"Work it, girl" is a new series of empowering biographies featuring modern women.
These biographies are short yet detailed: that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about J.K. Rowling, one of most influential women in the literary (and not only) world.
Here, we follow her life since she was a little avid reader 'till her success thanks to the "Harry Potter"series.
I'm a potterhead and I'll always be, but I have to admit that I knew little about Rowling's life. So, this book was definetely a good way to know more about this incredible way in an entertaining way thanks to the writing style and the amazing illustrations.
Despite of all the difficulties, she never gave up and kept fighting for her dream to become a writer. I think reading about her resilience may have a good influence on kids, and also adults.

"It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be".

I love how women's histories are being made available to young readers. When I was in sixth grade I ate through the biography section of our small school library. (It was two book cases, and I must have read nearly every one of those books. It is so inspiring to find out where people came from.

This book is marvelous. Short chapters. Large pictures, interspersed with things that happened to her in her life.

A delightful look at JK Rowlings life. Very easy, and a delight to read.

I really love the idea and purpose behind the book J. K. Rowling by Caroline Moss and illustrated by Sinam Erkas. It's an illustrated biography detailing pieces of J. K. Rowling's life and her journey toward becoming a published author and one of the most influential people in the world. Her words have reached billions and her story is deeply loved by a great many people. And Rowling began her journey much like many others had, as a young person with a love of books and a love for writing. Achieving her dream was not something that was presented to her nor was it easily achieved. But the big takeaway from this small children's chapter book is the fact that it tells young writers to never give up on their dreams of becoming an author. And, even more, it sends the message that, if you work at your dream and don't let hardships keep you from it, you can achieve great things. And I think this is an important thing for kids to realize. Dreams don't land in everyone's laps and it really does come down to putting in the time and the effort to get yourself there.

One of the things I loved about this book was that it included quotes from J. K. Rowling, herself. Peppered throughout the illustrations and in between the pages of text are large print quotes from interviews and the Harry Potter novels themselves. I think this is an incredible biography for kids to read, especially as it goes over the life and achievements of a woman who is likely to be or have been an incredible influence on their lives due to the widespread popularity of Harry Potter. It's a great way to motivate young writers and introduce the concept of biographies to younger kids. And while I would never say that J. K. Rowling is a perfect person and I am very aware of some of the faults for which she has been criticized, I do deeply appreciate this book and what it offers to young writers and aspiring authors.

The Harry Potter books are one of the most enduring series in my Media Center. This creative and informative biography will certainly enhance it. We learn of the hardships Rowling encountered in her life but the message is certainly clear about how to turn those disadvantages into advantages. The qualities of perseverance and dedication to her craft prevailed.
The illustrations are unique and beautifully presented. The "10 Key Lessons" section at the book's conclusion provide an oversight of everything that is important to Rowling's life. I especially found the "Answer Questions" useful and inviting. Moss also provided a section on "Further Reading" which will be appreciated by those numerous readers wanting to learn even more.
This is a wonderful biography that will undoubtedly delight Harry Potter fans.

I really enjoyed this book, I believe it's more oriented to teens than children. I loved how they told Joanne's story and felt very inspiring.
I love Harry Potter, so I wasn't unaware of Joanne struggles, but having this book and the ilustrationa made it a really nice tribute.
I was able to learn about her Charity's which was something I didn't know.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this.

I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy of J.K. Rowling by Caroline Moss today. Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for the opportunity to read and review this book.

J.K. Rowling is part of a new series called, "Work It, Girl", which highlights influential and trailblazing women. I had the extreme pleasure to read this edition and I cannot say enough good things about it. This would be a perfect book for any young reader (fan of Harry Potter or not). This biography had fabulous illustrations and graphic designs, which highlighted influential quotes from Jo.

The lessons Jo's life have in it are what our children need to hear. Our lives will not be perfect (no matter how hard we try) and failure is inevitable. It is what we do with that failure that sets us apart and teaches us just who we can be. Another valuable lesson taught is to be humble and make sure to give back to our communities and causes we believe in once we are able to.

I can't wait to buy this for my daughter and nieces to add to their libraries!

I particularly liked this book as it is written with a good depth of detail which is ideal for upper KS2 classes. The chaptered format makes it a longer, more engaging read and the papercut style of illustrations are visually attractive too.

