THE TRUTH HIDES IN THE DARK

Kate Marshall’s investigation into a young boy’s disappearance sends her down an unexpectedly twisted path in a riveting thriller by multi-million bestselling author, Robert Bryndza.

When Private Investigator Kate Marshall is rushed to hospital after being pulled into a riptide current in the sea, the near-death experience leaves her shaken. During her recovery, she befriends Jean, an elderly lady on the same ward. Jean tells the harrowing story of how her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing eleven years ago during a camping trip on Dartmoor.

By the time Kate is well enough to go home, she's agreed to take on the case, but when Kate and her trusty sidekick Tristan start to look at the events of that fateful night, they discover that Jean has a dark past that could have put Charlie in jeopardy.

Was Charlie abducted? Or did he fall into Devil's Way? A rushing river that vanishes into a gorge close to where they were camping.

When Kate and Tristan discover that a social worker who flagged concerns about Jean and her daughter was found brutally murdered shortly after Charlie vanished, it makes them question everything they thought they knew about the family...

Filled with twists and turns, Devil's Way is the fourth Kate Marshall novel and the most gripping and satisfying yet!

I really enjoyed this mystery and thought it just got better and better. It had a satisfying and realistic ending and I highly recommend.
I guess what I loved the most about this was how invested I became with everyone. The book was skillfully written with surprises at every turn.
This was my second novel by this author and I’m hooked.
I read some of this but mostly chose to listen to the audiobook. Narrated by Jan Cramer and a little over 9 hours I didn’t want it to end.
Thanks Robert Bryndza for writing this and thanks again NetGalley.

I really enjoyed listening to this on audio as it gave the characters a bit more personality and when I read the second half on audio book I found myself relating and visualising the characters better which meant that I got into the book more.

If you pick up just one thriller this year make it this one!

Devil's Way (Detective Kate Marshall) by Robert Bryndza
Book and Audiobook Review
Narrated by Jan Cramer - Audiobook 9 hours, 2 minutes
Rating: 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Robert Bryndza has written an amazing and stunning thriller. It's a terrific choice whether you enjoy reading books or listening to audiobooks. My attention was captured from the first chapter until the very end. This story is full of action, and I enjoyed every minute of the plot.

Synopsis:
During a hospital stay, Detective Kate Marshall meets Jean, an older woman on the same ward. Jean tells Kate that on a camping trip on Dartmoor eleven years ago, Jean's three-year-old grandson Charlie disappeared.

When Kate is released from the hospital she agrees to look into Charlie's case. Was Charlie kidnapped? Could he have drowned in Devil's Way, the nearby rushing river that flows into a gorge near where they camped?

Devil's Way book and audiobook will be available on January 12th.

Thank you NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for sharing this exciting book and audiobook with me. This book is very well written and Jan Cramer's narration is excellent. Congratulations Robert Bryndza!

This one was awesome despite me not ever liking books about missing children. Great plot and believable characters. I absolutely loved the character of Kate and of her sidekick Tristan and the intricate relationship that they have.

This is a series which just gets better and better. This time Kate and Tristan take on the case of a child that went missing 11 years ago. on Dartmoor.

The story hooked me in right from the start, with Kate almost drowning while swimming in the sea, and continued at a nice even pace through to the satisfying climax.. I found the bleak Dartmoor setting quite haunting and a little scary, especially as there was just a hint of the supernatural.. There were enough twists tfor me to try (and fail) to puzzle out. I love the way that the author continues to flesh out the characters of the two main characters, who are both engaging., and it's nice to have to Private Investigators as main characters rather than police officers.

As always Jan Cramer does a terrific job narrating this excellent book.

An excellent read!
I’m ashamed to say this is the first of the Kate Marshall series , but it won’t be my last!
I listened to the audio version and the story was paced just right , it kept me interest and I became invested in the story.
The main character Kate is a great lead she has vulnerabilities which come to the surface at times but she is also a strong female protagonist.
Tristan is Kate’s partner in the private detective agency and together they make a formidable team.
The narrator was excellent and help bring the characters to life .
An entertaining and absorbing read , highly recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing.

Devil's Way is Book 4 in the Kate Marshall series from Robert Bryndza.

"Kate and her business partner, Tristan, take on the case of a three-year-old boy that went missing on a camping trip eleven years ago. They discover a dark past to his grandmother. Did that make him a target? A social worker that was concerned about him was found murdered a couple of weeks after he went missing. A couple on a nearby farm had suspicious behavior. Is the boy still alive or did he fall in the river?"

This is a police procedural from Bryndza. Kate and Tristan follow the clues and leads. There are several red herrings - one big one convinced me early that Bryndza was going a certain way. But he pivots in a different direction into a wild ending. Readers will have a hard time putting this down with all of the twists and turns.

Jan Kramer does a nice job with the audio performance.

This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. Crime fiction fans will enjoy this one. another great story from Bryndza.

Devil’s Way
Kate Marshall #4
Robert Bryndza
Every morning Kate Marshall, Private Detective took a swim in the sea. One morning a riptide pulled her under, she fought to stay alive. Two surfers came to her rescue. Kate Marshall came very close to drowning. She woke up in a hospital bed with pneumonia. Jean, an elderly patient, occupied the other bed in the hospital room. The two women became friends and Jean shared the story of her missing grandson, Charlie. The young boy disappeared eleven years ago while on a camping trip. Jean wanted closure and asked Kate to look for her grandson; she needed to know what happened to him. Kate and her partner Tristan began the search for Charlie; they quickly discovered Jean’s past which was colorful to say the least. The case left many questions? What happened to little Charlie, was he kidnapped, or could he have fallen into the bog or the gorge; there were many places in the surrounding area that was very dangerous especially for a small child. The investigation took the Kate and Tristan to the police officers that were on the scene eleven years ago when Charlie disappeared. They discovered a murdered social worker that could or could not have something to do with the missing child. Rather than answers the investigation seemed to bring more questions. The investigation took the Private Investigators from talking with the police officers on the scene when Charlie disappeared to the campground.
This is the first book I have read by author Robert Bryndza, it won’t be the last. The plot was like an onion with layer upon layer that you slowly peeled away. Main characters Kate and Tristan have great depth. Kate is a recovering alcoholic, sober for 13 years. Kate was my favorite character, she is flawed. She is struggling with her near-death experience, the physical, mental and emotional toll it is taking on her. Tristan stands by her even when she loses her temper with him. The descriptions of Dartmoor are stunning and set the atmosphere. Great writing, great plot, great characters, what more can you ask for?

“Devil’s Way” is a gripping cold case thriller with a very clever twist! I am excited to discover this author—I have not previously read any of his books and didn’t realize that this was part of a series—and look forward to reading more, especially the three Kate Marshall books that precede this one. Kate and her associate Tristan are PIs with personality and I loved their approach to solving the mystery of a child who had disappeared eleven years earlier. The audiobook was beautifully narrated and I found myself wanting to keep listening even after I should have turned my attention to other things. The characters and setting are compelling, and I was thoroughly engaged. Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this audiobook.

So excited Kate Marshall is back!
Kate ex police and now private investigator along with her side kick Tristan are investigating missing child.
Great story, kept me guessing and loved the way the ending wasn't completely perfect.
This could easily be read as a standalone.
