Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this copy of Inside Out Medieval Castle by Justine Ciovacco in exchange for an honest review. This publishes September 15, 2020.
I enlisted the help of an 8-Year-old for the reading and reviewing of this fun book! We really enjoyed the pictures and information in this book. The illustrations were very captivating, and were looked at for long periods of time. We both learned from this book.
This book would make a great gift for kids interested in castles!
This book had so much info jam-packed onto each page. It might be a little overwhelming to younger readers, but is great for older kids interested in history
This is such a perfect guide to a Medieval Castle and day to day life. The illustrations are perfect.
I was always fascinated about castles and their operation, this book answered all my questions. It describes the life of Lords, ladies workers etc. in the castle.
Even thought the book is targeted for young readers it kept me fully engaged with its fun facts and beautiful page filled illustrations.
I think every one who loves history will enjoy this detailed book.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Groups for an early review copy in exchange for my honest review.
A longbow as tall as the archer. A tapestry capturing a battle scene that is 75 yards long. A castle that burns 1,000 candles per night. Everything is bigger in an Inside Out Medieval Castle.
From the security built into the entrance to the stone toilets dropping waste into the moat, all aspects of medieval castles are covered here. This heavily illustrated look into the middle ages also discusses the workers within the castle and its lords, ladies, and knights.
Ever since watching Game of Thrones, I have been fascinated by the mechanics of the middle ages. Inside Out Medieval Castle provides a detailed look inside that long ago era. It is fully illustrated with both photographs of real castles and illustrations of their individual parts. Even though I am clearly past the age group to which this book is marketed, I really enjoyed reading it. And I learned a lot too! It is truly amazing what humanity can create to defend or attack a huge stone building. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars!
Thanks to becker&meyer! kids, Quarto Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is an excellent resource for homeschooling families or teachers who are studying medieval times and/or castles! It is full of information and illustrations detailing castles and castle life. This would even be a great gift for children who have a passion for castles.
Medieval Castle is a new book in the Inside Out series of cutaway books for kids. Due out 15th Sept from Quarto on their becker&mayer! kids imprint, it's 16 pages and will be available in hardcover/boardbook format.
This is an interesting fact-filled book about castles based on real historical examples from the middle ages. The cutaway pictures show features from the outside inward with each successive layer peeled away to show the interior features. The graphics are very well designed and detailed. The text, which is placed in highlighted sidebars on each page, is well written and understandable. The art is detailed and well rendered.
This would make a great gift for a young history fan, or library (school or public) use. I noticed new details each time I looked at the interior pages.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Kids who are fascinated by castles will, I think, be fascinated by this meticulously illustrated title. They will see and learn about castle design, the various parts of the castle; for example, the armory and Great Hall, and will also find out about what life was like within these walls.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
A very short book, but packed with information and very well illustrated. Although it is meant for young children, any age may find it interesting. Provides a summary of every aspect of medieval castles to include the functions of each space and what life was like in a castle. A good book to introduce young children to medieval history.
Ciovacco's investigation into life in a medieval castle will bring back memories of Biesty's Cross-Section series from parents' youth. Filled with page after page of wonderful illustrations and insightful tidbits of information, this book (and series) will tantalize the youngest of curious minds.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer! for the opportunity to read an advance reading copy.
Learn About Castle’s and Castle Life
For such a short book, this one is jam-packed with information, not only about castle structure but about how life was lived in them back in medieval times. There are 8 two-page spreads featuring different aspects, like the armory, the Great Hall, the Lord's men, and daily life. Each spread has a sidebar about a castle still in existence. It's amazing how much the author has packed into these few pages. Not much depth is gone into, of course, but there is surprising breadth. This book is intended for children, but even adults who have an interest—but not much knowledge—in castles will find this a succinct, fascinating read.
This book is an excellent round-up of the history, architectural assets and everyday life in a medieval castle. It covers extensively centuries of history and knowledge in a very easy, accessible way, for a variety of readers, from adults to children. The illustrations are also inspiring. The examples are based on the English castle but otherwise it is a good non-fiction read, which takes into account the historical facts and figures.