The information within this book is detailed and well set out, but it is the illustrations that truly bring this book to life and make it a must have for any young one’s shelf.
I also loved the top advice and the questions to get young writers thinking about their future dreams.

This short and inspiring biography of JK Rowling, the writer who made kids fall in love with reading again, is well-researched and beautifully illustrated in an original paper-cut style. It gave me a much better idea of the writer’s background, tenacity, determination and love of writing. I didn’t know about her mother’s MS illness and the profound effect it must have had on her family. I loved her words on the importance of failure which can help you strip away the inessential. I think a lot of children will also relate to her story of not being accepted into the university of her choice due to her less than perfect academic record.
The colour scheme and the illustrations in this book are just amazing and are so in tune with the text. I also loved the way JK Rowling’s quotes became marvellous word art.
Fans of Harry Potter will, no doubt, be delighted, but I think this book has some valuable life lessons to offer to every reader.
My favourite quote from this book: We do not need magic to change our world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves.

I have recently been re-reading the Harry Potter books and have again been struck by how talented J K Rowling is. Below is a small part of my recent post on the novels:

Let me just say that J K Rowling rightly deserves her place in children's literature. She cleverly tells a variation on a boarding school story, a classic quest tale, an orphan's story, a story about friendship and a tale about the importance of good trying to overcome evil.

Having just re-immersed myself in this world, I was thrilled to receive an e-galley of a children's title that tells J K Rowling's own story. The book is interspersed with her quotes and these add resonance to the text. The illustrations are bold and suit the title.

Young readers will learn about young Jo Rowling's struggles. Her mother was sick, she did not get along well with her father, she had difficulty "reaching her potential" at school and faced both joy (having a daughter) and struggle (a divorce, financial hardship). The reader learns as well that Jo Rowling liked to tell stories and that books were important to her. They will see how she kept on writing as Harry's story was vividly clear to her and she needed to get it down.

Young readers will learn about J K Rowling's persistence and eventual success. They will see too how she has used part of her wealth to help others. There is a section at the end of the book to encourage young people to write.

All in all, this is a promising entry in a promising new series. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read. All opinions are my own.

Vibrant and inspiring mini biography on JK Rowling. It is just the right balance of text and visual design for the age range.

Informative children’s book about the famous author J.K. Rowling.

She’s known for her Harry Potter series and her retconning information about them.

However, she’s still pretty famous and this is an adorable book containing information to hopefully inspire young readers to writers.. or very least help them with a report on a famous writer.

Definitely recommend for the classroom library! The artwork used in here will help draw in students to the story about J.K. Rowling. It goes over who she was and is today. Simple, easy to read that fits right for child size reading. Downloaded through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A short biography of J.K. Rowling's life in around 50 pages. With illustrations that were eye-catching and beautiful. It seemed less of a way to "Boss the Bestsellers List" than a good guide to life. Either way, I liked it overall, I did have some doubts about a few of the statements though. For instance, I know J.K. tried hard in primary school because she had a teacher with a seating system which meant that when J.K. got moved to the top of the class her friend got moved to the dummy chair. (BBC's A Year in the Life of J.K. Rowling)

The only real thing I found actual fault with was terminology. I understood quite quickly that this was written in American English, which I am not opposed, but I found it distracting to have something described in UK English and mentioned further on in US English. e.g. Primary school, secondary school then transposed with Kindergarten and High school. I would have preferred to stick to one or the other so that the text would flow better.

In the end, I would say as a 32 year old I would be quite happy to buy this. for..... myself. As a massive Potterhead I would love to add this to my collection. I could put it on a bookshelf and prop it open on a quote I'm in the mood for.

Well worth a read regardless of age. I would give this 5 stars except for the inconsistency of language. Off to Gringotts to get the gallons to buy this.

** This review will feature as part of a larger Spotlight Feature on the series on 27 April. Links can be updated **

This book gives an insight into Joanne’s childhood, including the disappointment of not getting into Oxford, becoming a single parent living on benefits, right through to the more well-known years of her life (publisher rejections and then ultimately selling millions of copies of Harry Potter).

