I loved the characters. Kate is at her best.
Narration of the story is mind blowing.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for giving me an advance copy of this twisted psychological thriller.
A fantastic story. I loved the intertwining plots and the characters.
I enjoyed that you never really know someone and things can change if you try hard enough.
What would you think if you arrived to your place of work, only to be told you hadn’t worked there for five years? That’s the conundrum/panic that financial journalist Ally Linden faces – and the fact that the last few days have been a blur. She has to piece together what has happened to understand why she’s blanked it out. Her husband tries to help, but he’s got worries of his own – worries that Ally needs to also discover – her best friend is sick, there’s another woman hungry for her job and all the while, any detail Ally discovers only leads to more confusion. This twisty, turny read is absorbing; you want to know what really happened to Ally and you care about her.
Absolutely loved this book! I haven’t been able to put this down and I have found it simple to lose myself in page after page of this book.
Great writing style, great characters.
Absolutely loved it
I really enjoyed this fantastic book which got me interested from the very first page and soon turned into a fast paced thriller which I couldn't put down.
It was extremely well written, brilliantly addictive and I was hooked from the very first page until the last one.
I hope to read more from this author in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
I really enjoyed this book not for the reasons I was expecting. I was expecting a fast paced twisty turning psychological thriller but I felt it was more of a slow paced domestic thriller, this isn’t a criticism, just an observation, as I still enjoyed the unfolding of the story. I really enjoyed the premise of this story as the main character Ally tries to unlock her missing memories after experiencing a state of fugue but with no idea of what led her to disconnect from her life for those two days. Desperate to find her memories Ally employs a number of strategies to try and discover what happened on those missing days.
Ally Linden, a successful finance journalist steps out of the rain on a Thursday morning and in to her office, a normal work day in the heaving metropolis of NYC except its not. Ally hasn’t worked here for five years and to make matters worse she has no recollection of what she is doing there or why she is far from her usual well groomed self.
Intrigued? Check ups with the experts conclude she went in to a fugue state possible caused by something that traumatised her, she has no visible signs of injury and the last thing she can remember is arguing with her husband Hugh the night before. It gets worse for her when he collects her from the hospital he reveals that their argument took place on Monday night, so what happened to her on the Tuesday and Wednesday?
Little by little the pieces of Ally’s puzzle are stuck together, however be ready for a lot of red herrings. The secondary characters keep you guessing, her husband seems to have been keeping something from her, her intern seems power hungry, he didn’t do anything suspicious but I felt her brother was up to something plus I’d better not forget her ex lover who comes back on the scene. Ally’s childhood also comes back to haunt her, could something that happened all those years ago be responsible for something now?
She enrols the help of a PI to bring the puzzle pieces together and to be quite honest I really didn’t see it coming but when I got to the end I had an “ah!” moment. It is very cleverly done, like I said above red herrings have you pointing the finger at everyone until the big reveal.
I’ll be honest I didn’t warm to Ally straight away but as the book progressed I did warm to her and her journey to the truth. An excellent read mystery fans!
This is an immensely suspenseful novel with several linked plots. When financial journalist Ally Linden arrives, drenched to the core, at her Manhattan offices but finds she has forgotten her key card, she sets off a chain of events that detail the unbelievable complex matter that is the human brain. For Ally has not worked at these offices for more than five years, and shockingly, she cannot remember much beyond her first name. Who is she is, where she lives, what career she now enjoys…it all appears lost to Ally and she cannot remember anything about the previous 48 hours, or the traumatic incident that must lie at the core of this amnesia.
Diagnosed with a dissociative state, we then follow Ally as she tries, slowly and steadfastedly, to piece the components of her life together. But are her husband and therapist withholding the truth? How helpful is the private detective hired to help Ally in hear search? And does a shocking childhood incident have anything to do with Ally’s current trauma?
This novel is a real page turner and will have you rooting for Ally as she searches to uncover suppressed memories. It is also a novel that reinforces the importance of the eight cognitive skills that so many of us take for granted. Among the twelve novels Kate White has written to date, this one stands out to me as an absolute psychological masterpiece. I am grateful to the publishers, Harper Collins, and to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for this honest, unbiased review.
This was an excellent read with lots of complexities along the way. It’s a new author for me and am looking forward to reading some of her other books.
Ally is a finance journalist but when she turns up for work one morning she discovers that she hasn’t actually worked there for five years. She knows who she is and that she is married to Hugh but the events of the previous few days draw a blank.
A few memories begin to drift back and as she is already seeing a therapist she increases the time spent with her hoping that this will help things improve. She also decides to employ a private investigator to help unravel the mystery of her missing memories.
Ally wonders if an event from the past could have triggered her memory loss or perhaps she witnessed something that she is trying to block out. What soon becomes clear though is that someone does not want her memory to return.
