Written in friendly, easy-to-understand language and beautifully illustrated, this book is part of the "Little People, Big Dreams" series (translated from Spanish) which include Amelia Earhart, Georgia O'Keefe and Marie Curie.
I want them all!!
Another board book in the series of Little People Big Dreams. Very brief look at the life of Jane Austen, as a taste of what she was like.
The drawings are pleasant enough, and it follows her life fairly closely.

Good way, as always, to get kids interested in historic figures. Not all are women, but a great deal of them are.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This series is a huge hit with patrons at our library. The text is simple yet informative and the illustrations are beautiful. It is a great introduction to important figures in history for children.
This is a beautifully illustrated book telling the story of one of Britain's most loved authors. This is the perfect book for young children to learn about Jane Austen and how as a woman she achieved what was almost unheard of women in her time. This is part of a series of book which I would recommend for all children so they can see that there have been some amazing women in history who aren't also talked about.
Jane Austen is a well-known author. This little book gives beginning readers a look into the life of Jane Austen, and how her books really got started.
A timeline of her life is included at the back of the book, giving an in-depth look at her life.
Great for beginning readers and those who love Jane Austen!
I wish I’d had this lovely bio of JANE AUSTEN as a kid. The illustrations are so sweet and the story of Jane’s life so compelling that I would have read her books much earlier on. Highly recommended for children ... and for adults who want a refresher on the writer who has influenced so many others! 5/5

Another great read for little people by Isabel Sanchez Vegara. The way she puts important facts into the stories she writes are just enough for the understanding of children and Jane Austen was no different in that way.
Jane Austen is one of the queens of classic literature. Thankfully this book lives up to her legacy! In a way simple enough for young children to understand this book covers how Jane broke what was traditionally expected for women and wrote about women who did the same.
Another book to add to any child's shelf.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Austen is one of the latest in the Little People, Big Dreams series (I previously reviewed Ada Lovelace), and I'm glad to see the inclusion of one of Britain's most famous female authors. I'm not quite as enormous a fan as some, but I did enjoy Pride and Prejudice, and respect what Jane accomplished in her time.
This book introduces Jane Austen to young children, focusing on her large, close family, and emphasizing that Jane received an education that was more expansive than what many girls received in those days. We also see her love of reading and writing and her determination to be a good storyteller, and to use writing to make the best of a sad situation in her life.
Her life is covered fairly quickly since a book for young children can't be too wordy, but overall it is an interesting peek into the past and thorough introduction to a beloved author.
(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)
Such a lovely illustrated book! I think this is by far my favorite of the collection. Looking forward to future ones!
The Little People, Big Dreams books are biographies that teach children a few things about important women who dared to dream. Previous books have included such figures as Harriett Tubman, Ella Fitzgerald, and Anne Frank.
Jane Austen is a noted novelist who definitely deserves a place in this series. She grew up in a large family of 7 brothers and sisters. Her father, who must have sensed that his daughters might be interested in learning, invited Jane and her sister to join him in classes where he was teaching boys. This, of course, was not something girls did at the time since women were groomed to sew and do other tasks befitting ladies. But both of his daughters were eager to learn so they joined the classes.
Jane soon discovered her love for reading and writing. She wrote several novels including Pride and Prejudice, which the reader learns was based on something Jane experienced in her life.
As with the other books in this series, there are more facts at the end of the book for adults.
What Concerned Me: While I thoroughly enjoy the series, I'm not a fan of most of the illustrations.
What I Liked Most: Even though very few details are given in these books, they offer a smattering of information to acquaint children with notable historical figures. It's a great series for children and helps point out that many of these women were dreamers who dared to think outside the box.
I adored this book! I reviewed this book for Lincoln Children’s Books. It’s part of the Little People, Big Dreams series and tells about the life of Jane Austen. Her family’s love of literature was lovely and made for a very cozy book. It was also interesting to learn about the real-life stories behind some of her famous works. Her determination to make her own decisions influenced many of the female characters she wrote about.
A good read for young people, who want to learn more about the famous author. I think it's a great way to begin a child into biographical reads without overwhelming them too much. A definite must have for library collections needing to update their biography section for kids.
Wonderfully cute "Life of Jane Austen", instructive in a playful way and beautifully illustrated!
This is a lovely way to teach little girls, and boys too of course, about Jane Austen!
I loved how the author highlighted the most important aspects of Jane Austen's life in a way that is certain to capture young children's interest, with its emphasis on her family life, the story-telling and play-acting with siblings, the BFF older sister, the thwarted romance and all the brave heroines she wrote such amazing stories about! In secret... as A Lady.
The little details in the drawings, like the picture of the family home that hangs above the fireplace, the sour-looking portraits of Tom's uppity parents, or the portraits of six of Jane Austen's heroines, are a joy to discover. I do feel a bit sorry for Elinor Dashwood and Jane Bennet at being left out, though.
The author really did her homework, including Jane Austen's second, mentally impaired brother in the story while giving him a better lot in life, at the heart of his family, and she gently slips in that girls didn't used to have the same rights as boys.
