An RNA Romantic Novel Award nominee.

From shipwreck and heartbreak to treachery and war: can their love survive?

Abandoned as a baby and raised in a remote lighthouse off the wild Northumberland coast, Alice Fairchild has always dreamed of adventure. When a fierce storm wrecks a ship nearby, she risks everything in an act of bravery that alters the course of her life.

Aboard the doomed vessel is the handsome John Sinclair, a Scottish soldier on his way to India. The connection between them is instant, but soon fate intervenes and leaves Alice heartbroken and alone. Determined to take charge of her destiny but secretly hoping her path will cross again with John’s, she too makes a new start in colonial India.

Life there is colourful and exotic, but beneath the bright facade is an undercurrent of violence, and when the British invade Afghanistan, Alice is caught up in the dangerous campaign. When at last she hears news of John, she is torn between two very different lives. But will she follow her head or her heart?

If you haven’t read anything by this author than you have been missing out. She can sweep me away to the lush jungles of India or the wild beauty of 19th century England better than any other writer I know. Alice has always longed for adventure, her life has consisted of a very small world on the Northumberland coast. When a ship is wrecked during a storm, Alice finds herself falling in love with survivor, John Sinclair, a soldier who was traveling to India. When John eventually leaves for India, Alice follows, hoping to reawaken their bond. But war comes to the region, and Alice’s plans are quickly altered as she has to decide what matters most to her. Allow yourself to be swept away with this gorgeous story

Thank you NetGalley and AmazonCrossing UK for the eARC.
As a rule I don't read romance novels, but as the setting promised visits to England, India, and even Afghanistan, I couldn't resist. And I was definitely well rewarded.
Alice and John fall in love after she rescues him from his shipwreck and helps him recover. The time is the early 1800's and the story continues through the next 30 or so years.
Unfortunately the two lovers have so many spanners thrown into their lives that their love seems doomed to fail. In the meantime we learn much about the history of India in those days and the England's East India Company's foreys into Afganistan. I loved that.
Well written and researched, with plenty of adventure, I was pleasantly surprised at my enjoyment of this book. I strongly recommend it!

A really interesting read this one! Influenced and inspired by the author’s ancestors, mixed in with historical figures in the East India Tea Company, Grace Darling and Afghan war lords and it’s quite the cast! The author has clearly done her research and it’s an ambitious read but one I think she largely pulls off (just a small thing in the grand scheme of things but the ending seemed a bit rushed)

The novel spans around 40 years so there’s a lot to get your readers’ teeth into. Alice and her soldiers are well developed and their adventures exciting and well written. The writing actually matches the nature of the story well with its flowing currents, lyrical scenes and full of fascinating facts. It’s very cinematic in places and the story of Afghanistan and the British role in it was particularly enlightening. I take my hat off to the author for doing this without making the novel feel heavy or like a history book. Quite the skill that must be!

The story is vast and complex yet easy to read. I definitely feel more intelligent having read this as I feel I got a glimpse into the history of the time which was an amazing feeling.

Definately got this author on my radar now!

An author to rival Dinah Jeffries for fact and atmosphere , we go on an emotional and physical journey that leaves you feeling worn out just sitting reading about it As usual we have characters we love and those we dislike. I am sure that a lot of what our characters endured was for real and probably worse but if it wasn't for them would our history be any different? Well worth a read.
