I’m from Garden Grove, loved to visit Catalina (still do), and enjoyed this book for the accuracy of the innocence of a first love. Doug is a really good story-teller, and I read this book in one sitting. Thank you for taking me back into your world of “becoming”, if only for a few hours.

I thoroughly enjoyed the innocence, resilience and resourcefulness displayed by main character “Dougie Doug” in Catalina Castaway. What made me devour this novel though, was the author’s hilarious recounting of awkward, sometimes difficult experiences of growing up. One Life Savers candy story near the beginning made me laugh out loud. I highly recommend this refreshing read!

I was given this book as a gift, and didn't know if it would engage me or not. It started off great, bogged down a little for me, and then wow, it took off and really grabbed a hold of me. I couldn't put it down! A great read! It's about a shy, insecure 16 year-old high schooler who rises through some difficult circumstances to become a hero, with a beautiful girlfriend, and a lot of confidence. It takes place in Orange County, where I grew up, and Catalina Island, which I was also familiar with, which made it even more engaging for me as a reader. I highly recommend it! "

Doug is a great storyteller and this is a great book about teenagers in Catalina. You feel like you are growing up in Catalina. You remember your teenage days, first love and the innocence of it.
In his final year of high school, Dougie needs to find a job and get his driver's license if he is going to go on a date with Kimberly. His father buys a hotel on Catalina Island and Doug is hired as a bellhop miles from home. He is reluctantnt to his Island life, but eventually surrenders to it deciding to stay, only for his brother Cal to be on his way to replace him.