I loved this book. Well written and plotted, it’s gripping and I didn’t want it to end. Look forward to more from this author. Thank you NetGalley for an early copy
A brilliant read that keeps you guessing. I thought the premise was very interesting a women went into a fugue state and hires a PI to find out what happened in those two lost days.
Financial Journalist Ally has lost two days from her life. It seems she has experienced a Fugue state, possibly as a result of a trauma. Although she has been told to rest her mind, she tries to find clues to fill in the missing 48 hours with the help of her Analyst and a PI she hires.
Have You Seen Me is an exciting book. As Ally fills the gaps, worries why this has happened and fears it might recur, further unexpected events occur making her fear for her safety. Something doesn’t feel quite right at home and she has no idea why.
Kate White has produced a tense, atmospheric thriller, and as the pressure increases, one you know you will keep reading until the end. The ending is not unpredictable, that’s not a problem, but the weak reason why is.
I am glad I read it though.
With thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK
A book Inwas drawn into and read late into the night.Tense chilling characters that come alive. KatevWhite is an author to follow and recommend,#netgalley#avonbooksuk
I greatly enjoyed this book, thank you for giving me a preview copy. The plot was interesting and fast paced and I sympathised with the characters. This is the first novel I have read by this author but I hope it will not be the last!
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the story of Ally. One morning she turns up for work but realises something isn’t right. Her boss comes in and asks what she is doing there as she hasn’t worked there for five years. It turns out that she has lost two days of her life. Ally is determined to find out what happened to her in those two days.
This was a fast paced thriller with almost every character a suspect. I really enjoyed it and was surprised that I didn’t guess the ending correctly. This is my first book by this author and will definitely be reading more by her.
In many ways, this book is pretty simple, in terms of the characters and the plot. That's no bad thing. It makes for a quick, pacey read. There's enough mystery throughout, to keep you hanging on until the end. I wasn't really surprised by the ending, but I did enjoy reading this book.
This book was enthralling. I could not put it down and was eager to figure out what had happened and what would happen next.
Ally arrives at work on a wet day in Manhattan to discover that she has not worked there for 5 years. She cannot remember getting to work or anything else at all. She works frantically to try and put the pieces together of the missing pieces of her memory, but is she getting herself in more trouble by doing so.
I was suspicious of everyone, I loved this read-absolutely gripping!
What a great book. Ally turns up at the office to find she hasn't worked at the company for years. She passes out and wakes up in hospital with no memory of the previous few days. The story follows Allys quest to recover her memory and piece together the events of that time.
. Good story, interesting characters and good pace.
I couldn't put it down.
I loved the description of the book, and was happily page turning, or in my case tapping to get to the heart of the book.I couldn't wait to find out what had happened.it was certainly intriguing.I don't want to give any facts away it is a book that you have to discover for yourself.Well worth a read.
This was an amazing read!
Ally walks into work one morning only to be told that she hasn't worked there in 5 years.
After medical assessments it becomes clear that Ally has been in a fugue state and has been missing for 2 days.
Suddenly she becomes obsessed with figuring out what cause this.
Was it something that happened to her just before she disappeared ? or was it a tragedy from her childhood that has reared its Ugly Head ?
I love an amnesia trope and the character has to piece together what happened, how they got into that situation and what they forgot. I felt as though this story portrayed relationships well and with a real honesty. It was very well written to constantly have a good pace and an excellent level of intrigued that made me want to carry on. The amount of tension that I felt Reading this story was extremely high and there were times where I became very anxious Reading.
It featured one small thing I didn't like with regards to the reveal but that is definitely a personal issue and I don't think it would bother anybody else. Overall my enjoyment of this story made me give this book a 5-star rating and I really hope to get a physical copy one day.
My first foray into a Kate White book, I was pulled in by the premise of the story with an amnesiac main character Ally Linden wanting to know what had happened to her in the past two days.
Ally, a finance analyst found herself in her old office only to learn she had left that office five years ago. She slowly recovered her memory except for the past 2 days. What had happened to her in those days? The mystery deepened when she found a wad of tissues with dried blood on it.
I loved how Ally acted when she found herself in a pickle. She kept her cool and tried to get to the bottom of the mystery even to the poubt of hiring the detectives.
The story was a bit slow to read, but I didn’t mind that as it was a slow day for me. The perp was obvious, but I turned a blind eye to everything evident and kept reading. I liked most of the story as it kept the suspense going. But…
Then came my real niggle; the ending was too abrupt. I felt I was missing a few pages where the subplots were not completed for me.
Ah well, a good read, On to my next.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the arc of this book by Kate White.
4 star read for me- was a very enjoyable read which is well written and a great quick read.
Oooh I loved this! Everything Ally thought is real, is not. Where has that chunk of her life gone? We follow her as she pieces it together, with a few shocks along the way. A fabulous book which kept me glued to the story until the end!
