Remember those picture science books you read as a kid that had all these fun facts in them? Well this is like that but for the state of Texas! As a lifelong Texan when I saw this I had to pick it up. It is such a cute book. The illustrations are adorable and there are so many fun facts! This is definitely not a book for the little littles unless a parent is there reading and point out all the things. But I would definitely buy it for a friend with kids.
LOVE THIS BOOK! It’s a perfect book for all ages. It is very informative and as a native Texas that has been here all my life and have traveled all over the state, it’s accurate. I can think of a multitude of reasons to gift this book to others where they will find it a great gift and learn from it.
The artwork is fantastic, loved seeing the bluebonnets.
If I was asked to state something about the book I didn’t like or felt could improve the book, it would just be the font sizes. Some of the pages feel blank but there is tons of information on them. In attempts to keep it all separate, Maybe change it to have varying sized fonts where one fact takes the focus then you make your way around to them all.
Great job, Heather Alexander for this wonderful book.
This super informative book is sure to make you want to visit some of the places found within it! As someone from Texas it was really cool to get to take this little trip to all the places I'm familiar with and to learn new facts!
Everything you want to know about Texas is in this book. From cities and towns to stats, to food, sports, festivals and attractions. This is a great reference book for a Texas report. The illustrations are very cheerful and colorful. They are appealing to the eyes.
Review to come early February to my blog/goodreads.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I absolutely liked the author's Only In America and Only in California books, so of course I had to tap that Read Now button as fast as I could when I saw this new books by her! This time it is Texas! Eep! I hope that this author is planning on a book for each state, I would absolutely love that! After all, I am never ever planning on visiting the US. I would love to because what I read from books or see on shows/documentaries there are many places I would love to visit. Sadly, for reasons I am not planning to visit.
In this book we are travelling through Texas! We are starting at, how can we else, at Austin! The end point? Piney Woods! I was definitely curious about many of the things listed on the map and eager to get to those places~ Each place gets a two-page spread illustration along with many facts dotted here and there about the place. Austin seems like a great place, I mean food trucks? Sign me up. Haha, yes, I am a bit food driven. XD I loved travelling through Texas and visiting all these places, man, I wished I could visit them in real life! Houston! Iron Shark Roller Coaster (which my hubby will love more than me, but haha)! I need to see those New Braunfels Unicorns (what a team name). The Mexican market in San Antonio! New Braunfels' Schlitterbahn Waterpark! Holding baby gators? OMG!! Nope to tarantulas though, especially if they are the largest, nope~ See marching bands play at matches! A festival for books/reading!!!! *dances* Oh my goodness, there is so much more and I wanted to visit it all. Ah, maybe in a better time (and safer).
In between visiting the places mentioned on the map we also get some extra pages with extra information about the state. Facts like where Texas got its name from to the fact that Loving County (what a name) is the US county with the fewest people to a time line on the state including a T-rex and cows. I really loved that we got these extra facts. Just like in the book about California. You think you are just getting the deets from the map, but oh no, surprise! There is more! It gave the book more filling!
I learned a lot of new facts about Texas. A WHOLE LOT. There was many I didn't know and I am delighted to learn so much.
The art was once again fabulous! The style is really fun, colourful, and I love the style~
All in all, I would LOVE more books about states! I definitely got a couple of states I am very curious about (Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Nevada, Florida, Indiana). So crossing fingers that the author gives us more books about states! I would highly recommend these fun books to all!
I ADORED this book. I spent 7 years living in Fort Worth, TX and I miss it every single day. That was a lifetime ago, and my two small kids (4 and 6) have never visited my old stomping grounds. I was so excited to find this book, and to give them a little insight into the mythical world of Texas.
The illustrations are beautiful. The bluebonnets on the inside cover made me feel warm and fuzzy. I love that it’s divided up by city because a lot of my fondest memories are tied to geographical locations - music festivals, natural landmarks, cultural events, historic landmarks, etc. Each section includes perfectly packaged little tidbits that are descriptive enough to be educational, but simple enough for even my four year old to digest. I’m 39, and I learned a ton of new facts! (Who knew where “Keep Austin weird” originated? Not me!) I loved the nods to the Fort Worth Zoo, Whataburger, the Iron Skillet, and kolaches. My only complaint is the spread on Fort Worth itself. No TCU? No Billy Bob’s? Yet there’s a factoid about horses having large eyes.
I really enjoyed this book, probably more than my children did. I’ll be purchasing a copy to keep in our home library for when I’m feeling a little nostalgic.
This title will be enjoyed by children who are interested in geography. I hope and think that it will be part of a series on all fifty of the United States.
This book is packed with information about various Texas cities, history, flora & fauna, museums, festivals and much more. The text is accompanied by many illustrations, photos and more.
I love how the author invites young readers in by asking them to hop into his pickup truck and begin their tour/journey. Kids are told they will do things like eat, paddle down rivers, go to rodeos and have lots of other adventures.
This book offers a superb way to interest kids in geography. It deserves a spot in home and school libraries.
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for this title. All opinions are my own.
What a fun book! Beautiful & informative. I absolutely loved all of the colorful illustrations. Each page is packed full of Texas facts and pictures. Bluebonnets, brisket, Big Bend, and everything in between. The state's larger cities are each highlighted with landscapes, tourist hot spots, and hidden gems. A history timeline, sports, wildlife + nature, foods, and festivals are all included.
As a native Californian, but Texas transplant the one thing I wish the author would've included is a how to guide on pronouncing the pesky names of some of Texas's uniquely named towns. The pictures are great for younger kids but the amount of info packed into this book make it perfect for upper elementary or middle school students. Especially those looking to do a school project over this great state! Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group- Wide Eyes Editions via NetGalley for an ARC for reviewing purposes.
5 stars.
