Going vegan is not something I've really ever considered - I love cheese and eggs far too much. I have considered going vegetarian (very recently) but I thought I'd give this book a chance.
On first glance I thought this was just going to be a meal plan but in fact this book is hugely informative. We receive insight into the author's transition from a fast-food loving individual to a vegan - partaking in snippets of her journey. And Kim hasn't tried to make it sound all glamorous, in actual fact this book is very straight to the point about what you can expect when you make the change. Changes your body goes through and hints and tips she's picked up from her own experience and her fellow vegans.
There is also really useful information about lots of the "fancy" foods you're likely to eat more often if you make the change; when they're best to eat, how to store them, and of course, how to cook and prepare them.
I'm still not sure I'd go vegan any time soon but this book has shone light on an otherwise unfamiliar subject for me, and I will without doubt be trying some of these recipes in the meal plan as they sound and look delicious.
The recipes themselves appear to be very easy to follow too, not assuming any culinary school level knowledge!
Overall very impressed with this book - it's not too long the intro being a good length and a good level of detail. And it's split nicely too into sections of food groups so you can refer back to particular areas with ease.
Ok I’ll be honest turning Vegan was not on my list of things to do in the new year but this book has finally offered me some tasty sounding foods which also happen to be vegan and I’m actually excited to try this. I already don’t eat much meat and prefer vegetarian food but though vegan was a step too far however this book is a fearless and simple plan to introduce vegan meals into your life. I loved the fact a lot of the meals could be prepared before time and stored so meal time becomes easy. I’m excited to try these meals and be persuaded that vegan is not too extreme after all.
I was attracted to this book as my niece has recently turned to veganism and I thought I'd be inspired. It is a good basic, 'get one started', book on the subject and probably aimed more at the young as it has a lot of very basic information that many of us older generation adhere to as a matter of choice anyway, fresh, natural, seasonal ingredients cooked from scratch, etc. It is obviously intended to 'kick start' anyone to a more healthy lifestyle with a lot of raw natural ingredients and 'bowls' with pulses and fresh veg but also short of time during the week. Some of the recipes involve advance preparation with later reheating so each week would have a lot of meals based on the couple of things prepped in advance and used later in the week. Some of these things I would be reluctant to do certainly from a flavour point of view (reheated potato takes on a very weird flavour unless (dare I say it) unhealthily fried!). I know there is flexibility and this is encouraged, otherwise the menus using the same base ingredients could get repetitive within that week. Freezing would be good rather than sitting in a fridge most of which don't operate at cool enough temperatures!
I am slightly uncomfortable with the use of liquid smoke, I have come across this product as I was involved for several years in the food industry but not that familiar but my impression it is a chemical induced flavouring.
Despite everything it is an excellent book for somebody interested in this diet and a cleaner eating plan, whether for everyday or just an occasional 'detox'. There is a section on meditation plus other lifestyle choices. I would actually buy this book for my nieces's up and coming birthday as it would be right up her street and anything that get those reliant on 'ready meals' and processed foods in general is a good thing for us all. I personally would dip in and out or when my niece comes to stay. I, incidentally, did a wonderful vegan chocolate cake (OK unhealthy as baked and sweet) for her and it went down a storm.
Unfortunately, by catching the flu just before New Year's and guzzling down buckets of chicken soup in attempts of making me feel a little more alive, the start of Veganuary completely passed me by. Which is a shame because, the goal of going vegan for an entire month is an... intimidating one, to say the least (even for a person, like me, whose meals are predominantly vegan/vegetarian), and I always feel as though that a confirmed, easily-definable start-date make those challenges a hell of a lot easier.
However abritrary that start-date might be.
But, books like Kim-Julie Hansen's Vegan Reset: The 28-Day Plan to Kickstart Your Healthy Lifestyle really take the intimidation out of such a massive diet overhaul - they're approachable, non-judgemental and in this one in particular, a myriad of dishes are included that are easily-prepared and which contain ingredients that, for a majority of the population, are easily-sourced. And, isn't that normally where vegan cookbooks like this fail? That, by incorporating ingredients that can only be found by getting on a plane and picking the produce yourself, people who are considering veganism as an option, instead are alienated and turned-off by the diet's perceieved-inaccessibility.
I, for one, am definitely going to be leaving this book with a few pointers (black bean tacos? Yes please) and, even though Veganuary has already been a write-off, the rest of my 2019 is looking a little more hopeful.