There is a great balance between storytelling, publishing stats and illustrations. Very early on, Caroline establishes a few writing concepts using clear and easy to understand sentences. But this is not just a book for young aspiring writers. As Caroline says, “Maybe you’re a writer or you know a writer” – this book inspires writers and non-writers because it’s about picking yourself up from a low point and channelling that disappointment to create a bright future.

The importance of family and the impact of Joanne’s mother’s illness is threaded through the ten chapters of this book. Family is a clear driver for Joanne to follow her dreams to be a writer; it’s heart-breaking she didn’t get a chance to tell her mother about Harry Potter. It’s inspiring that after her fame, Joanne gave back by building a Neurology Clinic. The second theme that runs through this biography is the role of rejection and, as one chapter title explains, Joanne doesn’t see “F for failure” but “F for future”. There is a strong message throughout that we can use our mistakes and rejections to help us grow and achieve our goals – such a brilliant takeaway for any reader.

My view of the series:
I wish this series had been around when I was young and actually, I still found them inspiring to read even as an adult. However, they are ultimately books to inspire the next generation of leaders and I have no doubt that they will.

What I love about this series is that while the books aren’t too long, you still feel like you’ve got the full picture of the woman’s life. Each chapter is only a couple of pages and the ratio of text-pages to illustration-pages is 50:50. What’s more, I love that the illustrations don’t just depict what the words told you but ADD to the story and move it on. The inspirational quotes from the women themselves are a brilliant touch and cleverly illustrated by Sinem.

Caroline has a distinctive and engaging voice that runs throughout the books, sometimes speaking directly to the young readers, which instantly makes these inspiring life-stories feel more accessible and, most importantly, relatable to young readers.

This is a series that can be enjoyed by many ages – young children can see the story and message through illustrations, older children can read text and adult fans can learn about a woman they love. These women are role models to everyone and these books are for all too. Caroline and Sinem have thought about every little detail in these books, right down to the ten chapter titles and how they are presented on the page. It has resulted in a unique series that deserves to sit on everyone’s bookshelf.

I loved reading this. Its put its own twist on the current trend of life stories of empowering women from history. There is more detail and information about the subject, but still keeps it simple to understanding. The book's chapters are also broken up by quotes by the subject and beautiful paper craft inspired illustrations. Would love to read more of these.

I picked this book up because it looked cute and because it was about one of my favourite authors.

I loved the art, and I loved how sweetly and yet accurately J.K. Rowling's story was told in this book.

My favourite part was probably the way many of J.K. Rowling's quotes were spread throughout the book, mostly with a beautiful illustration to accompany it.

I loved the biography and I hope a lot of kids read it and draw inspiration from the real life wonder woman that is J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling, author of the hit book series Harry Potter, is a household name around the world. From children to adults almost everyone has read the books or seen the movies. But how much do most readers really know about the author behind the title; the woman behind the author?

J.K. Rowling: Boss the Bestseller List Like is an inspiring short non-fiction book about the life of Harry Potter author Joanne Kathleen Rowling or Jo is she is referred to in the book. It is an easy read that covers Rowling's life from childhood to post Harry Potter in a way that proves to be motivational.

The eye-catching graphics add to the story and coupled with some of J.K. Rowling's most inspiring quotes there are pages that look like they should be posters on a J.K. Rowling or even a classroom motivation feature wall.

J.K. Rowling: Boss the Bestseller List Like is a book that should be included in all school libraries and I can't wait to read similar books on other inspirational role models from the same series.

This is a short biography about J.K. Rowling. The illustrations are cute and different from other types of books. I think this series is geared toward older elementary school children.

I’ve always been a huge fan of J.K. Rowling. I have fond memories of reading the first Harry Potter books with my dad when they first came out.

Her life story is a huge inspiration to me, as a writer. I was familiar with a lot of her story, but I still found this book fascinating. Jo created her own success by working hard at what she enjoyed doing. She wrote when she had time, including while her daughter was napping. She continued to work hard even after she became successful. She also never forgot her humble beginnings, by giving back to those in need.

The books in this series are beautiful. I love the creative graphics. The images look like they are created with layered pieces of paper. There are many pages just made up of just pictures, with short quotes from J.K. Rowling.

I love this series! There are currently two books, one about Oprah Winfrey and the other about J.K. Rowling. I can’t wait to see what other inspirational women are featured in this series.

