Description

A chapter book retelling the story of Joseph, who was sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers and unfairly put into prison with additional related snippets from other Bible stories. But God cares, providing guidance, support and hope through the situations.

A reassuring story to help older children reflect and talk to people they trust about Joseph’s emotions and experiences, providing guidance for them when they feel life is unfair, including support from God.

The ‘God cares’ series provides a Biblical approach to discussing emotions and behaviour with children to nurture an attitude of wellness. Children at different ages approach things differently in their stages of emotional development, so this series works at two different levels: illustrated Readers aimed at 5-7 year olds and Chapter books aimed at 8+ years. Please note that children progress at different reading abilities and stages of emotional development so the age ranges are only a guide for parents and carers.

The Bible stories are retold reflecting on the emotions and encourages children to discuss and relate this within their situations. Sections at the back provide a reflective space for children and practical advice for parents and carers.

Debbie Duncan, author of The Art of Daily Resilience, Brave and Gifted, is a nurse and a teacher, and mother of four children. She has considerable insight into what constitutes resilience and bravery: the ability to cope, to stay on course, to bounce back. In her books she considers what is required for physical, mental, and spiritual durability, interweaving biblical teaching, prayers, with personal anecdote and sound advice. This she now applies specifically to support parents and carers raising children.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Lion Hudson ltd for the earc to read and review.

What a fascinating book, i love this series of books, they are brilliant for children to learn biblical stories in an easier way. They teach all about emotions, anxiety, anger, forgiveness, fear, overcoming huge obstacles, how to treat others and how to cope when others treat you wrong and honestly so much more. These books are incredibly well written and thought out.

The biblical story in this book was really interesting following Joseph’s life in a big family being the favourite and the jealousy his brothers had and them in return making his life incredibly difficult but how he with God at his side found the strength and courage to fight past the worst situations and make them good.

I really loved learning more about this story, plus we also got a couple smaller stories within that related to the topic, which I loved. This book comes with some little work pages that children can fill in whilst reading which is a great way to engage them and to help them understand further what they’ve read.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, it was written really clearly and cleverly sharing the story in small chapters but with enough detail to understand what was going on. I love that these books make the people more real by understanding the emotions and feelings that they felt through these events.

If you are looking for wonderful biblical stories to read I highly recommend this series.

This book would be good for a discussion with a child who thinks things are unfair. This book goes along in Joseph's life. How he struggled and how he overcame the unfair things that happened to him. This would be great for a one on one discussion or just used to show how the Bible is applicable in daily life.

One of Bible's unfortunate person, or you might say blessed. How could he not? From the special kid, most loved by his dad, become a slave at young age. But didn't God do miracles from his life? Who would thought that after being so obedient to God, he would be thrown in a jail? What if that happens to you?

With parallel stories from other Bible characters that align with Joseph's story, the author give me insight on how God weaves the story of our life. It's is beautiful and amazing beyond words can say.

When life doesn't seem fair, it can lead to stress and stress leads to more wrong decisions. This chapter book on the life of Joseph of the Old Testament is a great example of how Joseph handled the stress of jealousy, bitterness, and life being unfair. This is a good book to read as a family for the conversations it will lead to. What did Joseph do right and what did he do wrong. How did he trust God and how can we trust God when life gets hard. Family is our first community and helping our children will be the best gift you can give.

A special thank you to Lion Hudson and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

When life is unfair by Debbie Duncan

This book on the series of God Cares from Debbie Duncan it’s based on the life of Joseph and other examples from the Bible. Even though Joseph's story happened many years ago it is still very applicable nowadays.
The book would allow children and adults to reflect about stressful or unfair situations. It will also highlight that God can heal and cares not just for their physical body but also for the mental well being.
The book is very practical as well. At the end of each chapter there are questions to ponder and space to draw or write their thoughts.
It will definitely create meaningful conversations in the family.

Will definitely recommend this book to be translated into spanish.

I loved When Life is Unfair by Debbie Duncan. When Life is Unfair is a young readers version of the Bible’s story of Joseph. Throughout the book, it compared the story of Joseph to things that Jesus went through. The message that I received through the book is that even though life is not fair at the time, Jesus is there in the midst of what we are going through and there is a purpose for it. I could see this book being used as a Bible Study because it has writing prompts and discussions to talk about what the readers are learning. It also has helps for parents and educators in the back of the book. I would recommend this book to Christian families and educators. The author has written similar books and I would like to read those too! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book! (This review is also on GoodReads.)