I am not even close to being a vegetarian, let alone a vegan; but I was interested to see how this concept would fit in with my life. The author makes it easy to understand why this was a good choice for her, and has made me realise that I need to add more colour to my diet, the pictures of the various meals look wonderful. So, while I won’t be converted to the vegan way any time soon I will definitely be adding a lot more variety to my diet, probably using some of the recipes in this book. And if I am healthier as a result ... who knows?
If you are thinking of beginning a vegan lifestyle but don’t know where to start, this is the book for you. A great book for beginners as it details what to buy, how to store it and how to prepare it, to make your vegan week ahead as effortless as possible.
This looks like a fabulous book for those interested in going Vegan or if you just want to eat a few more veggies. Filled with not just recipes but weekly meal plans and shopping lists, how to's, what to keep stocked in your cupboards and all things mindfulness, exercise and focusing on what we put in our bodies. This taster shows that the book is an all-rounder with information about mind, body and food.
I'd been meaning to change my diet for a while and not just because I've learned I have gallstones. Eating more healthily really is a priority for me and has become one of my New Years Resolutions! I must say that the recipes in this book look super yummy and feature a myriad of items I would never have thought were possible to eat on a vegan diet. It is a simple, easy to follow guide that is accessible to everyone, especially those who have no prior experience of the lifestyle and don't know where or how to start.
This is the definitive guide to plant-based living and it doesn't stop at just providing the recipes; it also gives helpful information on where to purchase food economically, helpful hints and tips on advance preparation (as this is generally the part that takes up the most time and not the actual cooking) and meal plans help you plan in advance what you are going to eat. Of course, this authority on the plant-based lifestyle doesn't necessarily only belong in the library of someone with plans to be vegan, as it would also be a go-to resource for those looking to add more fruit and vegetables to their diet. New year, new you! I know I will be making extra-large portions of the Blueberry-Banana ice-cream - yum - and there are plenty of other beautiful sounding dishes to try, the cherry pancakes also sound incredible! Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Bluebird for a copy.
My download only covers up to halfway through the meal plan, but that's enough for me to know this is a fascinating book. It not only deals with vegan meals, it goes into lifestyle changes like mediation as well, and it does it without being preachy. The meal plans and recipes are detailed without being too overly pedantic, and there's plenty of options for changes and substitutions depending on taste, price and what's available at the time. Perfect for anyone thinking of trying the lifestyle or anyone who's already a vegan and is looking for new ideas and recipes. A brilliant read.
I can honestly say I’ve never read such an enthralling cook book in my life.
The author recounts on what turned her to a vegan lifestyle and I can see why they did .
There is so much detail on what a vegan diet is all about and I really had in the back of my head that being a vegan would just be eating fruit and vegetables.....boring.....no it’s not this way of eating is so colourful and the recipes in this plan sound absolutely amazing .
I’m definitely going to give this plan a try.
Thankyou.
A healthy and very organised gude to trying vegan food, with tasty meal ideas and guides on how to prepare and save fruit and vegetables.
I appreciate how the author has considered budgets and provided a section on how to live a cost effective plant based lifestyle. I will definitely be giving some of the meals in the plan a try!
I got this book and was excited to read it straight away. I’m coeliac and wondered if I would be able to follow this plan easily. The answer is yes I can. I love the way gluten free options are given and discussed all the way through, this is really refreshing for me.
The book is a true lifestyle plan not just a change in diet and it has meditation tips, what is best for you, moving, exercise etc.
You get a shopping list each week which helps you organise and again there are lots of hints and tips. Each day is set out with a menu and how to make each course. There is also a quote at the start of each day which is very positive and can help you focus on the day ahead. At the end of each week there are questions asking you to think about any changes with how you felt from the change in diet etc..
I think you have to be a little organised and plan some of the meals at the beginning of the week however you do have all the information you need to do this. I certainly feel like it’s something I could keep up once I had followed the full 28 days but I do think it would take some focus at the beginning.
Great book to start the new year.
I am by no means close to being a vegan nor a vegetarian but a book that’s laid out like this would certainly encourage me to adopt more vegan friendly recipes into my lifestyle.
This is not a patronising book in any way but a gentle lifestyle book that encourages a whole lifestyle change and addresses other methods in life such as meditation and journaling which fits in with a life reset.
The shopping lists and storage guides were a great help. There’s definitely some recipes I will try.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the pleasure of an arc in exchange for my honest review.