I also adored the little time-jump at the end, as well as the short biography and portraits of the real Jane Austen.
I have now read three books in this series, and I adore them all! I adore the writing and the illustrations, and together they tell an amazing story that’s easy to understand and follow, while also staying true to Jane Austen.
I’ll highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys reading, especially if they enjoy books will illustrations.
Another great book in this series! Perfect birthday or Christmas presents for young people. I love the illustrations
I adore Jane Austen's work and I believe that the sooner kids know about her, the better. This little book is a perfect introduction to her life and novels.
You have no idea how happy I am that the Little People, Big Dreams series exists! This is my second read from the line-up after Emmeline Pankhurst, and it was equally endearing. These books stand out with their diverse cast of feminist role models, and I'm glad that Miss Austen is being included - although I'm afraid that children won't get easily excited by the life of an author they have yet to read a single novel of.
Very readable and recommended for little bookworm girls especially. Did you know Jane fell in love and he left her for a rich girl?! What a jerk! ...anyway, everyone loves Jane Austen, so let's start them young.
Another beautiful book in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I’m a big Jane Austen fan and this is a great book to help introduce her and her writing to children. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing simplistic enough to capture a child’s imagination. My favourite of the series so far!
I loved this book! The text is simple, clear, and would be easy for an early elementary grade reader to read to themselves or with a little help from a parent. The illustrations are wonderful! They are warm and accessible and drew me in from the first page. Even though my daughter is a little old for this book, I am going to share it with her because she will still enjoy reading it. I wish I had discovered this series a few years ago!
Beautiful book! Another must-have from the series. Delicate and colorful illustrations accompanied by a story that flows easily. I can't wait to buy a physical copy of this book!
Thanks to Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A lovely little book about Jane Austen. Perfect for young readers, and older Austen fans. A great addition to the Little People series.
I absolutely love seeing book series' for children about really important grown ups. It is great for them to have people who have done something extraordinary to look up to and aspire to be like. One of my favorite author's of all time, Jane Austen, is a great example of one of those people and one of the subjects of the Little People BIG DREAMS series. The book tells us about Ms. Austen's early life, how she became interested in writing, the inspiration for her book Pride and Prejudice and other facts about her. The illustrations are gorgeous and really add to the appeal of the book. There is also a timeline at the end that I think really brings the whole thing together. I recommend this book to any kid who likes to learn about history and people from history or to any Jane Austen fan.
A wonderful little overview of Jane Austen's life story for kids. Of course, it just grazes the surface, but it's a good introduction for anybody who wants to bring Austen to the younger generation. (My one question, where is Elinor's portrait? They have Marianne, but not Elinor??)
This Little People, Big World series is outstanding! I have seen a few Littens on Litsy reviewing these books, and I simply knew I had to check them out. Sadly, my library doesn't have any of the collection... so you can imagine how excited I was to see this book on NetGalley. I have read about 6 others on NetGalley, and I simply adore them. Jane Austen has always been a favourite of mine, but seeing this written for children was delightful. I can see this being an asset in classrooms all over the world. The books are short, sweet, and beautifully illustrated. They are colorful, and exciting and they make learning fun for young children. I hope I can find the whole collection for my nieces and nephews. And definitely a copy of this one for myself!
A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I truly appreciate it!
This addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series is a lovely chronicle of the life of Jane Austen written for young children. It touches on how writing was not considered a lady-like pursuit but that Jane followed her passion for writing, against all odds becoming a successful author who is today considered one of the greats. The lovely message from this book is that ‘Jane kept writing about young women, who were brave enough to make their own choices and who never gave up.’ A very positive sentiment for young readers to embrace.
This is a great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series. It's a fresh look at young Jane Austen and how she came to be one of the most beloved novelists of all time. Children and parents will enjoy the vibrant art and her inspiring story.
This edition of the “Little People, Big Dreams” series features one of England’s most famous authors.
As always in these books, I learn things too, for example that she came from a family of 8. Don’t know why I find that surprising, but I do. Luckily her father, who was a tutor, let her and her sister attend the classes, something rare for girls in those days.
Big new fact: Pride and Prejudice came from a real incident in her life.
Even though I’ve never been a fan of her works, this served to humanize her a bit.
As always, the book ends with a timeline and repeated text, with photos instead of artwork.
3.5 pushed up to 4/5
We just adore these books, and as a lover of Austen books this was a particular delight to share with my kids! Although the words are excellent - clear and concise, it's the illustration I most admire. Read them all x
I received this copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Little People, Big Dreams: Jane Austen is a sweet introduction to the life of author Jane Austen. I adore the Little People, Big Dreams series; they do an excellent job of introducing historical figures to young readers. The illustrations are delightful. While Austen's life is shared in the form of a story, there are few pages at the end discussing her in more detail.
