This tale begins as a horror story from a hostage point of view, It swiftly evolves into cyberpunk coming of age for AI sentience in an android housing. The heroines are a scientist finding out just how unethical the corporation employing he can be, and the android called Silon (among many other designations) who has become so much more than what was expected of her.
Along the way we are given clues as to the era (the movie 'Terminator' is over a century old) although most of the fashions and IT are definitely still twenty-first century. The humans are definitely human and the AIs, whether android or mainframe, are easy to believe in. In between the action and the gore are redeeming discussions of ethical dilemmas.
What I liked most about the book is that despite being part of a series, this volume stands on its own. It is cliff-hanger free and satisfying.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an e-copy in exchange for my honest review.
