Description
‘The devil walks amongst us. You can’t see, hear or smell him but you can sense his presence and when you do, run...’
Why choose love? Instead choose a credit card attached to a gullible man who will pay for the shoes, lunches, the mansion in the country and the skilled surgeon to scrub at the expiry date of your youth membership card.
Olivia Hopkins chose this life but bore the consequences of a brutal, lonely and loveless marriage to a man who chose money and other women over his wife.
From the outside Olivia was a woman society admired but the truth is often hidden behind the lawyer who can shout the loudest and distort the appearance of the most depraved of life choices. The Society Game is the first novel in the series.
A Note From the Publisher

The Society Game is a story about choices. Olivia married for money. Is it better to marry for love or money? Olivia tells her story in letters written to her nephew. I think that's a weird choice by the author writing to a nephew. The writing is good and unfolds at a good pace. It's a thought provoking look at what's behind the big house, fancy car and botox facade. Society certainly values money and social standing seemingly above all else. Olivia made a choice and lived with the consequences. It's a good read overall with an important message. I recommend for fans of drama and some mystery. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
What happens when money overshadows love? Can it make everything better or is it the root of evil? This was a book that was full of some very interesting twists and unexpected developments. thank you for allowing me to read this book NetGalley.
I found this interesting and intriguing but not compulsive. Olivia is a vibrant young girl who is a romantic, shallow and insecure. She thinks wealth is the answer to everything and is willing to sacrifice everything to attain and keep it. She has great support from her sister and close friends but ultimately has to decide what is most important to her. The writer takes a novel approach by unfolding the story using a few different storytellers - a letter, the first person and her sister. The book raises questions around what is happiness and the impact of abusive relationships. I made me think but I'm not sure this is the kind of book you can love. I also felt the title was a bit misleading. This was no game.
I requested this book from NetGallery and was approved for a copy of the book. After reading the blurb, I thought it would be a very different kind of thriller that I am use to reading. The first chapter you are introduced to Jason and he is receiving letters from his Aunt Olive. The story is about Olive explaining her life from when she was young to the present. I really liked the idea of Jason reading the letter then having conversations with his mum and dad to clarified what happened. As there are always two sides to every story.
All characters were very likeable and I enjoyed listening to the stories that was going to be told. The writing from the author was written well and easy flowing and easy to reading.
I enjoyed reading the story and learning about Olives life but there wasn't anything major happening that wanted me to keep reading. But I did finish the book and was a bit surprised by the outcome of the situation. In my opinion it had a very important message to portray but to me it was just a safe and easy story to read and get your head around.
The Society Game opens with a letter from Aunt to Nephew which I found intriguing and although language wasn't quite what I was expecting I'm glad I continued. (Language does get better it's just a bit more flowery to begin with!) An absolutely captivating tale of ones place in the world, I thought this was very thought provoking and although I wasn't very interested in Jason I look forward to the next book. 4.5/5
Olivia Hopkins and her sister have chosen different lives as adults. Olivia married for money and all it could give her. Which is better, to marry for love or money? It is a decision made by many in life. Olivia wrote letters to her nephew to have someone to be close to but in the end she lived a very lonely life. This book gives some incite into relationships that you may not normally see.
Wow - surprise after surprise! A bit of a slower start, but then I couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for the rest of the books in the series - I need more!!!!
This book is tense, it’s well written with strong characters. It keeps you guessing at what is going to happen next. Totally unpredictable with twists and turns.
Fancy a book that’s full of tension then this is the one for you.
Thank you to both NetGalley and Troubadour Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest unbiased review
I have to say the description of this novel does not fully depict the actual story, but I was pleasantly pleased with it. The beginning was slow and hard to navigate as the idea of an aunt writing to her nephew regarding her life was a bit odd at first. The jumping back and forth and trying to understand the relationship between the too was difficult. As the story played out, I enjoyed learning of Aunt Olivia's life. I think the book could have just focused on that without the element of the nephew.
I did enjoy reading about the life of Olivia and the different stages of her life, both for better and for worse..
Thank you Netgalley!
I really enjoyed this book and loved the way it was written out in letters between Olive and Jason, Lots of twists and turns too! Can't wait to read the follow up !
The plot unfolds as a series of letters between an aunt (Olive) and her nephew (Jason) which I found to be an interesting format. What is slowly revealed is Olive’s life and how she came to regret the choices she made. A position in Society that costs far too much in terms of happiness and the shallowness associated with that. Thought provoking and intriguing. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
This was a wonderful read! Its well written and I found the format of letters from an Aunt to her Nephew to be intriguing. While I didn’t agree with the choices that Olivia made and she most definitely had her flaws she was a character that I found interesting and relatable. This book is all about how a person’s choices can impact their entire life and what can happen when you choose money over love. All of the characters were well written and the story kept me entertained until the very end.
A great tense read! Full of gripping moments and twists and turns.
The story was exciting to read and the characters were fleshed out well.
When I saw the title of this book, I was immediately intrigued. I'd just watched MOLLY'S GAME and automatically thought it'd be something similar. Not exactly, but I was positively surprised.
The description of the book said, "novel which explores how our society shapes who we are and the decisions we make." And even though that sounds like almost every single women's fiction book these days, THE SOCIETY GAME has an addictive angle to it.
The writing is good. Really good. For a while, I couldn't even understand where it was going but it flows so well, you feel like you just want to trust your imagination into Lanfermeijer's words and go along with it.
I wouldn't exactly call it gripping. More like thought-provoking and captivating. And it really makes you wonder what's behind those forever perfect plastic smiles you see on Facebook or else sometimes.
Big thanks to the author for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was captivated by this book and the letters the aunt sent to her nephew. It truly represents what is important despite the facade she presented to society. Incredible read.
This was a great kickoff to a new series! I enjoyed this, as it was a quick read that had tons of twists! I cannot wait to see what is in store for these characters as the series progresses!
This was a wonderful read!
well written . intriguing. While many would not agree with decisions that Olivia made you can't help but find her relatable.
It is a very good insight into the fact that choices have consequences and can impact your whole life!
the book was well written and gripping.
i cannot wait to see what this author does next.
thankyou net galley for allowing me to read
The Society Game is a novel about Olivia and the choices she makes. Olivia chose money over love... good or bad, we learn more about Olivia as the story. It is well written and flows at a good pace. It’s a suspenseful novel and I’ll definitely read the next in the series.
Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to read and review NetGalley and Troubadour Publishing.
Truthfully I read this book a while ago and had to go back and skim the ending to remind myself of the story. I liked the way the story was told using the letters from Olive but the character of Olive was so frustrating it made it hard to read this book.
A well written story of a society wife told in the letters she sends to her nephew, while a little slow at first it is well worth reading the ending may surprise you
Firstly, I have to say that I love the format of this book. A series of letters between Aunt Oliva and her nephew, Jason, is such a clever way to tell the story. I love Olivia's character. Although I did not agree with some of the choices that Olivia made, still, I enjoyed reading about her life. I found that it is thought-provoking.
Olive proves that money can't buy happiness, a lesson she learns the hard way in The Society Game. This novel follows Olive through her twenties, thirties, and forties as she attempts to find her way in the world. Perhaps the saddest aspect of the novel is the abuse she suffers at the hands of her wealthy husband Mark and her inability to habe a baby. Overall, a great book.
