This is an eye-catching book, outside and in. (I started reading on my kindle, then realised you really need to see the book in colour.) Teaching means you meet many children with anxiety problems, issues of low self-esteem and their dread of dealing with social interactions. This book gives them a chance to think about and start to identify their own specific problems, and think through some positive solutions. I think it would be best used by a teen working along side an adult (parent, teacher, guidance teacher, SFL teacher) because there is a lot of text. In a guidance setting it would work for whole class lessons on the topics covered because in all honesty all teenagers could use the ideas presented here. And in actual fact, a lot of adults too! Thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
A quick read for anyone with teenagers forced to navigate the pandemic. While written for them, the tools are useful discussion points. While the tools are not new, the layout and the everyday prose makes this a book that will catch the attention of adolescent readers. Bravo for writing this.
Thank you NetGalley for aARC.
As an adult who was first diagnosed with anxiety in my teens, I was interested to see what a workbook would look like. I was a little worried when the first few pages were text heavy because I thought the workbook might feel too much like homework. Which, to be fair, this is a workbook, so that is kind of the point, right? No teen would be opening this book unless they intended to put in the effort. I was actually really happily surprised when I made it through the introduction because each section is broken up by tasks for the reader to do.
I really liked that the tasks walk the reader through doing things like understanding primary and secondary emotions, as well as having the reader inventory positive reactions to certain emotions.
Personally, I think this is a great workbook, though I do feel most teens will need some sort of adult supervision or encouragement to complete all of the tasks.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this workbook in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to read this because as a youth mental health therapist, I am always looking for new resources. I will 100% recommend this workbook to parents of my clients! I so appreciated in the forard that the author outlines why it’s so hard to relate to teens these days and how the world is just, well, different! There’s some really useful tools outlined throughout the book and I think it’s presented in a way that would be easy for teens to navigate. Bravo!
As a psychotherapist and also a parent of a teenager I found this book extremely interesting. Definitely a resource that will be of use to parents of children who are experiencing anxiety. All to often we parents can be left feeling helpless when our child is experiencing difficulties with their mental health; this book offers strategies and information that will be of use to parents.
Definitely a useful resource for parents.
This is an amazing resource for any teen struggling with social anxiety. At this time, it is so beneficial to our students as we witness them struggling with anxiety every day. Highly recommend to anyone who loves, supports, teaches, etc. a teen battling social anxiety. I wish there were resources like this available to me as a teenager, I feel that I could have truly benefitted from it myself.
Thank you to Netgalley, Jason Forte, and the publisher for the opportunity to read the ARC version of this book.
I appreciate the chance for the ARC from Netgalley and the publisher. This book is an excellent resource for today's teenagers.
This book is based on the ideas of CBT and how our thoughts impact on our behaviour. It encourages the reader to build on their inner strengths and be positive and proud like we are as young children. There is no direct instruction, just gentle guidance to help create a more positive outlook and self belief. Great for anybody to read and help with life’s tricky situations.
