I love books like this. You can get lots of facts but they are in concise fashion. Children will love looking through this book and looking at the pictures with the facts that accompany it. There are strange facts and sports; museums, festivals. You can learn about Niagara Falls all the way south to New York City. Theres a historical timeline for the state from 1142 to the current year. It shares the different flowers and trees you can find throughout the state. And the food. Starting with pizza and going all the way to cheesecake. If you are planning a trip to New York this would be a great book for kids to read up on things they might like to do on their trip.
This book was cool!! This is my first one of these and I see several other states have been published, I think these are a great idea though and would make a fabulous coffee table style book. I’m not certain what children’s age these are meant for, but I don’t know that either my niece and nephew (age 3 and 6 respectfully) would be interested in it, so perhaps older children(?!). I found it really interesting as an adult though!
The facts are fascinating, and draw you in, and the illustrations/pictures are a good balance of just enough!
Thank you NetGalley and Heather Alexandra for the arc to read and review - all thoughts and opinions are mine.
What a delightful trip across the state of New York!! This illustrated book mainly aimed at children is a very fun, entertaining and educational read for people of all ages, and anyone wishing to indulge in a rich and varied trip while staying in the comfort of their home. The book covers a wide range of topics (nature, wildlife, food, history, culture, etc.) with well-written texts and lovely drawings.
Entertaining and fun. This book focuses on the state of New York and not only NYC. It includes illustrations along with factoids, historical timelines, differing areas of the state, animals, foods, festivals, sports and much more. I was unaware of this series which and believe it would be a great addition to a library or classroom. Easily readable by third grade and up. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group, Wide Eyed Editions for a temporary ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving a voluntary review. (4.5 Stars)
If you like wacky but not tacky animated adventures, this book is for you! It’s wonderfully illustrated and navigates your imaginary trip through New York State full of fun facts. That being said, it avoids answering the age old question of where does upstate New York begin by simply stating it as a head scratcher and moving on. Well played book, well played.
This is a delightfully illustrated children’s book, filled with fascinating facts about the state of New York. There are so many colorful, beautiful illustrations that will keep a child’s eyes busy, and so much interesting information to read. I realized how little I had known about New York after reading this book. Didn’t know the rose was the state flower, or that the lady bug is the state insect! Little factoids like that are fun, but there is so much more to discover. Many people probably forget that New York is more than NYC and this book describes other major cities and areas, as well as the fantastic nature in the state. Sports, food, weird facts, museums, famous people, and much more. I also particularly appreciated the focus on diversity and equality: people of color and women are not forgotten. Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing!
Lovely book, with clear and interesting info, and beautifully illustrated
I can easily see the full set of these living on a bookshelf, particularly a school library
I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley, on the expectation that I would provide an honest review.
A wonderful book about exploring New York - targeting young readers!
In this book, we will look into amazing landscapes, histories, sites, and even food! Only in New York provides various little facts , and is filled with colorful illustrations, which attract readers to explore more fun information.
This book can make a wonderful souvenir for young readers, or even a guidebook for children who have a passion for travel . A wonderful resource to add to the school library.
Review to come early September (close to the release day) on my blog: I received this book from Netgalley/publisher in exchange of an honest review.
After the fab books of Only in America (3.5 stars), Only in California (4.5 stars), and Only in Texas (4.5 stars), I just HAD to get this book when I saw it on Netgalley! I love that more books are written, hopefully I am able to read all the books as there are still plenty of states left!
After all, I am not able to visit the US ever, or well, I should say I would love to visit but given how the country is towards LGBT, how much violence/gun stuff, and other things there are? I will just stick to books if I want to travel the US. Haha. So these books are a treasure!
In this book we travel along the state of New York. Going from Niagara Falls to Thousand Islands to NY City and ending at Long Island! I was very eager to get this journey started, I hadn't realised that Niagara Falls is in the state of New York, plus I was very curious about The Finger Lakes (the what now?). Can you imagine, the first few pages and I am already learning new things! Love it! Let's get this journey started~ I loved that for the city of New York we first got an overview and then some postcards featuring some parts of it, like Staten Island. Fun! And from that moment we travel all across the state seeing some gorgeous scenes and some wonderful moments and I wish I could just step in the book and be part of it. I loved how each new part is a two-page spread filled with all sorts of fun mini-facts about it.
I loved that, just like the others, next to facts about certain places/parts we also get special pages featuring things like sports, museums, or food! I always keep looking forward to those as they have some really fun facts! Many I don't know!
Facts I learned: The Capital of NY is not NY but Albany. That when a Mets player hits a home run a sculpture of an apple pops up. And I would love to see The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, 7000 pumpkins! Glowing! Need! And hello a book village in Hobart? Sign me up! Plus, all that food. I just ate lunch 2 hours ago but there goes my stomach, rumbling for a slice, or maybe some chicken french? Or maybe tomato pie? Or no no, hotdogs? Haha, so many choices! YUM!