A concise, but fulfilling biography of one of the most popular modern writers sheds some light on J.K. Rowling's early attempts to publish her book on a certain young wizard and inspires other writers to keep on doing their job no matter what. Nicely illustrated and full of ingenious quotes from J.K. herself, Caroline Moss' little book is one to cherish and adore - not just by Harry Potter fans, but by anyone who loves great writing! #Jkrowling #NetGalley

I have been a huge fan of Harry Potter since 1997. I still remember waiting in a huge queue - hours before midnight - waiting for the newest book to come out. Needles to say, Harry Potter would not exist without Joanne Rowling.

This biographical book describes the moments in Joanne's life that lead to the publication of the first book. Though it is primarily aimed at a very young audience, I very much enjoyed reading it. The illustrations are eye-catching and Joanne's quotes give the book a very realistic feel.

The ARC of the book was provided to me by NetGalley. All opinions are mine.

Brilliant book.

The ‘Work It, Girl’ books are a wonderful series of biographies of women. From the same group that publishes the Little People Big Dreams series I reviewed a few days ago, these books are for a slightly older audience than the LPBD books.

Written as biographies of women for older elementary and middle-grade readers – these books show you how these women overcame obstacles, worked through (well, literal) walls! I enjoyed the reads too!

The artwork in these books is super-cool – paper-collages which will inspire the reader to create! While the books themselves will of course be a true inspiration too, prompting the readers to challenge themselves, and work smart to achieve their dreams like the women featured in the book have done!

Title: Work It, Girl: Boss the bestseller list like J. K. Rowling
Author: Caroline Moss
Illustrator: Sinam Erkas
Publisher: Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Childrens
Genre: Children’s Nonfiction
Age Range: 8 – 12 years
Hardcover: 64 pages

J.K. Rowling’s story from when she was little Jo, an avid reader who aspired to be just like her favoritest writer when she grew up, to who she is today, is one that will inspire everyone. She succeeded despite the odds, she food-stamped her way to success, she wrote in the gaps between naps (of her little one) – and today millions have enjoyed the story of the most famous wizard boy who did not know he was one!

“Anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” – J.K.Rowling

Her story lets us know that if we persist, we can achieve greatness. It is a wonderful way to inspire young writers (and others too) to pursue their dreams; and keep going.

“You control your own life, your own will is extremely powerful.” – J.K.Rowling

And I totally loved the chapter titles – very imaginative! What’s not to love titles like ‘From Rags to ‘Richest”, or one that questions if F stands for Future rather than Failure; and a Chapter 9 3/4 too!

I am hoping the publishers will include more GirlBosses in this series; this book is empowering, inspirational, and accessible to all audiences.

In addition, I loved those 10 life lessons from the featured woman included at the end of the book; along with questions to reflect on and a list of resources for further reading. The books are sprinkled with quotes that inspire – quotes from the featured women and quotes from others that seem to perfectly fit with their life.

And the illustrations – they are simply gorgeous. The paper-cut collage style illustrations in bright colors create a pop-out effect that is sure to appeal to, well, just about everyone!

I love the ‘Work It, Girl’ books – a must-read and a great addition to classroom and home libraries for boys and girls.

5★
“ ‘A little girl named Alice approves, so we’re going to move forward with your book,’ he told Jo.
‘But don’t quit your day job. There just isn’t a lot of money in children’s book publishing I’m afraid.’ ”

I think that falls into the category of Famous Last Words.

J.K. Rowling needs no introduction to readers around the world. Or at least her most famous protagonist doesn’t: Harry Potter, boy wizard. This is an excellent addition to the Work It Girl Series about successful women who’ve persevered against all kinds of obstacles to achieve what they set out to do. In J.K.’s case, one obstacle was not using her real name, Joanne, but changing it to initials, since the publisher thought it would be a book for boys.

First, we are introduced to her childhood and her passion for stories and reading to her sister, her reluctant audience! She became obsessed with writing when she fell in love with Jessica Mitford’s Hons and Rebels, but she was never a good student. Her teachers recognised her potential, but Jo just wouldn’t live up to it.

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Young Jo Rowling, ‘hiding’ in class

We are taken through her life, her mother’s illness (MS), her lacklustre university days, and her early jobs, commuting by train. All the while, she’s had a character and a story simmering away in her mind, but so far, it’s been another unrealised potential. But time on the train set her to daydreaming about this kid.