I really enjoyed this intriguing mystery thriller. It takes us through the living nightmare that Ally is experiencing, when she enters a dissociative state and loses several days of her life, heading back to a place she had worked 5 years ago. What has triggered it and can she trust everyone around her knowing something may have happened with them that triggered it?
Ally is a thoroughly likeable character. She stays measured and focused despite her stress and strife. She is generally open, with the sense to be guarded when necessary. She is strong and determined to find out what has happened to deal with it– whilst frightened also that it may happen again. The men in her life have loads of question marks hanging over them. So as a reader you are not sure whether to like/trust or distrust them. The use of a PI makes it a bit grittier.
There are good twists, turns and revelations that gradually emerge at a fitting pace. The latter third of the book was largely predictable, maybe a bit rushed, but nonetheless I still enjoyed the journey and potential for my theory to be wrong. Easy to read, with a decent pace and characters, it made for an enjoyable read.
On a cold, rainy morning, finance journalist Ally Linden arrives early to work in her Manhattan office, only to find that she’s forgotten her keycard and needs to have a colleague she’s never met let her in. When her boss finally arrives, he seems surprised to see her—because she hasn’t worked there in five years.
Ally knows her name, but little else, and it’s only after several hours in an emergency room and multiple interviews with the hospital psychiatrist that she begins to piece together important facts: she lives on the Upper West Side; she’s now a freelance personal finance journalist; she’s married to a lovely man named Hugh. But she still can’t recall what happened to her during the previous two days. When she learns that she’s experienced a dissociative fugue state, Ally tries to think of triggers and remembers that she’d been seeing a therapist about a traumatic event from her childhood, in which she came across evidence for a murder that was never solved.. This is the first book I read by Kate
Desperate to unearth answers, Ally focuses on figuring out where she spent the missing forty-eight hours. As ominous details of the two days pile up, so does the terrifying pressure: she must recover the time she lost before the time she has left runs out.
A fascinating story with lots of twist and turns. Very interesting facts and explanation of disassociation, easy to imagine the terror generated. The suspense was maintained right to the end. Great conclusion.
This was a fantastic, gripping read. The suspense was expertly crafted and had me racing through the book, I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to read more from this author.
A gripping read that kept me guessing all the way. Finance journalist Ally arrives at the office one morning only to find she hasn't worked there for five years. The book follows her journey trying to piece together three lost days of her life. There a friends and foes and foes who masquerade as friends. Many people are not what they seem, and soon everyone is under suspicion. As she begins to construct a timeline in an attempt to fill in the blanks , a trauma from her childhood resurfaces, adding another dimension to the problem.
Highly recommended.
We have all lost hours or more in the haze of excited alcohol but this heroine finds a chasm not a crack in her life. Is it because her life is falling appart or that she wants to rend it deliberately. How can such a short period of " amnesia" (if thats what it is) cause such anguish. Her attempts at reconstruction are credible and well done. This unusual story kept me wanting to know more which is the stamp of a well written original plot. The plot twist makes one ready to question the best help in ones own future. I did wonder if Uber was paying for product placement with some of eher journeys clocking up pretty big bills but hey this is FICTION...and at its best.
An unusual story but with a totally believable plot and characters. At first I wondered if I would get into this book as I was unsure where it could go but so glad I carried on as it turned into a great read and one that I had to keep reading way past bedtime because I just so needed to know what happened next. It will surprise you! Not read from this author before but will definitely look out for more from her.
Ally is missing her memories of the past 48 hours and has no idea where to start or who she can trust.
I enjoyed this book, but like others have said I did think the ending seemed rather rushed. I also thought the "twist" was obvious and had been done before. (Black eyed Susans).
I found Ally quite irritating and pretentious which doesn't bode well for a main character and the finance references boring (I am a qualified accountant and hated it! Might be why!).
I definitely think the author could have built the atmosphere more by focusing on the story regarding Ally's past rather than trying to use numerous different characters and relationships to cause suspicion. This being said it was an enjoyable read and I written well. I will read more by this author in future.
A real winner of a novel from Kate. Ally tries to discover where and why she appeared to disappear for a few days with a wonderful, unexpected twist of answers. Kate is a new author for me, but one I will definitely look for in the future.
Can You See Me was my first Kate White book and now I am eager for more. What a twisty and crazy story this was. I read this over 2 nights, desperate at find out what was going to happen next and how it would all end. Great psychological/domestic thriller.
Ally is a financial journalist and turns up way she loves early to work one morning... only o be old she hadn’t worked at Greenbacks for 5 years. So why did she go there and why is she looking dishevelled and lost. Next thing she knows she is in the hospital being told she had an dissociative episode and had been missing for 2 days. Trying to unlock the memories proves harder than she thought and there is somebody who definitely doesn’t want her to remember.