And of course, like the previous books this book is beautifully illustrated with illustrations everywhere. From big two-page spreads to smaller illustrations on other pages. Fun!
All in all, I loved this book and I had oh so much fun reading it! I cannot wait to see what is next in the series. Recommended to all!
I was so Excited to Read This Book. It tells about all about the State of New York. I spent most of my life in New York and miss being there.
💗🗽🎇💙
This is a Great Book for Any Age. It’s Really Fun, learn so many Facts I never knew. Looking at NYC, Long Island, and Hudson Valley since this is where I grew up or have relatives in the area and have been to these places. However, learn so much info that I never was aware of. Just told my cousin, who grew up in Poughkeepsie and now lives in Queens, that the inventor of SCRABBLE was from Poughkeepsie and made the SCRABBLE Game in Queens on 35th Avenue and made a Sign like the Game.
The Wonderful Festivals were covered in New York City. A couple were new to Me. The Macy’s Day Parade, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, National Puerto Rican Day Parade I have been to and suggest going if you ever can.
I did not know about The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. It is a Costume Parade and the largest in the World. 🐾 I also have seen the 2 Lions that guard The New York Public Library, but did not know their names are Patience and Fortitude. I had never heard about Seneca Village, this was a pre-civil war community of black property owners that were displaced when the town was torn down to add space for Central Park. There were so many fascinating facts, that I think most people and kids will really enjoy learning.
There was a Supreme Court Decision in 1985 saying Long Island is actually a Peninsula since the East River separating Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens is too shallow for most ships to pass through. I had never heard about that. Inhaling Salty Water, I do miss as was very close to the Atlantic Ocean when I lived in Islip and close to the along Island Sound when I grew up in Smithtown. It is beautiful and we need to be careful to preserve these areas.
This book covered the entire State of NY well and I found out new tidbits I had never known. There are many more beautiful areas to see and visit. I suggest if you can visit, you will enjoy many destinations.
I loved this book. It would be great if each State in the US had one like it. Great to learn new things, history, and culture of a State.
Thank you NetGalley, Heather Armstrong, and Quarto Publishing for providing a copy of this book. I always leave reviews for all the books I read.
Wow what an awesome book for kids! This non fiction book is jam packed with information and beautiful, colorful images all about the state of New York. From city to country and state wide facts this book has something for everyone. There's tons of information but all presented in bite sized chunks so it's manageable for children to explore. This would make a great gift for a child who lives in New York or who is moving or traveling there!
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing group for a sneak peek of this title!
This is a really great find on New York State. It goes beyond the typical facts you can find somewhere and adds all sorts of colorful items that are related to the state and its history. This is a really fun book for kids of all ages; as well as adults who like trivia and just interesting facts. I thought the presentation and catagorization was spot on. The illustrations were whimsical and I liked the choice of a pastel, water color like palet for this. They were complimentary without overwhelming the text, which was easy to read and well laid out. I am a native NYer and I learned things about the state that I didn't know and was reminded of things that I did know. I picked up this title on a whim but I'm glad that I did. I would definitely recommend this to my students for writing a paper about New York or even to my creative writing students who want to add some colorful facts or some insight into their work if they have a setting in New York state. I'm also really glad that they included not just NYC, but the entire state, many forget New York is more than just NYC. Nice work!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This book was filled with fun facts and interesting tidbits along with great drawings.
Thank you NetGalley and Wide Eyed Editions for this eCopy to review
We loved this book about New York State. I had no idea how big the state is, it is far more than just New York City. Alexander gives lots of fun facts about all aspects of New York from food, sport, culture to history and nature. The illustrations are fantastic and really bring the text to life. I have always wanted to visit New York (the city), but now I want to tour the whole state!
We will definitely be reading the other books in the series and hope they cover other countries in the future
Such a great overview of all the things to see and do in New York -- the entire state, not just the city! Also included are famous people and inventions that are associated with NY. The quirky illustrations are fantastic and the text is presented as captions to the pictures -- great for kids with short attention spans and those who are visual learners.
7-year-old me would have loved this book! It's full of interesting facts about the state of New York (some of which are obscure enough to also be new to adult readers). The artwork is engaging. Aspiring young travelers, and also those who've already been to some of the places mentioned, will love digging into the extra details provided in this book.
This kids’ book is part of an excellent series on all fifty states. This time, readers learn a lot about New York. So much is packed into this short book. There are many locations to visit, as for example, New York City, Long Island, the Catskills and more. There are also museums, foods, animals, festivals and even a section entitled Weird, Weirder and Weirdest.
This book will make many want to come for a visit. Adults and kids can use this title to plan their visit to the Empire State. It is well illustrated and packed with facts and ideas.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group. All opinions are my own.