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Perhaps some inspiration came from the train journey.

She began working on her story and writing, but she told absolutely nobody about it. She kept it to herself, worried that if she were teased, she’d quit.

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Jo, dreaming of broomsticks and wizards!

She became so engrossed in her story, that the train became her haven. She loved her work at Amnesty International, but the train was her private office.

“She couldn’t wait to get to the train. The story was exploding from her brain onto the page. She couldn’t write fast enough to get everything down.”

The clever illustrations are all made of paper, except for a couple of photos of Jo herself. I liked this one on the train.

My Goodreads review includes: Photograph of Jo Rowling on the train

We are shown her moving to Portugal, marrying, having a baby, divorcing, and returning broke to live with her sister in Scotland. Baby Jessica (named for Jessica Mitford, her inspiration), was a poor sleeper, but would finally doze happily in a coffee shop, so Jo snatched what time she could to write. This is the story most of us know – the now-famous J.K. Rowling writing in a coffee shop with a fractious baby dozing in her pram. So much for needing a special studio!

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Jo at work in her ‘office’ with Jessica sleeping (we hope) in her pram

“Then, one rainy night in London, the manuscript landed in the hands of a man named Barry Cunningham at Bloomsbury. He read it once, then again. He loved the writing but he knew he needed the intended audience to get it as well. Wizards? Hagrid? Muggles? The Mirror of Erised?”

Guess which expert he asked? His little girl! He gave her a chapter, and she was so excited that it confirmed what he already knew. And did you notice something? She was a little girl, not a little boy, and she loved it!

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Barry Cunningham and his daughter Alice, rejoicing

I could stop here, and say the rest is history, but I’d be doing a disservice to the widespread appeal of Harry and his friends. People of all ages in all countries have enjoyed their adventures, including me.

I was buying one of the early books for a granddaughter and I mentioned to the cashier that I would be borrowing it, as would my daughter, and the young cashier said she and her mum and grandma all shared it too! Note again, we are all females as well. So much for boys’ own adventures, eh?

My Goodreads review includes an illustration with the caption: Some of the people who queue for ages for books and films

Jo Rowling now addresses audiences and students, encouraging them as she would have encouraged herself.

“ ‘I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a checklist ...’ she told the students. ‘Your qualifications are not your life ... Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control.’ ”

What a writer, what a woman, what a role model. She’s not forgotten her Amnesty and social justice roots either. She’s given away a tremendous amount of her wealth and founded a neurological medical centre in honour of her mother.

I think both the author and illustrator of this book have done a great job of bringing Rowling’s story to life with a hope of encouraging youngsters to have a go, find your passion, follow your dream.

Thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy from which I’ve quoted and shared pictures.

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of JK Rowling. Mostly because of her Tweets, the diversity issues in the Harry Potter series, and of course the authorial intent problematic.
However, I am a huge Harry Potter fan and grew up reading the books and watching the movies.

This biography gave an interesting insight into Rowling’s life. The language was pretty simple which makes this book perfect for kids. The graphics were great - some kind of paper cut style I can’t really describe.
While I could’ve done without the “10 key lessons from J.K. Rowling’s life” part at the end of the book, I liked the little question section. The questions could be answered after reading the book in class, so the book is kinda interactive.

That being said, this was an inspiring biography with beautiful illustrations, perfect for children and adults alike. I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series.

A really enjoyable biography about JK Rowling. Worth reading for any Harry Potter fan. It guides readers from her childhood, through failure to her overwhelming International success.

'Work It, Girl: J.K. Rowling' by Caroline Moss is part of a new series made to help inspire young women. I'm neither young, nor a woman, and I found it very inspiring.

The story of JK Rowling, or Jo as she is referred to here, is one I was familiar with. Here it is presented along with quotes from Jo, and shows her determination to create. The inspiration for Harry Potter is discussed along with how long the story stayed with her. At one point, she quits a job with a very long commute to keep working on the series that would make her famous. The book finishes with 10 takeaways from the life of J.K. Rowling, like 'If you work hard now, it will pay off later' and 'Give back!'

I found this a very inspiring read for younger (and older readers). The book is filled with really nice papercut illustrations, and the quotes add a nice touch to reinforce the message of the book.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
