This is a terrific book. I like how the chapters are short... Goodness knows that moms don't have time to sit in one place and read the entire book in one setting. The recipes are relatively easy to follow, I like the tips too. The yoga is short and easy to do. I love the how the book is divided up too.
Helpful and fun book!
Even though I am a mom to a lot of fictional characters, I am at a loss to what I should be aware of when I become a real one. It sounds chaotic and frightening. But yes again, thanks to books like this to make the moms less chaotic and become more of the self-caring moms they're supposed to be.
The writing is fun to read. It's never boring and doesn't preach. It has actual recipes and what and how to dos as well.
I wish the illustrations were better, a bit more polished and complete.
A good read for moms. Actual tips you can follow.
Thanks publishers and the Authors for the book.
A self help guide, something completely different to what I would usually read. But great to take time out and focus on mental well being. There are lots of different scenarios in the chapters which I could relate to. These are quick chapters but you could just go to the chapter relevant to you. Each scenario focuses on mindfulness, yoga and recipes. It's good to remember you're not the only one who could be struggling as a parent. This is a great book to improve mental well being.
Thank you to Netgalley and The Book Guild for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The thing this book does best is its tone. The author maintains a positive, non-judgemental approach throughout, which is vital in a book of this nature. It would be really easy for the author to come across as condescending or come across as pushy with her advice, but the book feels like a nice warm hug, or having coffee with a friend who keeps your spirits up.
The breakdown of the chapters felt very manageable for a mum on-the-go - a couple of pages to paint a picture, some mindful tips, a recipe to try and a yoga pose. I actually would have liked a little bit more in them to be honest; while the positivity was great, I always appreciate real brutal honesty about how tough things can get as a parent and I feel like this book came in too soft on that at times.
The mindfulness tips were very accessible (which isn't always easy as mindfulness can feel like a very big concept) and felt that they could be easily slotted in around a busy day with kids. The recipes and the yoga poses were lovely additions but I personally felt less connected to them as tools to keep me calm and collected in my parenting life.
It may seem like a small niggle, but it really made a difference to my reading experience; I read a digital copy and the layout of the book didn't flow as well as I'd hoped, so things jarred for me as I was going through each chapter. The images were mostly on the following page rather than being on the same as their topic (e.g. the yoga pose picture not on the same page as the description) and the chapters all ran on from each other where a page break might have made things easier to digest visually.
It was a lovely quick read for anyone who is too hard on themselves as a mum (so all mums!).
I really enjoyed this book from Sheena and found her writing and her tips both useful and comforting.
Knowing you aren't alone when you feel zapped and like you are being pulled in a million different directions daily can be so helpful. Not only does this book acknowledge that, but it also gives you some tips on how to cope with it.
The book is split into different chapters which covers scenarios that mums will identify with all too well - from losing your identity to feeling judged to being stressed. Sheena then goes on to give you three tips from three different perspectives - mindfulness mum , nourished mum and yogi mum. I absolutely loved some of this advice and can't wait to try more of these tips - I am sure they will be used plenty over the upcoming school holidays!
I found that these tips are handy and also - very helpfully - easy to work into your daily routine and life. Nothing is too 'out there' and I am sure every mum will find plenty of things that will be useful for them.