I was sucked into this ok straight away and really enjoyed it. Still not sure about the ending, which seemed rushed and unexpected.
Thanks o Avon. Books UK for my advanced copy of this book to read.
When financial journalist Ally Linden turns up for work to be told she hasn’t worked there for five years she collapses. It appears she can’t recall the past two days. As Ally tries to remember what she did, who she saw, and where she went, it seems that Ally is not the only one interested to know what happened to her.
A good fast paced story with interesting characters which was an enjoyable read.
Have You Seen Me is a compulsive thriller ,one of those books that is very hard to put down .Imagine losing 2 days of memories and not know where you have been or who with ,it would be quite frightening, this is what happens to Ally .Gradually her past catches up with her .This book is fast paced and exciting ,just when I thought I had it figured out I didn't .Very good ending very enjoyable book .Many thanks to the Publisher the Author and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review .
I devoured Have You Seem Me? in just over a day. It’s an interesting concept and I felt the plot worked well with each chapter piquing your interest enough to move onto the next one. It’s the tale of one woman’s dangerous quest to unlock 48 hours of memories that she’s completely forgotten. Memories that others may not want her to recover. Ally’s dissociative state also brings back traumatic memories from her childhood. I found this book to be gripping and thrilling and hard to put down. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
Extremely strange and gripping. Enjoyed the whole story and could not wait to get to juicy ending. Loved the main character.
An enjoyable, intriguing read.
With a well structured storyline, characters that had their own individual stories and the authors brilliant writing style made this book a page turner for me.
How I love secrets! I love how they slowly bubble to the surface, how they make me think no one is above suspicion, especially spouses and best friends. I love how they make me think about how I would react in a given situation - would I do a better job of ferreting out the truth than the characters themselves? Or would I be just as trusting (which - as we all know - is never a good idea when it comes to domestic thrillers!).
The answer is probably yes (we all want to trust the people we love don't we?). This doesn't stop me almost yelling at the page though when I see a character doing something that is obviously a mistake though. And there was plenty of yelling here. But in a good way because this was a good book.
Kate White does a great job in Ally, a character that I found myself caring about. And she takes what is a fairly standard plot for the genre and making it feel fresh and interesting. There are plenty of twists and turns, and they didn't go where I expected them to. Which meant I was wrong-footed more than once and the ending, when it came, was a surprise.
I love surprises as much as I love secrets. Which means this was a good book for me. Once I enjoyed a lot and would recommend to others who enjoy a good old psychological thriller.
Memory loss can be absolutely terrifying to experience, for all that it’s a commonplace – many would say overused – romance trope. No wonder, then, that it’s also a staple of the horror and thriller genres as the afflicted protagonist attempts to piece together the missing hours or days and find an explanation for their erasure, even as external forces conspire to prevent that happening. In this story, our heroine initially finds herself missing several years of her life, acting out her morning routine as if she were still working for a former employer. However, once she accepts that she’s in the wrong office building, and receives the all-clear as regards her physical health, she is able to remember all but the events of the past few days. Even that, though, is disturbing, since there is evidence to suggest someone has sustained an injury, and with no recollection of who, what, or how this possible accident happened, Ally has no way of knowing whether she was witness, victim, or perpetrator.
In spite of being advised to stay home and rest, in the hope that she will either regain her remaining memories or come to terms with their permanent loss, Ally sets out to discover what happened to her in those missing days. She hires a private investigator to help her, but also does a fair bit of detective work of her own, particularly after the man working for her vanishes himself. All the clues point to Ally’s amnesia having been caused by a shock and trying to establish whether that happened because of, or separate from, the putative accident she was involved in leads to Ally interrogating her memories of another shocking incident: this time one that happened in her childhood.
On her way home from school, Ally had taken a forbidden route and stumbled across the body of a murdered child. Fearing punishment, she had told her parents and the police a slightly amended version of events, leading to her memories from that time becoming confused with the sanitised version, until the current incident allows her to regain control and accept the true timeline of what happened. As Ally investigates both periods of memory dysfunction, it becomes clear someone wants to stop her uncovering the truth, endangering both Ally’s life and the lives of those around her.
I liked Ally a lot and could fully sympathise with young Ally’s bending of the truth, even as the adult Ally felt guilt at not having been fully honest with the police – potentially allowing a killer to go free. I also liked her resourcefulness as she tried to retrace her steps of the missing days from the few scraps of information available to her. I was less keen on her husband, who seemed to be a thorough waste of space, and more than a little disappointed at the book’s final showdown, which seemed to come from rather left-field compared to the hints we seemed to have been getting up to that point. Still, I enjoyed all the questions that were posed regarding the nature and reliability of our memories under different types of pressure. Not a perfect book, all in all, but still an author I’d be happy to read again.