Thank you Quatro Publishing and Net Galley for the free review copy. I love biographies for children, and this series by Isabel Sanchez Vegara is great. Fans of Jane Austen will love this for their kids! Jane Austen's story is presented in a clear way for young readers. I think these are great books for kids who have an interest in nonfiction. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is another brilliant addition to this series – even as an adult I look out for the next book in the series being released. I love the images in this series and this is a delightful introduction to Jane Austen.
They are excellent introductions to some of the well-known, and less well-known, characters that have had a great impact in our lives through a variety of subjects such as literature, women’s rights and science.
5 stars from me for this one – a delightful read and one I will be highly recommending!!
Lovely way to get children to know famous female writers such as Jane Austen. This book is a delight and really sweet.
Another fantastic offering in the Little People Big Dreams series. I’ll be recommending this interesting introduction to Jane Austen to our older KS2 children at school as they’re introduced to classical authors through their English lessons. I think it will help to provide context to what they are reading in an accessible and interesting way.
Easy and fun way to learn about people in history. Great illistrations. Kids will love to learn by reading this book. Would recommend.
Great picture book for children with simple words for them to understand. I love this series and will be checkin other books.
Little People, Big Dreams is a series of nonfiction children’s books focused on famous women, past and present. Jane Austen is the first I’ve read in this series and it is absolutely wonderful! The illustrations are beyond charming and the information is pitch perfect for young children. It is essentially a quick biography, covering Jane’s early childhood and education, and explaining how it is that she came to be one of the most famous writers of all time. Also discussed is some of the experiences that influenced her stories. And, it addresses how different the world was for girls back then.
What can I say? Children’s books that highlight women who are historically significant? Outstanding illustrations? And in this case, Jane Austen, who is one of my particular favorites? Wins all around! I will certainly be buying a print copy of this book to share with my children.
Note: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I pride myself on writing fair and honest reviews.
I just love this series. All the books are so sweet and do a great job of breaking down the lives for young readers/listeners.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book, which I voluntarily chose to review.
This book is a perfect way to teach children about Jane Austen. It is an abridged version of this remarkable British author's life that kids can easily understand.
Little Jane was born into a large family with seven brothers and sisters. She observes that girls are not given the same privileges as boys and inside of her she feels that is unfair. Her father includes her and her sister in classes that he teaches to the sons of wealthy men at their home. It is there that Jane falls deeply in love with books and choses to read over play with her dolls. She spends endless hours pouring through books in her parent's library.
She and her siblings often write and perform their own plays and every night around the fireplace the family sits happily and listens to Jane's stories that she writes. As an adult she writes books that inspired young women to be independent and think for themselves. Encouraging them to make their own decisions about their lives and not depend on others. Her novels are read and loved by all and she writes them anonymously .... "By a Lady." Only her family members and a few close friends know she is the true author. Her brother, Henry, finally reveals her identity to the public after her death.
The illustrations are sweet and the author includes extra facts at the back of the book about this inspiring writer. I highly recommend this book and the whole series.
This series from Frances Lincoln Children's Books is absolutely wonderful! Featuring famous women from history we are treated to the life, challenges and successes of one woman per book in the Little People, Big Dreams series. This edition is #11 in the series and it features Jane Austen. How perfect for a book to be about Jane; given that she gave us some of the most beloved stories ever.
I like how the drawings and words are sophisticated enough without being too difficult for even a 4-year-old to enjoy when read to. It's particularly great that the book points out how Austen was not allowed to do the things her brothers did and did not put her name on her books. I think the average little girl will ask why to the reader, so be prepared to answer why Jane didn't use her real name.
Overall this is a lovely little book. And I look forward to more of the books in this series including those on Lucy Maud Montgomery, Marie Curie or Amelia Earhart. There are so few women in history that our little girls can truly look up to, and it can be difficult for children to understand how different the world was before, or even is now depending on the ethnicity, race, class, etc. that the child is born into. These books are an excellent way to inspire children to be anything they want to be; even if someone tries to tell them they can't.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
New in the Little People, Big Dreams series, discover the incredible life of Jane Austen. The text and illustrations show Jane as a child standing and watching her brothers while she and her sister have to help her mother. The author, Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s makes the point that Jane Austen is lucky that her father educated her with the boys he taught so she was able to read and write. She told and wrote stories which she and her siblings acted out or listened to her read long into the evening. Her first novel, "Pride and Prejudice" was based upon an actual situation in her own life, but with a happier ending. This is a child friendly biography that shows a young woman striving to achieve her dream. It is also important to stress that she wrote about strong and determined women at a time that this trait was looked down on. This book could be used to teach young children how to write a biography, show that it is important to have a dream and strive to achieve it as well as to introduce one of the greatest authors of our time to a new generation. A good book for a school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book to read via netgalley. The rating, opinions and ideas stated are my own.
My review appears on Weekend Notes. Thanks to the publishers for sharing this title. It's a great series for kids.
Another in this fantastic series teaching both kids and adults alike about the many amazing women out there, and that you should always be willing to chase your dreams. Also, an author I love and especially around the 100 year anniversary of her death it’s lovely to see so many new people introduced to her and her work.
